If I didn't know any better, I might have thought it had a Kraft presentation (46% and no cold filtration). Yes, it's not a very advanced bottling process, but it successfully does its job.

Price-performance ratio: Good, Medium-good.
Would I buy it again?: Trying it was enough, but at these prices it could be recommended as an entry-level item, especially for those with a predisposition to this particular personality type.
  • Nose

A young nose. A synthetic lemon scent, like glass cleaner. Green apple. Lots of almonds; almond powder and lightly roasted almonds, even almond cookies. Playdough. A hint of lime zest. Lots of doughiness. A green scent like those unfiltered, thick olive oils. Synthetic vanilla and powdered sugar; vanilla sugar (?). Quince dessert. A little orange. Not bad, but too much doughiness.
  • Taste
    82 82
A decent body on the palate, slightly below medium. A high, if not medium-high, sweetness. Key lime pie. Lime and lemon zest with synthetic vanilla and maybe a little custard. The doughy side continues but a little more cooked; malt, loaf breadcrumbs. A little grey pepper and maybe a very small amount of salt. Coconut mochi. Very light almond cookie.
  • Finish
    79 79
Green pear and peeled apple. Aside from the apple scent, a distinctly youthful green apple. Medium intensity, medium-short finish. The olive note reappears. A bit rubbery, chewy. Plenty of almond, gas station marzipan, and almond cookie notes again. Retronasal, a very slight soapiness and yeast. Not the most enjoyable part, but no major flaws either.

Very pleasant on the nose with a clear influence from bourbon barrels. I detect intense oak notes, a gentle sweetness, hints of vanilla and light fruit, as well as touches of powdered sugar and a light spiciness. The age is clearly noticeable on the nose.

On the palate, this impression is even stronger. The oak influences are pronounced and intense. I discover a wealth of interesting notes, including clay soil, wet stone, mineral tones, maritime hints, and plenty of old wood. I feel transported to a cool, damp warehouse. I can practically see the barrels before me. The fruit notes are quite subtle on the palate; I detect hints of orchard fruit. The finish is smooth but could be longer.

Overall, an outstanding whisky. I've never had a 17-year-old bottling that tasted so old. On the palate, I would estimate this whisky to be at least 20 years old. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. If you're lucky enough to still get your hands on a bottle, you should!

The Pulteney character is undeniably there, while the Manzanilla and Oloroso influence is additive but restrained.
  • Nose
Sweet notes of crème brûlée, jammy apricots and stewed pears alongside roasted almonds, damp earth and a savoury salinity. Then honey drizzle accompanied by subtle tobacco notes.
  • Taste
Building upon that sweetness but with a thoughtful austerity. Hints of white pepper, cooling mint, dark tobacco notes and most definitely a distinct brininess. Then warming cinnamon with chocolate and zesty orange.
  • Finish
Medium length with warming spices, a slightly drying quality and charred oak with a mild bitter grassiness.

Great overall impression - a large bottle for €45, which will serve as a "daily" drink for beginners.
  • Nose
    84 84
Lots of light fruit, citrus orange, a little pineapple
  • Taste
    86 86
Light, creamy, oily, again fruity, orange and pineapple, tangy with salty notes
  • Finish
    85 85
Salt takes center stage in the finish, paired with a pleasant, light tingling sensation. No "new" flavors emerge; it remains rather simple, which is perfectly acceptable given the price.

Malty, caramel-like, slightly salty. Much too thin.

The berries, slightly sulfurous, and herbal flavors need to steep for at least half an hour before the flavors become smooth, but overall they still lack some highlights.

Extremely drinkable: Beautifully smooth, coastal, chocolatey with a hint of orange juice. A real bargain, especially if you also like sherry-style ale!

Very dark indeed, but also very mature? It really is hard to tell under this heavy sherry overcoat. All things considered, this gets the same score from me as the lighter-colored version of the 16-year-old (WB128124) – even though it's certainly different in character. It's an enjoyable sherry bomb with vestiges of distillery character, but I wouldn't want a whole of bottle of this; a sample suffices.
  • Nose
    85 85
Loads of sherry, but also finer, more fragrant noes like lemongrass and citrus / orange zest. Gets rather creamy and sweet (marzipan, fudge) with enough time in the glass: the American oak certainly dominates on the nose.
  • Taste
    86 86
A bit simple, but thoroughly satisfying. The sherry is strong, but it doesn't flatten out the experience: the flavor development has distinct, individually identifiable stages: a sweet, syrupy-mild arrival, a spicy-mineral midsection, and a juicy, more citrus-based dénouement. Obviously a lot of chocolate and coffee flavors throughout the whole thing. No off notes: no rubber, no sulphur, no excessive winey sweetness.
  • Finish
    84 84
Well done, but not stellar. In comparison with a Glenallachie 10-y.o. CS, it's noticeably weaker, less assured, and shorter.

Nose: delicate, silky, fine sherry, marmalade jam (with water)
Palate: a mix of fine and Haribo candies, spices, with clove standing out.
Finish: long, sweet and salty, spices

Conclusion: A very good whisky; the presence of the distillate is clearly felt, while the wood does not stand out at all.

1224-OLD PELTENEY 12 yo SINGLE MALT SCOTCH Whisky 40%
...I have a problem, because it's not bad, and it's not good at all. For one of my "first" whiskies, it's actually OK. If you've already tried beginner's distillates, this one won't surprise you. If it were a slightly higher-proof version, it would gain some points, but as it is... it's a decent, unremarkable whisky in a relatively nice bottle. It's a bit boring in the glass. A one-time bottle... I mean, not one to drink in one sitting. Once purchased, you won't want to try it again. I highly recommend it to beginners.
  • Nose
...for a 12-year-old, the first impression is that the liquid needs some time to air out... and then... And then we have those bourbon barrels. The scent is "clean," fresh, untainted. Citrusy, I'd lean toward lime and lemon zest. I'll set it aside for a moment to see what's in the empty one—there's a delicate saltiness of the sea breeze while walking along the beach in the light of the setting sun... I got carried away. Something about wet chalk, lime, mineral sand. It's quite accessible. I'm going back to the full-bodied—there's still a light sweetness, broken by a marine note. Delicately soapy (scents of creamy soap with a floral edge). So far, it's all so decent that it's a bit boring... or maybe it has to be that way?
  • Taste
...sweet, light, a bit sugary with pepper, even a bit watery. Almond,

Burnt like burnt caramel. A touch of bitterness and a pinch of salt at the end. …I thought that was the end, but no, because at the end of that "end" there's a herbal note. We have a hint of vanilla, burnt cake, or toast (or maybe...toast?). The sweetness fades quickly, and a tannin lingers on the tongue, like that of bitter, cold tea. The next sip begins with a light spiciness, a gingery pinch, a drop of lemon, the bitterness of white albedo, a drop of grapefruit juice. The saltiness is present but not overpowering, adding a slight piquancy, like a pinch of salt in tea. I'm in a dilemma again: it's not bad, but is it good?
  • Finish
...rather medium, sweetish at first, then slightly salty, barrel-aged. Even the fruit has given up and no longer emerges. Citrus flavor with almond bitterness and a slight herbal note.
