The Old Pulteney 12 Years is serious whisky. It's coastal, fruity and well-balanced with enough depth to warrant buying an entire bottle. No frills, just good single malt from Wick.
    • Nose
It's lemon-y fresh with a hint of vanilla, elder flowers and tinned pineapples. Even some ripe galia melon. But there's also chalk and seashells. Just properly good stuff.
    • Taste
The 40% scares me a little bit, but it's relatively creamy and certainly holds up high the Pulteney profile. There's some chalk, a nice salinity and touches of bitter lemon zest and green grapes. Some white pepper to finish things off.
    • Finish
Medium in length with a good pinch of salt.

  2. Koning scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

A very enjoyable dram. A bit underrated, real value for money considering the friendly price.
    • Nose
      83 83
A malty sweet nose, with caramel fudge and lemon candy. The sweetness is countered by a mint-like freshness with some coastal air.
    • Taste
      84 84
Rather malty and sweet. Citrus fruits combine well with a slight saltiness. Some cacao and dill linger on the background.
    • Finish
      85 85
Fresh herbs and spices in the finish, including aniseed. Some sweets and caramel. The brininess of the palate retruns, this indeed is a maritime malt.

A decent whisky for the discounted supermarket prices you find it for here in the UK. Value (£24) : 8/10
    • Nose
Light citrus fruits, lemons and limes with some honey sweetness.Perhaps a touch of peat but no more than that.
    • Taste
Caramel sweetness and some ginger spice. Slight salinity brings it together nicely before some peppery heat and oak spice kick in
    • Finish
A short finish with more vanillas and pepper kick. Lacking here.

    Old Pulteney 12YO

    Category: Single Malt
Producer and bottler: Old Pulteney Distillery (Inver House Distillers)
    Region: Highlands
    Fortress: 40%
    Volume: 700 ml
    Bottling date: 03/11/2021
    Barrel type: ex-Bourbon
    Min. age: 12 years old
    Filtration: done
    Dye: yes

Nose. Subtle, delicate, fresh, medium intensity sea breeze aroma with hints of flower honey, salted butter, lemon-orange peel, fresh pineapples, bananas, apples and pears, cigarette ash, perfume, vanilla and ginger.

Taste. Very light, slightly watery, but well-balanced taste with a silky creamy texture, in which there was a place for honey-fruity sweetness, citrus sourness, salty sea and sulphurous character, and a slight drying ginger-pepper, hoppy bitterness.

Aftertaste. Dry. A short. Ginger, hops, sulfur, salt.

Conclusion. The sea wave washed a plate left by someone on the northern island with cuts of various tropical fruits. An interesting combination. An interesting, memorable, complex malt with its own style, but all the wonderful flavor and aroma indicators, unfortunately, for the sake of commercial gain, are at a rudimentary, superficial level and are not fully disclosed.

    Rating: 82 out of 100.

Dark-skinned color. Whisky in a glass seems to be rare in its structure.
    • Nose
      79 79
Slightly sweet. Flowers. Honey. Vanilla cream. A hint of citrus underneath. Minimal minerality, a little salt. Some white fruit. Perfumed sensation. A pinch of spices with a deep breath. More vanilla and caramel appeared on the other nose.
    • Taste
      77 77

A nice entry-level whisky. It has those nice salty, maritime notes that you would expect from an Old Pulteney. Not a complicated single malt, but a subtle and tasty dram. For around €30, this is good value for money too.
    • Nose
Vanilla and oranges. Minerals and a bit briny too. Then I get lemons, but also a hint of coconut. Nougat. Almonds in the back and caramel. Later also peach.
    • Taste
A creamy mouthfeel with whipped cream and vanilla. Slightly watery though, but less than I expected. A bit of caramel fudge. Lemons and also oranges. Followed by minerals and a touch of chalk. A pinch of sea salt and almonds again.
    • Finish
Short to mid-long with salt, caramel and lemons.

Ethanol upon poured! Leaving it in the glass brought out the beauty. soft floral scents, ripen peach, bubbles from the water dissolving soap. Lightly acidic citrus, soft spices, pear drop, vanilla, lard. All in a harmony, but all they are just weak.

I didn't pay much for a bottle and one should bear in mind that. The scores are as they are but it was good value. I have certainly tried more interesting Pultney's but I was curious to see if that creamy character was present in the entry-level: it is, but only just.
    • Nose
      79 79
yes a bit creamy veering towards some butterscotch but it is not a glorious nose, just a decently welcoming one

Pulteney 12 was a game-changer for me in the early part of the malt journey.

VERY zesty citrus fruits, green apples, hint of smoke, ocean, and vanilla create an almost pineapple-like aroma combination that takes me to the sunny shores of Hawaii. All of this continues lightly in the pallet with an oaky note. The aftertaste is dry salty, slightly smoky, and VERY bitter, making it very much a maritime malt.

A great appealing scent is inviting but the bitterness of the finish is challenging for sure. Interesting combination. 80 points.

The flavor of the bourbon cask is not matured enough.

This cost me £24 with free postage, bargain.

Vanilla by the bucket load on the nose mixed with resin & polish, this is mixed with custard, mango and some green apple.
Initial mouthfeel is decent but unexciting at first, very one dimensional.
So a simple profile but some nice spice and sugared fruity sweetness on show with a little peat.
The finish is really mellow, not too much effect but it lingers for a while.
Lets cut to the chase, this is a straight shooter in as much it will not set your world alight but it would be a great session malt.
Compared to older OP 12 this is tame, I remember older versions from say 5 years ago had much more fire in them.
A good entry level malt, not bad.

My first experience with Old Pulteney, nice whisky. I expected her to be somewhat simpler, lighter, with no great expression. I was pleasantly surprised by the density and sweet tones. For easy drinking, why not?
    • Nose
At first malt and chocolate, after a while retreats and it all goes more to light "sea" salinity.
    • Taste
Medium-bodied, creamy-round. Interestingly. Malt, buttery tones, fresh - lighter style. The finish is more of a salt.
    • Finish
Malt - alcoholic - (very lightly) salty.

For a "supermarket" find you can pick this up very cheaply but you get a lot, making it an undervalued dram. The nose in particular is very good and the overall profile at this price point is one of the best

N- Edgy solvent scents of nail polish remover, then coastal nuances emerged with caramalized pineapple, honey, crackling dry wood on log burner that comes with plenty of heat but also less smokes. Sweet herbs, spices and floral. (86/20)
