Still a bit hesitant on the nose, it makes a more self-confident impression as it progresses. The Oloroso leaves enough room for the distillery character, but the two don't always go hand in hand. Old Pulteney is the name of the Distillery Bottlings of the Pulteney Distillery in the port town of Wick in the north of Scotland Mainland. The 18-year-old was finished in Ex-Oloroso and has a rich golden color that is not too dark. This suggests a beautiful sherry with maritime notes.

In the WhiskyJason Old Pulteney Blind Tasting, he was only partially convincing and came in last place. In my ranking, it's still number 4. What's the problem?

    www.glen-efze.de
    • Nose
The aroma of the whisky is beautiful. There are dark, woody sherry notes, but there are also nice fruits. They are dark, thick, sweet fruits with a herbal note that adds a tart aspect to the aroma. That suits the north, there is already a tart sea note that blows across the Orkney Islands to the mainland on a summer evening. The aroma is convincing.
    • Taste
Then comes the slump in the taste, fruit and sherry notes are to be restrained, there is a lack of strength, the 46% vol. are not sufficient to powerfully distribute the flavors in the mouth. The wood is only partially convincing. For 18 years, the whisky is a bit tame.
    • Finish
The finish is also weak. Some chocolate and wood are there, the barrels aren't really bad - but after 18 years they should make more of an impression. There is wood on the palate, but it is also restrained...

For 18 years and a price of over €100, the whisky just isn't convincing enough. The start is not maritime and strong. This is a cutter that has been bobbing in the harbor for several years and no longer goes out into the Pentland Firth. Despite this, he still has flair and charm and retains memories of the power he could have.

The Pulteneys in the tasting were all usable or good whiskys. The 18 is also delicious - but it doesn't convince and in the end is much too expensive for the quality.

Fruity and sweet, dark fruits, toffee, no flaw sherry, pretty nice and better than what I expected.

  11. g00se scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Voluminous and beautifully oily. I can clearly taste the Coastle character of an OP. In addition, a few juice oranges from the barrel influence and overall very harmonious. Perfect drinking strength.

not quite as maritime as the younger brothers, but there is so much to discover and with every sip you get a new focus. Nice. I'm positively surprised.
    [91 - 87 = extremely tasty -> it's best to get a second bottle]
    • Nose
      88 88
dark fruits, pleasant spiciness. The maritime, salty air note is no longer quite as pronounced with the 18 as with the 15 or 16, but it is still noticeable.
The dark fruits of plums, raisins and dates are joined by rich apple notes, which bring a little sweetness but also a slight acidity.
For me it also has a smoky character (possibly imaginary or from the barrel char).
At the back I get an earthy note along with tuber vegetables, but over time it becomes more and more concise for me.
    • Taste
      89 89
relatively soft, creamy, oily. The dark fruity aroma sides are there, spiciness and spices linger on the palate.
For me, the earthy note with the vegetables is quite dominant again. The maritime aroma is also there, but a little more restrained than in the nose, a little salt/salt crystals are noticeable.
Second sip: now more sherry influence, creamy-viscous mouthfeel again, hint of marzipan and brown sugar with forest honey. I find the earthy note in the forest honey, but the "vegetables" are gone now.
It becomes drier, nuttier, a little dark chocolate - the Oloroso pre-assignment comes through well.
    • Finish
      86 86
Long-lasting with oak tannins, dark chocolate, nutty aromas tending toward hazelnuts.
The maritime character is no longer tangible for me here, or it is lost in the dark fruit aromas for me - but it is still very pleasant.

Good level of fruitiness, sweetness and some sherry wood, really balanced and drinkable - really not bad
    • Nose

Plenty of fruit up front, starting with sweet orange and orange peel. The fruit smell dominates with some baking spice coming through.
    • Taste

Dark mahogany color. Strong tea. The whisky in the glass is quite oily.
    • Nose
      84 84
A clear influence of Sherry Oloroso. Lots of dried fruit. Raisins. It's not that sweet. A pinch of spices. Delicate spice. It is warming in a way. There is a trace of minerality. Fresh fruit flashed past.
    • Taste
      85 85
Slightly sweet. Mild and smooth. The influence of sherry. Dried fruits. Some salt. Vanilla. A pinch of spices. Cinnamon. A trace of fresher fruit. Peaches.
    • Finish

Light sweetness. Dried fruits. Salt. Dessert chocolate with raisins and salt. Warms up slightly. A pinch of spices. Light ginger. Cocoa. Salt again. Long finish.

A smooth, coherent, mellow soothing moisturizer.
    • Nose
      83 83
Pear and tangerine, nice pencil shaving, and sponge cake, salted butter. A little soapy. After a while there came the oaky aroma, not too strong, just there, a little musky. Followed by a little mint and lime. In general it's very coherent and mellow.
    • Taste
      82 82
Sweet, round and oily, made me felt quite good. Smooth is the word. Honeyed tea, and a little yeasty.
    • Finish
      82 82
One thing I don't quite like is the plastic, soapy after-taste. Though it gave a long and gentle warm, and moist, feeling.

  20. Lukas_Kiene scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Exciting malt. After initially great euphoria, triggered by the beguiling aroma, a clear disappointment followed. Unfortunately, the taste and especially the finish couldn't keep up.

But after I gave him a second chance, he was finally able to convince. Not quite as hoped, but still got a solid rating.

The price is absolutely hefty and beyond all reason. That should also be noted.
    • Nose
      88 88
Hui! Juicy, dark, almost fermented fruit notes hit the nose immediately! Plums, dates and more. Some of the fruits also have a delicately tangy and fresh touch. Super balanced.

Then there are berries, red apples, some homemade lemonade and fruit compote.

A touch of tart chocolate underlines the whole thing. Just like a delicate fresh grain note that appears after a while.

      Extremely delicious aroma.
    • Taste
      87 87
Pleasantly spicy, the wood is more noticeable here.

The fruits become lighter, fresher and more tangy, the chocolate and the tart notes come more to the fore. Sweetish green apple and delicate tart citrus notes. In addition, there is a delicate dry herbal note and a hint of maritime freshness.
    • Finish
      86 86
A little too dry, tart, delicately woody. Here, too, the wood is clearly noticeable. What remains is a slightly bitter note of wood and perhaps a little cold, stale coffee. The chocolate appears again after a while. Pleasant nut notes also follow. Longer finish than initially assumed.

Not bad, but unfortunately a bit disappointing ...

  21. etwa77 scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

more polished, more refined (as in refined sugar) than the 17, with more clear sherry notes, the sweet and salty combination takes center stage, almost as if it was intended to be so.. less wood, less herbs, less wilderness both in the nose and taste.. less personality, maybe.

the 18 is clearly more accessible, probably more quaffable, too.. the HDR version of the 17.
    • Nose
      86 86
sherry, salt, caramel, lemon rind.. a whiff of solvent.. very little wood, some fruits (pineapple, apples).. alcohol is nicely integrated.. all nice, but a bit underwhelming and too polite
    • Taste
      88 88
the sweet and salty is so out there, it is almost uncanny.. not much else, though clearly pleasant in a guilty pleasure kind of way
    • Finish
      86 86
this is where it clearly falls short.. so, short-lasting, sweet, salty and a tad fiery, with a bit of yum that manages to barely save it in the end

Hmmm, a sample from a new friend.

I've always like Pulteney and this is an excellent age statment from the range. There's a framiliar costal note that I always recognize as Pulteney, no shortage fo that here.
    • Nose
      86 86
Brine, floral sweets, sand and sweets. Herbal sweets, malt and a touch of kerosene. There is a hint of rubber, sugar plums and stone fruits.
    • Taste
      88 88
Full, so full. Cool sand, touches of sweet rubber erasers and hints of peach custard. Muted with a twist of oaky caramel and more ocean breeze brine, some very background smoke, like a wood fire in the distance.
    • Finish
      84 84
Little lighter here. I wish there was a bit more, maybe more proof would carry a little longer. Sweet oak, cocoa and vanilla chewy caramels. More hints at that coastal nose, but faint warmth fades from the oak and brings more sharpness to round out the finish.

A good touch of sherry, with raisins, a leather belt, elastic, puffed rice, cereals, white chocolate. Iodine comes next, a gentle maritime breeze, salty, even spicy, a shade of caramel, vanilla butter, floral fragrances. The palate is very sweet at first, honeyed and gently fruity, plum, pear and mirabelle plum, but the spices rise quickly, pepper and cinnamon, chocolate, nutmeg. Lemon zest. Long finish with candied vanilla. Barley sugar, marshmallow.

How does the new 18 2018 compare with the 17 2018? I'm surprised nobody has done a side by side comparison as of yet. I know the 17 is being phased out, but still. Someone must have both open at the present time

Slightly fruity sweet start with a somewhat artificial touch of pineapple. It mixes with some apricot and orange. Salt pushes forward again and again. Add some honey with a strange gum note.
      A slight medical undertone remains.

Certainly not a bad malt. But somehow it is a bit too smooth for me. The artificial sweetness displeases me. For the price, this is not a purchase for me. Since I like the 15er even better. He has more character.
    • Nose
Compared to the 15er is already darker and heavier. Glazed apricots in butter. Plum cake. Maple syrup. For me there is also a somewhat artificial sweetness. Also wine gum. Amarettini. Some tree bark.
    • Taste
Again only the fruits swirled in butter. Pretty sweet and buttery. Some honey was added to the fruits. Brittle. After that, it is less sweet and it comes beautiful chocolate notes. Then still oak flavor.
    • Finish
Chocolate with nuts. Licorice. Maybe some leather.

    Distillery tasting.
This is a very good whisky, unfortunately a bit too expencive.
Although different in taste, I feel the 15YO is of a similar quality and hence better value.

      Clean, sophisticated sherry nose.
      Dark chocolate, plums, raisins.
The softer fresh fruity Pultney character is hard to detect.
Not extreme in any way, but kind of compact, may benefit from some time in the glass.

In the smell similar to the old Old Pulteney 17yo. Milk chocolate, perfume, grapes, banana.

As for the taste, also the typical Old Pulteney, very similar to 17yo. More sour, less sweet and astringent. Pear, nectarine, apricot, vanilla cream and salty caramel.

Evaluated only on the basis of a sample in the Whisky Festival 2019 in Malá Morávka, however, on the first occasion I would like to submit it to a more thorough examination.

Water addition: No, that is very well balanced

Conclusion: Yummy, a whisky to drink away and makes with every sip fancy sea, the Sherryfinfish is not very pronounced, instead, the flavors complement each other very well, without mutually suppressing or fighting. And who likes salted peanut butter will love this one
    • Nose
very dense, ripe, yellow fruits (mirabelles, apricots, peaches), neat salt, a good portion of oak, salted caramel, peanut flavors and also very subtle smoke
    • Taste
soft, velvety appearance, great sweetness after a lot of yellow fruits, caramel, peanut butter, the salt is not so intense here, as well as the oak, which only brings some spice in the background
    • Finish
medium length, vanilla, fruity, tea, sweet-salty with some oak shavings, without any bitterness fades with the taste of lightly salted peanut butter with caramel pieces

That was non-love at first sight. Maybe the Malt wins with a lot of oxygen, time and habituation. Anyone who likes strong, rubber-sweet malts with sulfur will also like this Pulteney. I like that less now. You can try, but you do not have to.

The 18er stands out from the Pulteney range and seems to me already "designed". Also, the price of around 120 euros (as of 02/2019) is based on the current market situation. There I find the new 15-year-old Pulteney (ID: 116460) the basically better and for the distillery much more characteristic malt.

Really now? On the first nose the full rubber abrasion, sweetness with sulfur. That could be one of those rubberized edradours! I did not have such a nose on any Pulteney. Ok, after an hour in the glass and a lot of panning, there are still a few Bourbon Bar flavors; but the rubber nose (children's dinghy: a lot of ice cream and sunscreen) covers everything. So I'm really looking forward to this taste ...

In the mouth, the 18er then plays all his strength, brand Sherrykracher. Also sweet, but no longer as sweet as in the nose, now plum roaster and black berry. Similar in short moments to a refill sherry keg like the Fassstark Clynelish (ID: 121497). And at the second sip then again this Edradour rubber boat sweetie. Of matches.

In the finish is again supplemented with oak, before appear again these artificial sweet notes. Somehow I'm sensitive to something like that. If you like that, ok. I find the 18er Pulteney less successful after the first drams in mouthfeel and finish.

N: Peanut satay and grassy hessian.
T: This is even more on the money than the 15yo, being fuller with a more focused & purposeful direction.
    F: Decent wrap-up.
C: Solid. Well up there with the discontinued 17yo, though the two are totally different beasts and [grrr], with wildly different price-points also.

Nose: the nose is heavier, darker , more sherried and brooding. with dark chocolate, honey and cocoa, more of the apple pie, quite rich, with spices, black tea leaves, tobacco and even a smoky touch and a hint of salt.

Palate: thick and complex, dark fruit, chocolate, Xmas cake again, more ripe oranges, dark honey, tobacco, tea leaf, salty touches, old leather, chewable stuff.

Finish : dried fruit, prune, date, spices, cigar tobacco, wood.
