I've loved the HP 18yo since I've become a malthead and bought it as my 2nd or 3rd full bottle in a little shop in my village around 2002. I've always loved the intermingling of sherry, peat and really well integrated age that makes this dram so complex and sophisticated. The "Viking Pride" theme may be a bit of a weird marketing stunt that is absolutely unnecessary when you have a product of such high quality. I guess this marketing stuff makes this whisky surmount the 100 quid mark - which from a connoisseurs' pov is also unnecessary. In spite of that I'd still buy a bottle.
    • Nose
Rich complex barley, wild honey, white nougat, burning heather, herbs (bay leaf, lavender and thyme) and a wonderful aroma of roasted coffee. Really quite a complex and beautiful composition, there are good casks involved. No water needed. This noses older than 18 years and unlike any other single malt.
    • Taste
Cool and oily mouthfeel, getting richer, with a bit of bite just attacking the tongue after a few seconds. Very rounded, but never generic. It's a beautifully aged, dry and rich malt, with notes of stout ale, burnt raspberries infused with caramel, mint tea, something savoury like herbal butter spread on some nicely grilled beef, heather honey and soft, leathery, earthy peat whispering in the background and giving this whisky structure and complexity. You can really feel the beautiful marriage of good quality sherry and bourbon casks and showing off a textbook Highland Park distillery character.
    • Finish
Long, on soft dry peat, sea salt and honey. Just very, very good.

    • Nose
Fruit; Sherry; Sweet; Malt; Pagan; a hint of nut and a hint of citrus
    • Taste
Spicy; Oak; Sherry; Malt; Nut; soft and round; Fruit; the oak wonderfully discreet; fruity; Nut becomes stronger after a long time in the mouth
    • Finish
Oak, a hint of tobacco; a lot of spices; it remains a tobacco note and a bitter note, almost coffee, but it passes; Nut is really strong and clear; it gets a little bitter; a hint of citrus; only now do I notice a hint of smoke for the first time (quite discreet and beautiful); a decent campfire stays a long time

Nice whisky for sure, some dirty edges in the nose, it gets cleaner in taste and a little less exciting in the finish. But steady and pleasant dram for sure.
    • Nose
      87 87
Rich and full nose, with some dirty notes, some peat, sulphur, bonfire smoke and ash, some gazoline, salty. Then some fruitiness, apples, raisins.
    • Taste
      86 86
Some tingling mouthfeel on the tongue, more fruity now, prunes, raisins, honey, only a very slight part of peat. Pretty smooth, yet thick, full bodied.
    • Finish
      85 85
Smoother now, with some ash and smoke, some red fruits, honey. Middle long. Still some warming feeling.

Unfortunately a little sulfur in my batch. Why do they fill such barrels in the 18 year old ..... ?? Very disappointing.

Overall a solid, pleasant 18-year-old Highland Park, but the sherry influence in the taste is minimal, I missed it
    • Nose
      87 87
Fine, rich with mountain honey, with the aroma of heather and meadow grasses; light smoke in the background; fruits are not sweet, plum, apple; nutmeg and a touch of tobacco complete the picture.
    • Taste
      86 86
Continuation of the scent; oak notes are added to honey, wax and herbal motifs; citrus tones are more clearly audible; caramel and toffee - as derivatives of bourbon casks; but the sherry influence is almost not felt.
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium duration; woody tones took over, a lot of oak; menthol; less smoke; honey and heather have not gone anywhere, but you get used to them and no longer notice; tobacco and coffee hints.

A beautiful all-rounder, where nothing stands out, but nothing bothers. A good, balanced thing, for me the smell and the finish is a little stronger than the taste. Overall, it doesn't really suit my taste, but Highland Park 18 is certainly well done.
    • Nose
      87 87
The first thing you smell is the famous Highland Park heather, followed directly by light smoke. Slight sweetness, delicate floral aromas (lavender) and butterscotch. All of this is very balanced.
    • Taste
      83 83
A little orange, light sherry, a little smoke, with caramel, honey and vanilla. Slightly light, but very round.
    • Finish
      88 88
Medium length and balanced. In the finish, the caramel and honey really come into their own.

without water, with a little water orange marmalade is added

Conclusion: as always rock solid, very pleasant combination of balanced sherry notes and heather. No noticeable change to older batches
    • Nose
Toffee + caramel, subtle heather smoke, balanced, round, oak flavor, small sulfur edge, some cocoa, plum jam
    • Taste
balanced sherry, oak + subtle smoky note with a floral touch
    • Finish
Medium, here too the combination of light sherry and subtle smoke, smoldering oak, some wax, plum and furniture
