  1. Hupsende Hippie scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

The smell is nice, but in taste and aftertaste I expect more from a 14y. The taste lacks depth. It is too spicy, thin and alcoholic. It tastes young and unfinished. I also found the finish too short.
    • Nose
Aromatic and sweet. The port is clearly present. Furthermore, ripe raspberries and a deep sweet scent of overripe melon / peach.
    • Taste
First the melon / peach sweetness, but that disappears quite quickly. Then crisp red berries and sour apple.
    • Finish
(Too) short. The acidity of the taste remains, in addition it is dry and it becomes a bit bitter. In the background some liquorice and nut.

Fruity aroma with some pear, banana, port and vanilla.
    • Taste
      88 88
Very round taste, which is actually only disturbed by the alcohol, could be a little stronger, here too pear, port and vanilla, plus some lemon.
    • Finish
      87 87
The aforementioned aromas are joined by some nut, so that you get a very pleasant, but unfortunately a bit too short finish.

COLOR: dark gold, slightly reddish (without dye)

    - very intense present mixture of fruit and spice
    - PLV: still ok for originally about 45€, but there are better ones
for the price or 5€ more (e.g. Glenmorangie Quinta
Ruban), for currently 60€ I think it is clearly too expensive for the quality
    • Nose
fruity but also strong smell, dark berries, old grapes, oak, caramel, toffee, intense
    • Taste
Strong, spicy attack, changes into a more fruity note after a gasp in the mouth, confirming the dark berries and raisins, walnut, the raisins come out very strongly
    • Finish
      mild, soft, medium-length finish ;
long spicy aftertaste, becoming dry with some dark chocolate

N: port, red fruits, berries, vanilla and some oak in the background, banana, complex nose for 14 years

P: sweet and creamy, port fruits come first, then some tropical fruit from the bourbon oak, and then loads of dark chocolate and the typical Tomatin spicyness

F: long and very pleasant, love it!

Sample, tasted in two sessions a month apart. Good, this is quite a subtle port finish. Therefore preferred over the 18 for me. More complex and fresher than the 12. The fruit on the palate is the best bit!

Not super exciting but the best of the Tomatin range. The port gives a freshness that is missing in the other bottlings (just my taste).
    • Nose
      84 84
Soft, sweet, fruity, sour. Barely noticeable alcohol prickle. Sweet wine cask mustiness. Vanilla, raspberry, blackberry, rhubarb, icing sugar. Apple still shines through, perhaps even more than the 12. Malty chocolate biscuits. Takes water well, lots of water reveals an orange wine type of citric freshness. There is a nice mineral freshness to it all, mixing herbs and spices.
    • Taste
      85 85
Spicy, sweet, fruity. Musty wood and honey, a sweet maltiness throughout. Peaches, nectarines, apples, nice fruitiness.
    • Finish
      84 84
Nice and fruity. Apple, raspberry, chocolate and malty biscuits. Still lots of spices and a mixture of fresh and musty wood. Nutmeg, cinnamon.

  13. The_Osprey scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Tomatin 14yo Port Wood Finish 46%.

Pale golden; Pale but yet a dark shade of yellow-orange.

Aroma is pretty cohesive. Blood orange and pomegranate notes hint at the wine cask but they are set against more typical musty wood and fudgey caramel notes.

Taste is punchy, but not too much. Bottled at a good strength. Spiced orange peel. Some burnt wood. Nutmeg and pepper come through some thin fudgey flavours. Sparing on the port cask influence - which suits me down to the ground. Very well-judged actually. A solid whisky. Does everything really well. Good flavour intensity, spice cuts through the richness, bottled at the right ABV. The person who put this together knew what they were doing. No complaints from me. Probably about as good as a port cask finished whisky in this style could be for me. 3.55/85

    NOSE
Mixed berry muffin, Vanilla frosting, honey, malt, wax, baking spice and touches of nuts and cocoa.

Warm and elegant with a solid delivery of pastry dessert-level notes.

    PALATE
Mixed berry taffy, vanilla, honey, cocoa, malt, nuts and wax with touches of spice, dried orchard fruit and pastries.

This Tomatin 14 Years Port Casks is fun, tasty and has a nice pairing of light and dark notes that come through balanced.

    FINISH
Medium -> Fruity, malty, pastry dessert sweet and fades a bit nutty.

  15. erwinnlim scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

I've generally not enjoyed Port cask matured whisky in the past but I decided to take a punt with Tomatin as I've always loved all their wine cask finishes and I've not been disappointed. All I can say is Tomatin hit it on the nose calling themselves the softer side of the highlands. This is a wonderfully balanced and delicate dram that is so easy to sip. Value (£50) : 8/10
    • Nose
It starts off with sweet fruits. I'm thinking some stewed apples, cherries and plums covered in a caramel sauce. Then I get more tart berry compote like strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. Then the spirit character comes through, there's cereal and malt. Lovely breadiness to this too. Cocoa nibs bring some depth and richness. It has a wonderful nutty aroma to it as well, I'm thinking a mixture of walnuts and pecan pie. At the end some chilli spice warms the nose.
    • Taste
Nice and mouth coating. It's extremely well balanced with more malty cereal and ginger biscuits. Now salted caramel notes. The nuttiness remains, more walnuts now. I'm also getting a hint of creamy milk chocolate. Those sweet and sour fruits from the nose come through just enough to add an extra layer on top of the wonderful spirit. The port character is evident, but it takes nothing away from that fruity Tomatin spirit, it just adds to it.
    • Finish
Medium to long in length and slightly drying. It continues where the palate left off with sweet berries coating a malty centre with a warming ginger and cinnamon spice. As the finish goes on, the sweet chocolate turns darker and brings more bitterness to the finish, balancing out the sweetness.

A port finish I like? How did this happen? I don't know, but I can't but recommend this fairly priced and likable dram.
    • Nose
A bit yeasty, with dark fruit, cigarette smoke, mixed nuts (cashew and walnuts), dessert cakes, and butterscotch.
    • Taste
Better than Glenfiddich 15yo for sure. A firmer, sweeter body with ripe fruit and just a whiff of chocolate and cigarettes. Suffers a bit from being overly round, but this is not bad at all, and there are no off notes. The make is a bit rough, but nothing to cry about. I'm surprised how much value this 14yo delivers.
    • Finish
Surprisingly long, starting with ripe fruit and veering toward gummy candy sweetness in the tail.

  18. Whisky Hamster scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

In a way the relatively cheap price for a 14 yo port cask finish malt reflects the quality. Nice, but not overly complex and the port finish is there, but far away from a full port maturation. Nice easy sipper with a touch red port fruits. Don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed.

    # 382 / 2019-08-27: A very uncomplicated and tasty malt, but certainly with great fruit (berries and nectarines), walnut notes and a pleasant mouthfeel knows how to convince. The nose could be a bit stronger. You do not really notice the port finish on it, but the impression is also different than when it comes to sherry or wine barrels. Sprittig or shank I do not find him. The reverberation could also be a bit longer.

I didn't like this whisky. The nose is rather unpleasant on my taste with a lot of sulfur and quite sour overall. The palate is much better, actually more or less pleasant. But the finish again pulls the whole impression down with the burning alcohol feeling, which, well, disappears quite soon. Likely I had just a sample and wouldn't run to a shop for buying a full bottle.
    • Nose
Sulfur, yeast, blackberry, red currant, red dry wine, pear, lemon zest, green apple, sweet notes - butter and vanilla after adding water
    • Taste
Sweet, malty, walnuts, some toffee, black currant pie, oranges, slightly spicy at the end

A typically decent entry-level whisky. Unfortunately not more.
    • Nose
A port fan will not be happy from the nose. With the second and third nose you can spot the port a bit. OK.
But everything else also includes the red fruits, everything washed too much soft.
    • Taste
You get the impression that he has a bit of everything but never enough of anything !? He disappoints me.
    • Finish
Actually relatively long and very spicy / alcoholic, but with some undertones that bother me about it. Rather indefinable.

Tawny: the oloroso of port? Expect to see a lot more tawny finishes coming along from Tomatin and elsewhere.

N: With a full two year tawny finish, it’s perhaps unsurprisingly rather sweet, which probably explains why it’s proved so popular amongst customers.
T: Same again, hitting the sweet spot with lots of sultana juice and fruity biscuit crumble. Dalmore-esque at times.
    F: Peach crumble to finish.
C: Whilst a successful marriage for some, others will simply hate this style. Like with Springbank’s Longrow Red, I’m in the middle somewhere.

    Scores a C+

Full voluminous start. Spicy honey and sweet caramel. Slightly nutty. And then this pushes the fruit compote of Portfinish forward. The fruits are difficult to name, but it smells ripe and juicy. Almost a bit like a cognac.
    • Taste
Mild and creamy. Less sweet than the nose. But now the dark fruits are full of berries and plum and also the nuts. The finish clearly dominates the Tomatin character in the taste.

Rating: 76 points / € 25.- Note: Pretty light in color, nose also quite light, strong Lowlander character. Father finds him soapy. In conclusion, good on the nose and in pallet, aftertaste is very disappointing. Blind tasted during BOL tasting in December 2017
    • Nose
Lowlander character, fairly light. As far as he stands longer, he becomes more fruity. Light fruit.
    • Taste
      Creamy, soft. Very pleasant sweetie
    • Finish

Tomatin 14 year old Portwood Finish works nicely, with good interplay between fruity character and hefty spicing. A drop of two of water (no more please!) is just enough to take reduce the tannins at play here, resulting in well balanced dram quite suited to enjoying after-dinner on a cool autumnal night.

    https://www.thedramble.com/tastings/tomatin/tomatin-14-year-old-portwood-finish/
    • Nose
Sweet stewed red fruits. Redcurrants, raspberries and cranberries all cooked down with sour cherries, apricots and plums. Toffee, butterscotch and vanilla alongside some light herbalness (potpourri) and delicate nutmeg spicing. The addition of water brings out some baking notes of pastries and light nuttiness.
    • Taste
A good mouthfeel which brings both sweetness as well as some bitter tannins. Blackberries, red currants, peaches and apples all make for some intense fruitiness. They are merged nicely with some heavy spicing – pepper, cinnamon and a hint of cumin. Deeper notes of chocolate cake and coffee grounds stem from the port influence. Water reduces the bitterness and makes the fruits seem quite syrupy.
    • Finish
Medium in length with dried fruits and oak tannins.

Well, maybe I wouldn't by the 14-year-old Tomatin, but with this Port finish this lad is quite an easy drinker. Had some Balvenie 21 year old portwood recently and this fellow is (concerning the notes) quite congruent with the Balvenie. Now the funny thing is, I would prefer the Tomatin 14 Port.Concerning price/performance ratio: 8/10
    • Nose
Red fruits, raisins, apricots, berries, apples, honey, vanilla.
    • Taste
Again: Red fruits, raisins, apricots, berries, apples, honey, vanilla, a bit bitter (some tannins way in the back).
    • Finish
      Short. Fruits and some chocolate.

A tame and affordable wood finish. Inoffensive and easy to drink. Lacks originality, but the packaging, as well as the presentation (NCF,NC, 46% Vol.) makes up for it.
    • Nose
Typical port notes. Apricot and strawberry jam up front, orange peel follows right after. A touch of earthy bitterness arises. Dissipates into caramel and light vanilla.
    • Taste
Rather light on the tongue. Sweet and honeyed, warm tannins, and vanilla ice cream. Associations of dusty attics and cappuccino.
    • Finish
Medium-short. Caramelized oak and mild strawberry-syrup.

  52. rottendon scored this whisky 79 points Connoisseur

I really do not think it's that bad, it's also very easy and pretty straightforward. The slightly sprittige he somehow makes up for it, only from the port you just do not notice much. On port reminds there only the color. Due to the extremely weak nose and the too short finish I feel really hard. 79 or 80? Have to ask the base ... The base has decided, 79.4.
Notes from an online chat tasting.
    • Nose
First sprinting and at least as closed as the 12er. So for the currant jam you need a lot of imagination, but some berry is there, but seems slightly artificial. Unpleasant until now I find only the alcohol that bites so that you can not smell anything. Cocoa: Check! Deep down there is also this fermented, what the others already had. So maybe there is some honey left, but alcohol really dominates everything here. When heated, it bites properly, but it's really full of honey and a few berries on top.
    • Taste
The consistency is very thin, but he has alcohol here, too, was to be expected. Otherwise cocoa and chocolate here, maybe a little honey, fruitiness I think not, but some mint. Tannins back in tracks, but not really. I like it much better than the nose! At the second sip he gets a little bit sprightly at the finish.
    • Finish
Hm, as you might expect, a short break. Do not even know what's going on, a bit chocolaty maybe ... and change ... The finish was shorter than the Legacy. So yes, he rehearses, but he has disappeared so quickly from the tongue ...

Strange for a portfinish. Unround nose, but interesting finish. Still kind of tasty. About 6 months ago, I had this filling in a blank. Without concrete notes, however, the trend was the same.
    • Nose
Red fruits, currants and grapes, artificial alcoholic sweetness and, at the same time, acidity
    • Taste
First vinous, half-sweet grapes, medium cocoa chocolate, slight sharpness on the tongue
    • Finish
Pretty pleasant. Sweet and berry notes, make room for spicy wood flavors, cocoa and espresso then to the end. The finish I find the best here.

rather tart / dry than sweet, this is berry fruit (difficult to define, tendency blackberry / blackcurrant), tart red wine, dark chocolate, some cinnamon ... and what nutty ... walnut? Pecan? a touch of maple syrup?
    • Taste
half a second of fresh rosé on the tip of the tongue, then fruity red wine, then chocolate, cocoa and intense (whale) nuttiness, feels strangely juicy and dry at the same time, and despite being 3% more than Legacy / 12, it is tastier but not stronger, rather thinner
    • Finish
medium to long, warm, cocoa, walnut, a light, tart berry note

Nice dram where the red fruit is more prominent in the smell then in the taste. The finish is somewhat on the short side.
    • Nose
Red fruits, strawberries, raspberries, at some point even jam-like, some lemon, cinnamon, dried fruits, raisins and dried cranberries, some nutty notes and honey.
    • Taste
Oaky, dark chocolate, coffee, pepper, again some red fruits and a whiff of tobacco.
    • Finish
Medium length. At first it is somewhat bitter, later on there are also some sweet notes. Coffee, dark chocolate, nutmeg, soeme citric fruit, grapefruit, some dried fruits and caramel.

No exuberant port of whisky. Vat has not had much influence. The main point is fresh, soft and supple from the entry-level bottles. No high flyer, but pleasant.
    • Nose
Soft and slightly sweet, with spicy notes. Red fruit and plums. Over time, more and more port (no connoisseur of port wines).
    • Taste
Modest. All aspects of the nose are present, but in a very careful way.
    • Finish
Pretty long, sweet and somewhat cedar / note tones that disturb the soft subtle play of this dram.

the nose activated my gag reflex,
taste was nice, finish was as abhorring as the nose
    • Nose
      red fruits, light port cask,
      butter, beer head (foam)
    • Taste
      very oily, salty, butter
    • Finish
      alcohol, grass, detergent, freshly
      cut grass

not my thing the drop, the bitterness and the idiosyncratic acidity of the fruit note I do not like so much, but good quality is present
    • Nose
herbaceous bitterness, hints of glue, berry fruity acidity, oak, clean - slightly applied aromas, smells more like red wine, because after Port, me more time in the glass vanishes the bitterness, the fruit notes are more beautiful - red plum compote with cinnamon and red wine
    • Taste
round, soft, then come red fruits and immediately bites the alcohol in the tongue, the burning stops again and the mouth fills with fruity, sour, slightly sweet aromas, dusty oak resonates
    • Finish
tart - spicy, cinnamon-plum, slightly alcoholic, warming, slightly bitter

Maybe a side note: The cork looks very high quality and is extremely pleasant to attack.
    • Nose
The Port wine smells already when uncorking and first pouring. The Bourbon Bar flavors are also clearer, everything is very "heavy" over. He reminds me a bit of the Aberlour Double Cask 16y in color and smell.
    • Taste
Comes very strong in the mouth - rebellious on the tongue, but no trace burning. The Portfinish comes through beautifully, later some oak and then dark fruits. The second sip a really nice Rumtopf note.
    • Finish
Medium long, the dark mix of port and fruit stays in the mouth.
