GlenDronach is a bit of a one-trick pony, but boy, they know how to make a great sherry malt! Recent batches of the 'Allardice' are much older than 18 years, and the age shows. Heavy sherry notes, oranges and rich spices bewitch the nose, intermingled with hazelnuts, roasted coffee and subdued herbal freshness. The taste is intense, full-bodied and very much in line with the aroma, culminating in a substantial, lasting and chocolaty bitter finish. Not quite as complex as the fantastic 15-year-old Revival, but who am I to criticize this superb whisky!

Clearly the older brother of the 15. But even more sherry dominating and a little too much on tap. A matter of taste. The quality is remarkable. PLV clearly perfect.
    • Nose
As something special you immediately have the red wine notes and the well-known matchstick effect. I like that. Then the whole Christmas market with good espresso in the air.
Soft woody spice notes in the background.
    • Taste
If the wood now cuts through, then it tends to be in the bitter direction. Too bad. But the creamy sherry effect comes quickly. Now orange caramel in plum jam. It is full-bodied and wonderfully oily. But ... something bothers me on the bitter side. Still a good palate!
    • Finish
Rather long and with a mouthfeel similar to cough syrup, he slowly leaves the stage. It stays wonderfully sweet. A woody, cooling menthol taste in the background. Has something. But it doesn't make it onto the shelf.
Thanks to André for the great rehearsal.

    Glendronach 18,

Thank you for opening my eyes. I will therefore never be in a relationship with a "Sherry Bomb".
However, I admit it without difficulty, you did not leave me indifferent. I know that you are more than your age but that suits you very well. I understand all those who only have eyes for you.

sweetness and flavors aside for this 18 year old, sweeter, more Spey!
    • Nose
wood, fruit walls, more on the quince cooked, very grassy, fruity, with honey, dried fruit. the sherry is to my taste recessed, a little dust, wood well present.
    • Taste
spices away, with a sensation of fruit and pastry! wood, malt, and a length under the palate.

  10. whiskyinstitut scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

In my opinion, this is the perfect introduction to strong sherry whisky nowadays.
    • Nose
Chocolatey and oaky sherry aromas, spicy forest soil, warm raisins, a bit leathery, sugar beet syrup
    • Taste
Creamy and chocolatey onset, quite powerful, spicy oak, again the slightly sour forest soil note
    • Finish
Again creamy and chocolaty, balanced, warming

  11. Dr.Nose scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

The nose is less aromatic and more playful than the new 15 year old version of GlenDronach. Also slightly more subdued with more direct malty and nutty notes and a tad more grassy (freshly cut grass). With tones of walnut and apple peel, comes loose well after a few minutes. Show wet earth and old roses and then develop aromas of Turkish Delight and orange blossom water. The taste is very nice with delicious aromas of sherry, coffee, steamed fruit, toasted walnut bread, chocolate with some more notes of eaux-de-vie de fruits (kirsch and raspberries). The medium finish is pleasant with returning sherry and eaux-de-vie (raspberry) tones.Notes from internet

Pours a dark copper. Scent is very intense, mature wood, grains, dried (dark) fruits. mild nuttyness from the oxidative barrel. Taste is full indeed. Quite sharp at first, clearly (over)showing it's 'modest' 46% as a powerfull beast, but provides enough aroma to smoothly balance things out. Clear sherry notes, mild sweetness , mature oak. this is very enjoyable ! refined fruity notes (green tree fruits). All in a smooth balance. Medium full body. Very well made stuff !

Nose. Blackberry, currant, raspberry jam, cherries, dried blueberries, brown raisins, black dried apricots, dates, baked apples, pears and orange, melted creamy toffee with cane sugar, coffee, chocolate, fruit tobacco, hazelnuts, dry wood, light smoke, leather , slightly earthy-mushroom motifs, cinnamon, ginger. Noble, powerful, moderately sweet aroma, mainly concentrated on the theme of dried fruits and berry jams, but also giving a general idea of the richness of aging in sherry barrels.

Taste. Sweet compote of berries, fruits and dried fruits with gingerbread, marshmallows and cane sugar with a slight sourness and bitterness from dark chocolate with hazelnuts and orange, as well as from ginger and tobacco. Harmonious, rich in nuances, balanced in all components, not stale, bright and memorable taste.

2017 bottling (22 years?) - pretty impressed considering this isn't normally my favorite style. Such an excellent nose and I love the interplay between spice, tobacco, oak and fruity notes on the palate. Score wise... maybe around 91/100 for the richness/complexity, although maybe slightly held back by the 46% ABV.

Very coppery sherry, quite dry, deep, fruity, spicy pear, rhubarb compote, fresh leather, plum, wood. Varnish and a hint of camphor. Excellent in the mouth, the fruits are varied and give on candied cherry, sweet potato, granny smith apple, quince, apricot. Green tea. It is slightly acidic, and delicious, even pastry, sponge cake, chocolate fondant, praline. Long finish which gives on earth, liquorice and charcoal. A few ground coffee beans, a pinch of pepper. Cinnamon.

Sweetly sherried with a citric sour burst and honey coming through and some woodspice that gives it backbone, but not enough 3D structure, leaving it a bit flat and one-dimensional compared to the single casks and 15yo Revival. This would be a nice dram to introduce your girlfriend to single malt whisky...but I also detect a slight sulfur note, so it depends.

actually prefer this to the both above mentioned releases. It lacks the youthful vibrancy of the sherry cask influence, and that is exactly what I like so much. It feels much more integrated and distinguished, things I like to see in a whisky of this age.
    • Nose
      87 87
The sherry influence is clear from the start. A bowl filled with currants, a bar of 50% chocolate, and a slightly over-baked cake crust. Give it some time and then almond cake and a whiff of an old library are revealed. I find it distinguished and balanced. I could even call it somewhat restraint. The sherry cask influence is less vibrant, nicely integrated into the spirit, and feels mature. Add to the whole some hot dried apricots, before it develops into liquorice, hints of dried black currants and dried cranberries, and some cranberry juice.
    • Taste
      86 86
The palate starts with raisin cake, followed by roasted hazelnuts, could also be pine nuts, black currant juice, and fresh walnuts. Each sip posseses a nutty finish, and there are dreads of dry Oloroso sherry throughout the palate. There are also chocolate brownies and coffee. It becomes slightly to dry, very dry in fact, like putting a spoon of cacao powder and coffee powder in your mouth.
    • Finish
      87 87
      More of the above.

Quite delicious, but somehow not the enthusiasm that I had hoped for. Probably I had too high expectations after I had learned to love Glendronach and only recently had the 18-year-old in the glass for the first time. 84 points.
    • Nose
Sherry, oak, leather! And in a great and balanced combination! Dark fruit flavors form with the oak something fruity-chocolate and the slightly musty leather flavors give it something special. The musty has something sweet. The oak provides but for a generally tartier character! Over time, the oak increases and the fruity side fades into the background.
    • Taste
Full and intense with pleasant tingles. Sherry and leathery liquorice dominate, the classic oak is a bit behind. Rather dry. With the second sip comes more oak. Liquorice .... That's all in all good!
    • Finish
The whisky stays in the mouth and throat for a long time, but not very warm.

  77. Avatar scored this whisky 89 points Expert Junior

Spicy in the nose. First leather, pencil shavings. Then chocolate, cafe noir biscuits, very (dark) fruity. Intense taste that develops strongly in the mouth: full and soft. Here again the spiciness, but combined with sweetness. Long finish; a little dry / tannins.

    • Nose
Intense sherry, dark fruits, blackberries, dried apricots, plums, overripe cherries, wood, light glue notes, dark chocolate, dark honey, also has a slightly tactile touch.
    • Taste
Very intense chocolate, Mon Cherie, interplay between sweetness and spice, you notice the long Fassreifung. Will be a bit dry, but not too much, in comparison I find the revival drier.
    • Finish
The chocolate remains nutty, the interplay of sherry flavors and barrel reminds me a bit of trail mix. Would describe the finish as medium long.

      Spicy Oloroso sherry notes, cinnamon, dark red ripe fruit, brown sugar, coffee, chocolate and a light earthiness;
    • Taste
      Oily-syrupy, dark red ripe fruit, spicy with a little pepper, or ginger, mouth-filling, dry, distinct oak note;
    • Finish
Long, dry, spicy, clear oak! Beautiful Dram!

  84. St. Pauli scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

A very good dram. The nose was a little too sweet to my taste, but the palate and the finish really deliver. A good semi-standard bottling.
    • Nose
Big time oxidising grapes (combi of PX and Palomino), chocolate, caramel, peanuts (snickers???), toffee, prune, raisins.
    • Taste
The taste is fresher, with less sugar-driven sensations. It's medium bodied, still on oxidising grape and prune, but now also more on dark fruit, a bit of sulfur, maggi, chocolate, almond and tobacco.
    • Finish
Pleasantly drying and sour. Red fruits, tannins, oak spice (clove, nutmeg, ginger, pepper) and a faint nuttiness.

N: A potent youthful mix with a sweet-vegetal funk [Clynelish, Mortlach?], and descriptors including treacle sponge, powdered matcha, a touch of brown sauce, butter biscuits and dried confectionary candy bits. There's a lot more here when time allows.
T: Softer than expected and very controlled - therefore the maturer of the bunch, with a squidgy, sweet tawny-port body seasoned with a little salt. Very delicious juice.
F: Rolls on, tasty sweet-to-sour with a dash of double cream and a pinch of eucalyptus~aniseed heat-fresh. Nice dry finish, a little fruity but plenty sweet at the end and in the main.
C: Overall sweet and moorish. Rather different in character to the last Allardice i tried last year [88 points], but more similar in profile to a batch i tried 4-5 years back where the sherry influence was also slight. Good stuff for sure but still a far cry from those brilliant [15yo] Revival’s.

N: Aah yes, like the Revival this has that tomato/tamari quality [close comparisons were made with it and Karuizawa’s ‘Spirit of Asama’ recently] - and like the 15yo, this 18yo also has a youthfulness coupled with tasty, lickable oak.
T: Balanced throughout, no surprises there coming from Glendronach and all - and with lovely sulphury hues
F: Tails off appropriately. Super blending of quality stock
C: With the Revival still out of commission [2016], it's this, the 12yo WB or Glendronach’s 'experiments' - yep, nearly everyone’s involved in the NAS games. The 21yo Parliament WB is still a good bet but this 18yo trumps it easily.

Just like Revival, this one is Oloroso matured, maybe a bigger share of refill casks here make it less obvious and less complex. It feels like it's a toned-down cousin of the 15YO.
    • Nose
A rather dry side of Oloroso, earth, mushrooms, nuts, gunpowder, and signature stewed fruits. It's not as obvious as Revival, more toned-down and much drier.
    • Taste

Very dark it comes into the glass, almost brown, and immediately a wonderful fruity aroma rises to my nose. Plums, overripe apples, cloves, gingerbread spice. Oh, a first drop runs me mild and oily over the tongue, but then unfolds a strong aroma, which now combines all fruits to a spicy compote. A sherry note is added, slightly vanilla, now reminds me of a Yamazaki. You can taste the age, the complexity. Great 18 year old whisky, which is still affordable and can enrich any (small) collection ...

This is a perfect example of too much sherry but it is of good quality which is why it smashes anything from Dalmore in the 15-18 year age range.

In my opinion a small downside driven by a barely detectable scent of sulphur.

In general, a very good dram worth buying

    Color: Mahogany

Nose: Furniture polish, dried plums and raisins. This is quite a dense nose, it feels thick and punchy. Also some dates, overripe banana and an ever so slight hint of sulphur.

Palate: This arrives much smoother than I expected with some figs and oak. Then come some peppers, nutmeg, green herbs and oranges. Quite an oily mouthfeel and gradual development.

Finish: This continues the smoothness, some berries and raisins to be found, it's medium to long.

This one needs some time in the glass. It's quite complex, but I find the nose more interesting than the taste. I expected a much heavier kick on the palate, which most other tasting notes seem to have. Maybe the newer bottlings are a bit more mellow?

Prune, coffee grounds, orange, we feel the drought of Sherry, wet wood, with aeration comes from cocoa. Attack on coffee then cocoa liquor, finally the power is revealed with just enough tannins. Long finish on coffee, prune and chocolate. Dry and greedy at the same time.

Very great aroma, unfortunately it weakens a little in the mouth. It lacks depth and I find it too smooth.
    • Nose
A very sweet and heavy sherry nose with many dark fruits such as plums, raisins, cherries and juicy, sugar sweet orange. Very fruity the good ... It is not easy to find more, but after a while, coffee comes through and something Christmas ... nuts, chocolate and Chrisstollen ... :-)
    • Taste
Sweet and dark chocolate with a hint of oak. Then a few fruits, grapes and oranges. Some pepper.

    It was a gift - I appreciate!

A Single Malt matured in Oloroso Sherry casks - very strong and you may find some quite dominant sulphur notes respectively some empty space, which can be interesting but also disturbing.

    Christmas cake ...

Recommend to invest in the 21 year old Glendronach Parliament -

which is in my opinion the best standard Glendronach.

    • Nose
The first squeeze and I do not believe my senses, the gentle aroma of raisins, chocolates, coffee tones, I still feel the port wine, the true liquefied splendor in the glass, what a smell, that's the real peak! I could smell her again and again, she calls for it. Here we move far more than 90 points, I am thrilled to discover the jewel again, while the scent of GlenDronach Allardice has set a high bar and I am curious to keep it going and taste.
    • Taste
The first tongue and I feel a dense chocolate, raisins, oversized grapes, oranges. Not as stunning as in the smell, but still above average and very decent! And finally the flavor - and here it turns out that there is no thorn-free pink. From somewhere comes the tanned wood, or even something burned up, which does not bother me so much and a bit of the impressive impression of it. Maybe I only feel it and others will not mind, but I have to take this into account.

The colour is deep gold (like tawny) and the nose has malty, nutty notes and is a touch more grassy (freshly cut grass) with hints of walnut and apple peels. After a few minutes there are hints of wet earth and old roses, as well as aromas of Turkish Delight and orange blossom water .The taste is very beautiful with wonderful aromas of sherry, coffee, steamed vegetables, toasted walnut bread, chocolate with more notes of eaux de vie de fruits (raspberries and kirsch). The medium aftertaste is pleasant with returning sherry and raspberry notes!

Nose: Coffee, mocha, cake (Christmas tree), nuts, dried fruit, fruit paste. Well melted and slightly tart.
Palate: Always coffee and cake. Becomes lemony with aeration.
Final: The coffee turns into mocha, the cake is still there and the nuts. Long

    Comments:
It is less complex than the 15 years but sweeter, more bewitching,
easier to drink. That's why I put him 1pts more but
it is only a question of personal preference. Some,
    prefer (will) 15 years
