    • Nose
First Association: Schwartau Extra Strawberry Vanilla! Very dominant fruity, especially strawberries, raspberries and cherries stand out. Vanilla / caramel, some honey, juicy oranges and already slightly spicy oak notes are noticeable. In the background there is always a pleasant camp fire smoke.
    • Taste
Sweet, creamy and oily. Dark fruits with a slightly acidic impact are quickly gaining dominance. The 46% by volume are very well integrated and give the drop the necessary power. More strawberries, raspberries, a few red apples, forest honey and the first spicy notes of the 12-year-old whisky are noticeable. In the background, a fine campfire smoke envelops all flavors without ever becoming too dominant. Some bittersweet chocolate is already added.
    • Finish
Medium long, slightly smoky, the fruit notes give way to a noticeable oak spiciness. Again some dark chocolate and getting drier. All in all, very harmonious!

  2. rottendon scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Price / performance killer. Amazingly complex in the nose for his age and otherwise just delicious and tasty.
    • Nose
Soft smoke and some citrus fruit right from the start, berry fruits add to the bouquet in a very short time and the smoky notes are not only clearer but also more defined. A nice little fire is burning, on which the berries are roasted. After a little more time, some iodine, furniture polish, disinfectants and bacon are added, all very discreet. Mineral notes and fruit panna cotta complete the impression with some fennel and mint. The whole thing is warmed up a little sweeter and heavier, the sour notes for the first time become really clear and enhance the impression of fruity berries. Much more complex than expected, and quite appetizing ...
    • Taste
Very soft on the go with very slow power delivery. The mouthfeel is quite fluid. First, sweet and sour parts are in the mouth together and also support the impression of fresh berry fruit, perhaps in honey. Very late, notes of dark chocolate appear and give first indications that he is already 12 years old.
    • Finish
The finish is clean, and if it were not for the peaty parts, it would be very short. It sounds pretty chunky fast and leaves a nice, smoky memory on the tongue.

  3. Cask1988 did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

What a delight! Ardmore combined with sherry casks is a perfect couple but this one proves that Port casks also can deliver.
    • Nose
A sweet and rather heavy nose. The 46% abv seems to be working quite perfect here. Usual suspects with figs, dried plumbs and sultana’s but it’s being complimented with a really earthy kind of peat smoke and charcoal. This is what I often get with Ardmore. It’s a completely different style of peat then Islay for instance. Also whiffs of star anise and black tea.
    • Taste
Soft, sweet, creamy and with dried spices. Good body. Again I get flavors of tea and also it seems to have quite some tannins. It’s making this whisky a bit dry. For me it’s within the limits but I can imagine people tend this to be a bit too dry. Tastewise this one can handle a drop or two of water.
    • Finish
Medium length finish. Again sweet but with a beautiful amount of smoke/peatsmoke. It gives a bit of a coastal experience combined with smoked veggies and mildly smoked meat.

An absolute buy recommendation for around 40-50 bucks. BFYB? Quite personal but for me: yep!

Complex and very round, nice sweetness and subtle smoke. Excellent PLV.
    • Nose
Pleasant smoke combined with slight sweetness. Spicy, light fruit. Alcohol is not felt.
    • Taste
Smoke, spicy pepper. Fruity sweet, very complex and harmonious. Drying.
    • Finish
Very fruity, long. Seasoning and light smoke.

[November, 2015]  I emptied a bottle together with friends that I bought for 49 Euros in October, 2015.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 85.  My notes state an easy-to-drink and enjoyable dram without any special characteristics.  The port finish is recognisable but not dominant at all.  Quaffable...

Was a birthday present. And what can I say ... delicious, tasty, good!
    • Nose
Hm ... I'll say so. The colleague smells like standing in a bed of fresh, red fruits. Fruity and light to earth. The neighbor has the grill on and the smoke pulls you into the bed. Spear of charcoal smoke and subtly fleshy.
    • Taste
Slightly spicy onset. The immediately goes into a creamy fruit sweetness. The colleague tastes like he smells. Pleasant oak flavor with a trace, smoke comes to and around 'the story' beautiful. Tasty, tasty.
    • Finish
Some bitter, smoked nut chocolate. Slightly dry. Nevertheless, the fresh fruit sweetness remains medium.

Overall a good fruity-spicy and slightly smoky malt. But it lacks a bit of intensity and complexity for a lasting impression. PLV ok.
    • Nose
      85 85
fruity with berries and orange; spices (cinnamon), slightly peppery; plus a nicely integrated light smoky note
    • Taste
      84 84
nice balance of fruitiness and spiciness; increasingly light pepper note; behind it lies a pleasant smoky note
    • Finish
      84 84
sweet-spicy; then peppery lingering in the mouth; smoky; getting slightly dry

  9. Totoro scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Similar in character to Talisker Port Ruighe as both the port influence and the phenol levels are concerned. The Ardmore smoke is less coastal / salty and more herbal / earthy, though.
A sweet and winey nose. Some creamy vanilla and a hefty helping of fruity esters combine to create an impression of raspberries and strawberries in yoghurt. Behind (or on top, or to the side of, depending on your favorite locational metaphor) that there are damp autumnal forest floors, smoked cheese (Scamorza, anyone?), some serious umami (soy sauce, Marmite) and bonfire embers. With time, a leathery, nutty sensation comes up as well, almost as in a sherry-matured whisky. Nice nose altogether!

In the mouth, the sense of fruit yoghurt continues. Taste is sweet all the way though, even when the sweetness is joined by some peppery oak in the finish. Speaking of the finish, it's... let's say "extended" rather than long. This is due primarily to the peated malt; I don't find that the casks do a lot of work here. Sadly, the fruity sweetness leaves an impression of artificial sweeteners (aspartame, saccharin, and the like) after it has died down, which subtracts from the experience.

To my mind, the combination of vegetal, herbal notes and sweet fruity aromas clashes rather than meshes, at least on the tongue. The initially mentioned Talisker & Port combo is a better fit in this regards.
That being said, this is still quality stuff, properly aged, with a good-to-very-good nose and a decent ABV. I'm just not enthusiastic about the port influence on the palate.

Port is there for sure. Very mild on peat. Its kinda suprisingly mild taste wise for a port cask dram. Though it is fruity and juicy. I was hoping for a bit more. Not a bad dram though. I am just not hooked that much on heavily sherried (well... "ported" I guess :)) drams. In this category I would rather go for kinda similar but more peated Benromach 10.
    • Nose
Dark fruits, acidic, a touch of peat, alcohol, sweetness.
    • Taste
A bit of peat again, spicy, caramel, strong sherry notes, acidic again. A bit creamy. Sweet and citrusy. A bitter as well. Like a dark grapefruit. Some maritime notes as well. Also a bit of that fireplace smoke.
    • Finish
Sherry/port again, spiciness again. Dark tea.

  12. Dre73 scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

The nose starts off very vivid and pleasant, in taste things get a little less versatile, in the finish some more sweetness arrives. I like the nose best, but overall it's still a pleasant dram for sure.
    • Nose
      86 86
Very pleasant nose, with some gentle peat, fake leather and rubber, red fruits, and some sour notes, citrus. Woodsmoke.
    • Taste
      84 84
Pretty smooth now and more flat than the nose would suggest. Red fruits dominate now, with a peaty and smoky part on the background.
    • Finish
      83 83
Still smooth, more sugar-like sweetness adds to the red fruitiness, a bit of bitter ash, medium long.

In addition to the three detailed evaluations, the price, if necessary colouring, if necessary cooling filtration, age, alcohol, subsequent purchase and overall impression are also included in the evaluation. I have 10 categories with a maximum of 10 points each, arithmetically this is 56/100.
    • Nose
8/10 - very fruity, sweet, pleasant
    • Taste
      5/10 - Too much sharpness
    • Finish
      5/10 - Too much sharpness.

Due to the additional maturation in former port wine barrels, the supposedly young whisky becomes a little softer and more mature, without the distillery character disappearing completely. While it can be assumed that the best ex-bourbon casks in the warehouse were not used for this bottling, the subsequent finish in the port wine casks brings an interesting combination of the light peat smoke and the sweetness of the port wine.

    https://www.aboutwhisky.de/tastingnotes/ardmore-12-years-port-wood-finish/
    • Nose
The light smokiness combines great with the port wine. The smoke brings light medical notes, the aromas of the port wine are reminiscent of sweet fruit compote and fruit salad, and even a little bit of cotton candy due to the sweetness. In addition, a slightly sharp and cooling note can be felt on the nose, which is reminiscent of salty sea air, as well as a slightly metallic note. Over time, the port's sweetness steps aside to let citrus and pears through. Otherwise, the typical aromas of the boubon barrel, such as vanilla or caramel, can only be guessed at in the background.
    • Taste
The attack is just as strong in the mouth as it is in the nose. First the sweet port wine is in the foreground and the citrus fruits and pears can be found again. A slightly sharp tingling on the tip of the tongue is also noticeable. After a few seconds, the impression becomes a bit drier and spicier, which is due to the port wine's European oak barrels. The light peat smoke integrates nicely into the overall picture, but is even pushed into the background by the dominant sweetness of the port wine.
    • Finish
Departure is medium long, the sweetness lasts almost to the end and is accompanied by the light peat smoke and some spicy oak.

    Ardmore 12

It's actually already a classic, this Ardmore 12. Its strawberry-vanilla aroma in particular precedes its reputation. Anyone who deals with whisky cannot avoid a glass. Great PLV. An extra point for that!

N - In the first nose the smoke still pierces strongly. If you let the whisky linger briefly in the glass, the well-known strawberry-vanilla note immediately rises to the nose. Raspberries and cherries wrapped in pleasant smoke. Creamy, buttery texture. Behind it hides some wine gums.

M - Fruity, relaxed attack, generally a bit more reserved than the nose would suggest. Alcohol is very well integrated. Beautiful raspberries with pepper, a sweet and sour berry mix. Departure slightly woody-bitter, pleasantly smoky and not overpowering. The campfire glows on the tongue for a few minutes.

Best Bang for the buck. Nice complex nose, herbal with hints of mint. Also sweet vanilla notes and some caramel. Very subtile smoke. Strawberry marmalade. Oily on the palate, nice and round keeps up to the nose. Little dryness. Alcohol is very well integrated. Finish is medium long, moderate wood.Caramelized Strawberry again. Very nice!

Nice, pleasant highland smoke on the nose, rather warm. With red, sweet fruits (strawberries, raspberries) and vanilla.

Slightly peppery in the mouth and again fruity-sweet.

In the finish again pleasantly smoky, with a spicy oak, more on the coffee side.
    Length: 6/10

With the addition of water, it becomes even sweeter and creamier without losing its character.

Great highland smoke malt, which is wonderfully balanced between sweet and fruity port wine notes and smoky and spicy aromas.

    Grade: 2+

A yummy whisky, if only a little metallic towards the end. On the whole, the alcohol is well integrated and the interplay between the port aromas and the smoky highland distillate is fine. Not really a complex dram, but one to savour at a summer´s campfire.

I really like the nose of this painting. Find it quite consistent and the smoke is very well integrated and not intrusive. I would have liked to find the aroma profile on the palate and in the finish. Unfortunately it wasn't like that. Still a malt with a good PLV
    • Nose
      87 87
Fruity with lots of berries at the beginning, then quickly transitioning to citrus notes, mainly orange with a light smoke note, a little mint comes later paired with pepper, slightly sweet in the background with a touch of caramel and spices
    • Taste
      86 86
soft start, fruity and a delicate smoky note, then briefly go into sweetness with caramel and berries before it turns into sour notes. At the end there are more intense spices and pepper, the citrus notes from the nose only appear very briefly
    • Finish
      85 85
smoky, sweet and spicy, then dries out quickly. Here, too, the sour notes can still be felt

  23. Whisky Hamster scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Not spectacular, but a really competent, not too young, peated malt with port cask influence. Not inferior to the Glendronach Peated Port which imho only saw a limited run with higher pricing. Not a Benriach 17 Solstice in terms of power and complexity, but these are long gone and silly expensive now. So don't let your bias for "Ardmore as a less renown distillery" govern your purchases. Very solid product and fairly priced!

    • Taste
Medium onset, silky / oily mouthfeel. Smoke and sweet berries are immediately there, then takes over strong, peppery spicy oak, and milk chocolate, and dark caramel.

At the beginning I was taken by surprise by the sweetness, I had not expected that, but he tore it with time and his finish.
    • Nose
That he was so cute I would not have thought! Except sweet, there is nothing at all ... red fruit jam .. or something ..
After a while and the first sip he reveals something more: ripe strawberries, gooseberry, blackberry, a hint of caramel, which gets creamier with time.
    • Taste
Here, too, the sweetness dominates, creamy, the smoke that is said to be subtly added to it, whereby it flashes from time to time, quite briefly, even quite clearly. But still a sweet number.
    • Finish
Now he can do what I had hoped for from him. It gains in spiciness and in the mouth slightly occupied by the smoke takes place an interplay of sweetness and spice. I like it.

I like Ardmore, the Traditional Cask is one of my top 5. This one is different, a bit irritatingly fruity in the beginning, but you get used to it quickly. Overall, a round and complex whisky, which can be recommended without reservation.

For this price category it is a good daily dram that combines peat and fruity, it could please more people who are not attracted by too much peat and for which a light whisky has the favors. A whisky to enjoy the last days of summer. www.passionduwhisky.com
    • Nose
Nose: Sweet, fresh, fruity. Red berries, as on some grape varieties. Vanilla, tannins and a more vegetal influence. Grenadine, cinnamon.
    • Taste
Palate: Grasse, bitter orange, salt. Vinous. The very light peat is tinged with pepper. Strawberry flavor.
    • Finish
Final: Woody, with dried red fruits a little like some teas. It ends smoothly on a small dry note. The peat then takes up more space and sticks to the palate, it is more like a kind of soot.

Very high recognition value. The strawberries leave a lasting impression.
    • Nose
Very ripe, already mushy strawberries. A touch of vanilla pudding. Cinnamon notes. Orange oil. Butterscotch. Tender peat smoke that you do not notice after a while. Still brings complexity. At some point I have sour cherry jam.
    • Taste
At first very gentle, almost watery. Then the alcohol strength is noticeable and I have white pepper on the tongue tip. Oak announces itself. Toffee and fruits can also be felt here. Getting sweeter.
    • Finish
medium. Sweet. The wood is now clearer. Cappuccino. Malty. toffee

    Blindverkostung
    • Nose
In the nose he shows a nice smoke. Not stinging, not phenolic, not with citrus notes as I often have with Ardbeg or Coal ila. Rather an already burned, still hot, non-smoking campfire. After a while the smoke disappears (as always) and a strong malty nite appears. Anyone who has ever smelled of fresh malt knows what he has to imagine. Over time, dark fruits come.
    • Taste
The taste is also the smoke. The compassion is creamy and oily. Then it will be sweet. Very cute. Brown sugar slightly caramelized. The sweet remains but in fruit. The dark fruits are presänter. Plums, raisins and ripe figs. There was definitely a sweetbottle at work.
    • Finish
The finish is not very long but warm and pleasant. The alcohol is never sharp or pungent. The mouth is busy. The sweet remains.

Great malt with age at a fair price. Nice alternative to the countless sherry bottlings
For me personally he does not quite reach the Talisker Port Ruighe.
    • Nose
Pleasant, light smoke (rather the medical variant)
Then sweet strawberries from the tin.
After some time in the glass, the smoke evaporates completely and it leaves a nice Port sweetness behind
    • Taste

intense fermented strawberries, bitter brazil nut, spicy/earthy peat smoke, paint thinner, there is port, which appears to "separate" or on top of the whisky, slightly acidic, maybe clove
    • Taste

    • Finish
short, fruity, acidic, bitterness and again some peat smoke that reminds me of young Highland Park ... there is a berrie note that stays for quite a long in contrast to the "rest", reminds me of "Campino" (candy)

    • Taste
Sweet, creamy and oily. White pepper kicking in, peat smoke coming up. Strawberries all over the place. Mouthwatering. Juicy oranges.
    • Finish

    • Taste
Sweet and fruity, then spicy / peppery with pleasant power, slight dryness. The taste of the smoke is not or only very slightly perceptible.
    • Finish
Sweet and spicy finish. Flows slowly and warmly down the neck.

Thank you, Josh, that he broke his mouth and gave me a sample too. Very nice whisky, perfectly matched smell with taste, 46% already nice, pleased.
    • Nose
One of the few whiskers influenced by the barrel on the port, where I would port and guess. Heavy, overgrown with fruity, almost dull scent, with chocolate and even the smell of smoke or peat, for a moment to the smokehouse. Warm, sweet, spicy, appetizing. (88 b)
    • Taste
Smooth but not faint. A delectable, creamy impression evokes first the sherry barrel, but then a harder conclusion comes, the darker fruity expression (which is one of the attributes of the influence of the barrel on the port), dullness, licorice, tanned wood, peat. (88 b)

    Brambles

Ha, this is my 20th Ardmore. The Ardmore Distillery, near Huntly, was founded by Adam Teacher. The malt is still the heart of the Teacher’s blend. But it is also released as a single malt and the newest to the core range is this Port Wood Finish, that matured for 10 years on bourbon casks and then was allowed to sleep two more years on European half port pipes. That explains the lovely tawny color.

The nose starts on light peat and stable scents, that are quickly joined by very sweet fruit. Think strawberry, rhubarb, brambles and even cherries. Add some raisins and a bit of lime. It also sports a very soft salty note as if from fresh white fish. I quite like this!

The arrival is good. Oily mouth feel and immediately smoky. Loads of spices (mostly pepper), before the fruit kicks in. All of them very sweet, of course. Brambles in the lead. They are joined by apricots and some chocolate. The combination with the peat works very well on the palate.

The finish is fairly long. The smoke clears very slowly, allowing the fruit – that seems to get darker and even candied – the final say.

What a pleasant malt. Wine finishes are often quite tricky, but this one gets it right. Just under 50 EUR. Recommended.

The Port ripening is noticeable above all in the nose and brings the typical fruit flavors that push the smoke into the background. Also in the finish one notices the altogether 12 years maturation. PLV good at 45 €. 85 p.
    • Nose
first citrus fruit, very little smoke, rather a little tar, behind it a lot of strawberry and cranberry, sugared licorice, rotten wood, bark mulch, barbecue sauce, fruit tea, increasingly sweet and woody
    • Taste

So for 12J / smoke / port / 46% are the 45-50 € fair, for the taste the price is OK. Actually nothing to moan, but ... forget it.

My booty scheme: Port + smoke ;-)

Unfortunately, I do not know so many bottlings of Ardmore yet. However, I liked to drink the TC.

The Portwood Finish is a solid whisky with a pleasant smoky note and slightly mossy / moldy impact behind which slumbers a nice portsweet. Still slightly salty and a bit earthy. Dark fruits join in the end.

Medium long, semi-dry finish with some remaining ash and sweetness.
No complexity monster, but no Spritt.

A typical smoke and port nose, pleasant spicy smoke mixed with raspberry and fresh red fruit, citrus notes and mint behind, overall very light and fresh nose, also slightly moulder, slightly maritime, reminds me away to the Talisker Port Ruighe
    • Taste
Straight smoky, sweet portnotes, heavier than in the nose, again very maritime, salty
    • Finish
gourd fruits, musty, light smoke, sour and still salty, medium long

Delicious access to the Ardmore range, but I would have preferred a smokier colleagues.
    • Nose
moist wood, subtle smoke, red fruits, raspberry, wild honey, nutmeg, strawberry, redcurrants
    • Taste
Strawberry jam, blackberry, some oak, some smoke, apricot, dark chocolate, cherries,
    • Finish
The smoke is more prominent and produces a sweet spice

Quite an interesting experiment by Ardmore. Very pleasant. Very enjoyable.

    Concerning price/performance ratio: 9/10
    • Nose
Port, fruits, smoke, red fruits, berrys, blood oranges, lemon, nectarine, overripe cherrys, cinnamon, pepper, hints of vanilla.
    • Taste
Smoke, fruits, bramble, white pepper, berrys.
    • Finish
Medium to long. Smoke and fruits in the mix, dry.

This combination works very well in my opinion. 86/87.
    • Nose
Peach, malt, bramble, dark cherry, chocolate and a fresh saltiness like coquilles Saint-Jacques with lemon and pepper.
    • Taste
Bramble, pepper, apricot, chocolate-coated sugar candy and peat.
    • Finish
There's the peat more strongly, but still plenty of fruit. Mainly that from the port like bramble and dark cherry, but still a little peach as well. Quite mouth-watering, makes me long for more.
