Color
Burnished
Nose

Citrus and malt, lemon meringue and dried figs, baked apples, vanilla and toffee, soft spices (cinnamon and coriander)

Taste

Soft sherry and oak tannins, brown sugar and dry fruits (cherries, raisins, figs, papaya), touch of malt, vanilla and cinnamon

Finish

Light butterscotch, hint of floral honey and anise seed fading to faint rice pudding

Comments

Not a bad whisky on it's own. Some good sherry influence and a solid malt core. The 43% gives it a noticeable boost without any added burn. The age keeps the sherry influence in the whisky, too. So, it's an improvement on the 12 y.o. The price is a bit steep, for me, as there are plenty of other sherry cask matured whiskies that give the same experience at a lower price. I recommend Glenfarclas 15 or 18.

A very interesting balance. I miss the cask strength, because the flavors are reduced fast.

More substantial nose than the 12 year old, this time fresh Apricots and their Flowers. Vanilla and Toffee have come to the party as well. There is a slight vegetal note, could be some Artichoke. The flavour is a lot more settled and balanced. A tad sweeter and the oak has mellowed significantly. On the palatte the Apricots are slightly green, thus a little sour. Adding water brings it closer to the 12 year old. Water makes it younger! Why doesn’t that work with me? Not many changes in flavour. A lighter mouthfeel for sure and a long, drying finnish. It makes me wonder if Balvenies generally don’t swim well?

Nose:- Delicious toffee and caramel, refine and almost too delicate, mellow and mild red apple sweetness with soothing vanilla and faint wood. Smell still delicious, missing the boldness as I would expect and pay for a 17.

Palate:- Good medium weight, soft and tame. Americano and honey mouthfeel, hints of toasted oak at the tail. Easy drinking.

Finish:- Nice one here. Long and smooth, spiciness building up over time, still gentle and gum tickling, drying out. Above average, lacked complexity and authority.
