Whisky Reviews for Balvenie 17-year-old

4 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 84.57 points

  1. Myke scored this whisky 78 points Expert Senior

Interestingly complex on the nose, but the alcoholic sting irritates me - one expects less with a 17 year old whisky with only 43 vol. The taste is very nice, but the finish could be more complex for the 17 years.
    • Nose
      78 78
first an alcoholic sting in the nose. Then honey / caramel sweetness with a pleasant vanilla aroma. Something slightly fruity is present (acidic note in the direction of green apple, pear, unripe orange [after drinking it turns into a nice ripe orange aroma]). A sherry aroma also comes through with raisins and nuts, just like a light spice from the oak.
    • Taste
      82 82
first very soft and sweet, an (oak) wort builds up and remains for a long time. Fruity, this time a ripe orange that remains for a long time. At the back it becomes coffee-dry (goes in the direction of dark chocolate) and dry. The second sip brings some spice again, which is distributed throughout the mouth and becomes oily. A vanilla note also comes through again. [Personally, I'm missing the sherry barrel aroma here, even if a certain raisin note comes through]

medium to long lasting spicy. Slight sweetness of honey and vanilla. Maltiness occurs very late. But somehow it doesn't come to me anymore.

  2. Kaleva scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Very nice single malt, with wonderful nose and light balanced palate. Sherry influence is very subtle but quite obvious. Oak influence a bit too strong as for my taste. Anyway it’s a nice light summer dram, maybe slightly too expensive to be a daily one.
    • Nose
Tender, creamy, slightly sherried with dried apricots and sultanas, a bit of lemon, subtle vanilla, honey, fruit acid drops: pears, oranges. Tangerine notes, some white flowers like bird-cherry blossom, hint of oak
    • Taste
Medium-sweet, gingery, vanilla pie with apples, canned apricots, caramelized orange zest, some oak
    • Finish
Medium-long, slowly getting dry, slightly malty, unripe walnuts, fruit marmalade

This one did the trick, matured and more depth.

  4. Bosi scored this whisky 81 points Specialist

A very well-balanced whisky, whose aromas merge nicely. This type of whisky will never be my personal favorite, but I can acknowledge the quality.
    • Nose
The aroma is dominated by raisins, nuts and dried fruits. Behind it are traces of fruit cake and wine gum.
    • Taste
The taste is slightly dry with oak flavors, liquorice, cocoa, brown sugar and cinnamon.
    • Finish
The finish is medium in length and reveals sherry, allspice and the classic honey sweetness.
