Sparring partner - Balvenie 12 yo, DoubleWood.
Conclusions. A very decent whisky for the base line. In contrast to the 12-year-old, it is much more complex and bright with a good influence of the sherry component. I note that there are relatively few fruits here, which puzzled me a little. Vegetative, woody and spicy motifs are much stronger. At the same time, all three stages of testing are in good agreement and complement each other. Grade 86
    • Nose
Aroma: medium-intense and quite decently saturated. Much brighter than the 12-year-old with a significantly more expressive sherry component, which is more pronounced at the beginning, and then the American oak comes to the fore. Honey sweetness, vanilla, creamy tones, raisins, ripe green apples, sour wine tones, cinnamon pastries, floral perfume motifs, a little wax, freshly sawn wood, fresh grass, traces of anise. In development, despite its considerable age, it becomes more and more fresh. Solid, delicate and well formed with a range of pleasing layers.
    • Taste
Taste: Strong enough for 43% abv, soft onset with a fair amount of sweetness and moderately spicy spices. Over time, the texture becomes silky. Tropical fruits, raisins, creamy caramel, vanilla, honey, cinnamon, sophisticated perfume, relatively soft spicy notes, fresh wood shavings, burnt sugar with a hint of smoke, astringent earthy smell of an alcoholic barrel. At the end of dry oak with a little bitterness. Looks very solid. Well balanced, much richer and deeper than a sparring partner.
    • Finish
Finish: medium length, sweetish-spicy, woody-dry with slight bitterness and astringency, light creamy and wine motifs, burnt notes with a hint of smoke, earthy smell of an alcoholic barrel.
