    The Islay classic with probably the best price-performance ratio ever.
    A true "TOP Malt" - untamed, wild, and therefore he likes me better than some Distillers Edition!
    Lagavulin 16 Years = Islay in a Bottle !!!
    • Nose
      90 90
      intense smoke, tar, ash, iodine, salt, sweet sherry aromas;
    • Taste
      90 90
      powerful spicy onset, ashen smoke, lots of sherry, salty, oily, spicy oak on the palate, round, complex;
    • Finish
      89 89
      long and smoky, oak, salt, smoke echo forever;

    It is interesting to see the difference between this and the recent batches, this one got some old-style DNA inside (like the 1985 vintage)
    • Nose
      More mineral compared to the modern batch, less sherry influence, strong peat and medicinal noses
    • Taste
      Intense peat, leather and smoke, some fruity notes but not dominant as more recent batches.
    • Finish
      Short-medium, pencil peel, sweet dates, leather and shoe polish

    I feel it has lost something even in the last five years or so, but it's still quite a malt.
    • Nose
      Cigar leaves, ashes, tar, and oak. Nosed next to a White Horse Lagavulin, this one carries certain surprising similarities to the contemporary 12yo. Peat, plaster and herbal tea. The nose unfortunately feels very 43%, you know what I mean: complex yet damped by dilution. Still, it's unusual and appealing for a contemporary malt. Marker pens, iodine, and pine.
    • Taste
      The body is too watery and too easy, but the taste is still marvelous. Not so much sooty or upfront peaty punch like neighbours L and A, but rather a complex, elegant marriage of faint ideas of sherry, some oak, and boat tar. Still, it feels quite simple next to a White Horse.
    • Finish
      Short. Some ash and disinfectant. Could really use some more oomph.

    A delicious full peaty / smoky whisky. Not "overdone" but nice to get used to this taste. To warm up in the hand for a while, the taste certainly benefits. A must for the whisky drinker who is not yet familiar with the Islay whiskys.
