I put this on my wish list but after 4 or 5 messages saying one is available on the market place I will remove it. This was £145 on release , unfortunately it is a sad reflection of the times when the only reason people entered the ballot to get a bottle was to sell them on, the fact is people who did want to try it were denied that opportunity.
How come some people managed to be lucky enough to get two or three in a ballot, to people who were unsuccessful that must be a real choker?

This should not have been bottled.

I really wanted to try this and compare this with the usual bourbon offerings.
As far as I am aware this will be the only sherried offering planned by Daftmill.
The distillate is masked the sherry is too heavy for the profile of the distillate to break through and shine like is does in a bourbon cask.
Still a decent dram but I think Daftmill are right to concentrate on bourbon cask bottlings.
    • Nose
      86 86
Heavy sherry, dark fruits, dark fruit cake, dates, soy sauce, a little plum sauce, dark toffee and possibly some sulphur, certainly burnt matches on the nose.
    • Taste
      83 83
Very rich, thick, slightly gloopy and quite similar to some old Glen Grant first fill sherry of great age.
There is some bitterness and plenty of wood, again the sort of thing you get with much older sherried whisky.
Dates, spices a plenty, treacle toffee, ginger cakes, plain chocolate, blueberry, blackberry
    • Finish
      83 83
Remaining spicy and slightly tart with fizziness,

      With water:-
More fruit is released, the palate seems to be even more sherried than before.

This is one of the few times where a separate score for the nose and taste might've made sense. There's just such a big discrepancy between the two.
    • Nose
As the color suggests, this is intense. Earthy and rich. Hints of soy sauce and maggi, with dark chocolate, raisins, as well as dates and dark molasses. Touches of espresso, yet not bitter. There's a whiff of strawberries too, as well as sweet candy canes. This seems to deliver!
    • Taste
Okay, maybe I was a bit too quick to judge. The cask has completely overtaken the spirit. Lots of espresso bitterness, as well as big notes of cloves, burnt oak, black peppercorns and dry and nutty flavours. Even a tinge of fruitiness would've made a big difference, but it's just not there. How about a splash of water then? Nah, that doesn't do much at all.
    • Finish
Bone dry with more of the above, as well as a touch of cocoa powder. Long.

  5. ARDBERG scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Quite an influence of the sherry, though not as tannic and dry as I expected. Maybe a bit beyond it peak - likely a year or two ago. It is no "woodworm" as the influence of sherry and wood are there but not overpowering.
First impression on the nose was the 1979s Bunnahabhains from Signatory in dumpy bottles. Then develops towards a better Glendronach than Glendronach can do. And Daftmill still comes through.

    Personally I wouldn't pay £145 for a 12 year old whisky never mind £600+
Daftmill? More like Daft----s. I will let you guess that one.

I'm a huge daftmill fan but for me this just doesnt work. Beautiful sherry monster nose, but on the palate i'm struggling to identify any distillery character at all. Stick to bourbon casks please where the spirit sings and shines :)

Huh. A bottle of this blue chip was sold on whiskyauctioneer yesterday for 2.100 GBP.

  9. Baanaanaabob scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Sherry bomb, oatmeal, apple, cider, citrus, tannins, oak, sweet spices, not bad but lacks balance, the sherry is really overpowering
