Honey, floral, slight lavender, marzipan, sultanas and vanilla. Resinous and waxy in the mouth with orchard fruit, apricot and some citrus. Peppery spice builds up towards the finish; pretty great.

The aroma was fruity and beachy with mango and beach flowers in the cool morning sun. A salty maritime breeze brought brine, wispy smoke, orange flowers, driftwood, sea shells, and pink peppercorns. Medium-bodied on the palate, the whisky was surprisingly creamy with a soft brine, orange blossom, plumeria, passion fruit, wispy smoke, pepper, and sun bleached driftwood. The finish was long and waxy with a gentle brine, dried mango and pineapple slices, and beach flowers.
The price of this Bowmore was not cheap, something around $50 for a dram, but the promise of an intensely tropical Bowmore that cast shadows of the 1960s… how could I possibly say no? Perhaps my palate was already deader than I had realized, I never got this whisky to really pop for me in the way I expected. It was always rather quiet, shy, and more austere than I expected. I still enjoyed it quite a bit, but maybe on another evening it would have reached another level. Perhaps someday I will get a chance to retry it! If not, there is plenty more Bowmore out there.

About what I've come to expect from these vintages.

A savoury, almost brothy peat smoke. Don’t know if that’s a thing, but it is now. That’s then accompanied by hints of spruce, crushed mint leaves and charcoal with a mellow brininess. Gentle notes of ripe lemons appear, accompanied by a touch of crème caramel and hay-like elements.

Modern Ardmore the way it should be. An oily texture with hints of plaster, tobacco and a mellow peatiness. There are highlights of charcoal, grilled lemons and gentle herbs. A good pinch of white pepper too, as well as green walnuts and even some (very) light tropical elements.

Long with gentle smoke, a touch of char and some pepper. Quite minty too.
This vintage has a reputation, and for good reason.

Fruit salad, are you there? Well, you sure are. We’re transported to some of those late 1980s and early 1990s undisclosed Irish single malts. Except with more of a mineral edge. There’s mango, guava, passion fruit and the likes. A fantastic fatty waxiness also with just a sliver of furniture polish.

A proper waxy mouthfeel. And Christ, I thought the nose was expressive. Mango, tinned pineapple, tangerines and a delicate herbaciousness. Laced with mineral notes as well – think lime, wet pebbles and slate. Just a pinch of white pepper, like a tiny one, with some light camphor.

Long. The oak now more noticeable, but the fruit never completely disappears.
This reads older than its stated age and is likely bottled at just the right time.

Sweet, fruity and lively. Hints of beeswax – almost honeyed – but with a delicate chalkiness. Soft notes of ripe bananas, some gentle hazelnuts, and friendly fruits. Think tinned peaches, grapes and nectarines.

Pleasant creamy texture. Slivers of ginger, some custard, delicate notes of sandalwood and with a drizzle of that honey-esque sweetness. There’s a touch of crushed mint leaves lingering, but also bright citrus fruits and green apples.

A tad dry but with ripe fruits also.

Mikan, Tangerines, Apricot, Peach, pinch of Salt, Chalk, Seabreeze, Maritime notes, Iodine, and getting more Tropical on the palate, such as Oranges, Mangoes, Pineapple, more Mikan & Citrusy take turn to appear, accompanied by chalk and other coastal elements
Big, BIG single malt.

A fun kind of lactic note initially, quickly followed by a minor sulphur note, as well as a hint of sauerkraut, which I find a classic Ledaig tell. Then smouldering embers, charred beef and tar followed by coastal notes – mostly sea spray – and olive brine.

The most intense example of sweet peat. The (presumably ex-sherry) butt has left its imprint, but there’s slight medicinal note too, as well minerals, pine resin and prosciutto. A good bit of green peppercorns too, with finally ashes and a soft rubber-y element.

Long. A lovely salinity, plenty of tar and nice kind of umami and/or beefiness.
