About RamiW:

My career went: chemistry -> neuroscience -> entrepeneurship -> clinical research -> software development. I think I'll stick with that last one.

Other than that, I deeply cherish a variety of hobbies, with music (mostly -metal- guitar, ex-piano, some drums) at the forefront, followed by trying to outcook any restaurant in the area, writing some software for myself, learning Japanese and of course drinking the good stuff. Bangin' the drams, if you will.

I like cats too.

I'll use this space for tasting notes that I cannot place elsewhere on Whiskybase:

Glengoyne - Self blended distillery exclusive

This was a dram from a 200ml bottle acquired at the Glengoyne malt master workshop, meaning it’s a unique blend of single cask malts and therefore impossible to add to WB as an expression. Everyone partaking in the workshop will end up with their own blend, from whatever casks were at hand at the time. This blend consists of 4 different cask samples:

- 25% is from a refill bourbon hogshead, 14YO, vintage 2010, 59,3% ABV (Cask no. 1463)

- 25% is from a 1st fill American Oak bourbon barrel, 20YO, vintage 2004, 49,6% ABV (Cask no. 3597)

- 35% is from a 1st fill American Oak sherry puncheon, 13YO, vintage 2011, 59,1% ABV (Cask no. 1723)

- 15% is from a 1st fill European Oak sherry puncheon, 13YO, vintage 2011, 59,4% ABV (Cask no. 1690)

Which means the blend would be bottled as a 13YO Glengoyne single malt with 56,8% ABV.

All the cask samples tasted before were excellent and I would score them each high if I were to review them. What I was going for with this blend was a 50% bourbon barrel base to add some more dominant sherried notes to. Both bourbon cask expressions had their own profile, with the first one being more fresh fruity, and the second one with creamy coconut notes. The third cask was a very deep sherried whisky with bitter chocolate and coffee notes, while the sweetness and spices were relatively restrained. I chose this one as the major ingredient as I liked the coffee and chocolate were excellent with the bourbon cask base. To round off the profile I filled up the rest with the first sample from a European Oak cask to end up in the final blend, for a little bit of spice and dried fruits.

Needless to say, I liked the end result, but then again it was tailored to my exact liking. The £100,- price tag for the workshop is significant for the 200ml bottle you end up with. But given there’s a tour included, an introductory dram, and nearly unlimited sampling from excellent cask samples during the workshop, I’d say it’s very much worth the experience. Also needless to say, I was quite far from sober when exiting the blender’s room.
