Conclusions. A very decent Glenfiddich. I expected the worst based on the regular 12-year-old from the “Our Original Twelve” series tested last year. She didn't impress me at all. In fact, the Special Edition of the “Our Signature” series looks much more solid and interesting. This release is brighter in both aroma and taste, combined with a pleasant aftertaste. Either the barrels here are better than usual, or they didn’t spare the old spirits. Or maybe both together. If the aroma were consistently intense, then the Special Edition could be raised to a fairly good level without reservation. And in such a presentation, I am ready to evaluate this whisky only in a truncated version, taking into account only the stage of aroma that appears under the cap. With a standard approach, the level would be significantly lower. Score 82
    • Nose
Aroma: variable intensity from medium (under the cap) to weak (without it). So you can only enjoy it for a short time, and then it becomes quite faded. Immediately bright sweet fruits (apples, pears, raisins) and citrus fruits combined with hints of honey, vanilla, creamy caramel and malt. The development of slight strength includes vegetal, floral and woody notes with a slightly tart smell of fresh sawdust. In the absence of a cap, only herbal, woody and mineral notes remain from the whole variety. Soft, light, pleasant, well integrated. Sherry casks have noticeably less influence here.
    • Taste
Taste: soft, well loaded, moderately energetic. At first, the pharynx is prominent; closer to swallowing, the profile blurs. Quite sweet with moderately hot spices. The fruits are not very distinct (something like apples and pears boiled in syrup combined with citrus zest). They are complemented by vanilla, creamy, honey, caramel and spicy tones. The development is mostly burnt sugar, herbal notes, tannins and moderately dry oak. Compared to the aroma, it is more attractive due to the constancy of its power, even being poorer in intensity. Delicate and smooth. A good demonstrator of the high quality of Glenfiddich distillate.
    • Finish
Finish: between short and medium, sweetish-spicy, vanilla, some cooked fruit, soft herbal and woody notes, moderately dry in the end. Quite pleasant.
