    Talkingblends Review No. 9

Dewar’s 18 yo, Double Aged, Blended Scotch

Bought it on an auction, nicely priced. The “double aged” addition refers to the marrying period of different components. The blend is put together from Highland, Speyside and Lowland Single Malts and grains, all at least 18 years of age. To mentions some distilleries; Aberfeldy, Macduff, Royal Brackla, Craigellachie and Aultmore.
Nose; black tea, sherry notes, almond, old apples, earthy notes. Also a thinness there.

Taste; modest and warm, a bit thin arrival, tea, underlying sweetness and creaminess, marzipan/almonds, very light peppery tinkle.

Finish; a velvetty, creamy, herbal coating stays behind with a thin bitter note.

A smooth, accessible pleasant dram. With 40% it misses some punch but it delivers what it promises; a smooth, creamy dram with marzipan/almond notes. It is made to serve a large audience and will satisfy a lot of people but will not be the most memorable dram of the evening. The dram lacks distinctiveness in its notes and features. For me it leans a bit too much to a generic blend and lacks an outspoken character.

We cannot blame a blend for being a blend although I think a blend can offer more, also and especially to whisky afficionados.
