0131-BENRIACH BIRNIE MOSS INTENSELY PEATED SINGLE MALT SCOTCH Whisky 48% (NAS).
... It's young, fresh, then changes to peaty, burning, warm, only to change again after adding water, soften, and finally show its claws.
Overall, it's not bad; you can have it on its own with a sip, but it's better with water. A bit harsh, as if not "bitten" enough, in my opinion, but maybe that's how it's supposed to be.
    • Nose
...the first moment is quite pleasant, even sweet, vanilla, roasted apples, mint, a bit alcoholic, quite refreshing... it would seem idyllic. The only thing missing is sunshine, a beach, and relaxing music. Nothing to be deceived about. Because these "pleasures" are only "from above" the glass, because beneath them lurk other, quite opposing aromas – something burnt, the stench of a smoldering fire soaked in water, mustiness, cellar aromas, something I describe as "wet fur," fog from a peat bog, a slightly "woody" note, the distillate piercing the nostrils a bit.
    • Taste
....at first sweet and smooth, only to explode with a peppery-herbal power that's quite "biting." Fortunately, this fades relatively quickly, leaving a sweet, peaty smoke with a citrus tinge. The second sip - it tastes like eye drops, more herbs, a touch of saltiness, and lacks the oiliness I prefer; it's rather raw and rough. A few drops of water - a bit milder, more fruity, the sweet peat has become stronger, intensified, and is present throughout the mouth, a bit like a pine-spike tincture, but the whole thing isn't "smooth." Still rough and citrusy.
    • Finish
...rough, sweet with peaty undertones, warming with spice, savoury and herbal notes. And it lasts.
