  1. Thermidor scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Tasted twice: the first time blind, the second time with Malts of Scotland Port Ellen 1983 cask 11011 (91 pts.).

The cask must have been extremely worn since there's very little oak for a 26yo and the profile is distillate-forward, simple, and although by no means bad (86 is a solid score), to me somewhat disappointing for a Port Ellen. Forgetting that it's a PE and concentrating only on the quality of the liquid, I would not pay more than 100€ for a bottle of this.
    • Nose
An oily peatiness that's quite unusual. Probably not a Caol Ila or a Laphroaig. A truly elemental whisky with barely any oak and mostly just this salty, sooty, oily distillate with a bit of rubber from the peat and some farminess, but that's all folks. Water helps with the sharpness but doesn't change the profile otherwise.
    • Taste
The most noticeable thing is the oily texture it leaves on your lips and tongue. I like that a lot but otherwise there's just soot, disinfectant, a smidgen of soft oak, and faint seashore aromas. Could really have used a more active cask, and might actually have become quite good that way.
    • Finish
An oily, sooty taste lingers on my tongue. A solid whisky, but you'll easily find a better Port Ellen.
