Carried by ancient leather impressions and an intense, characteristic smokiness, which is, however, marked by incredible finesse (no phenolic smokiness that one is used to from many Islay representatives, more in the direction of extinguished and cooled campfire and charcoal, but just as impressive, only much more delicate). Old coal cellar, incredibly metallic (significantly more so than in the following decades!), old "bulldog shed" and impressions of a workshop with stale engine oil containers, old cobbler's shop (leather and shoe glue). "Old" can actually be put before all aromatic components. Over time, an elegant waxiness, subtle heather tones and a wonderful breeze of cool Atlantic air as well as local fruit impressions that slowly emerge (overripe yellow apples, gooseberries, green grapes) and green malt notes. In the background, there are always nuances of musty highland moor on a cold day (visitors to Scotland know what I mean) and a fine salty breeze. Really characteristic. Completely different from the following decades. The taste suggests the same aromatic structure that the nose already shows, but as mentioned, it falls off significantly due to the loss of alcohol strength and seems somehow "watered down" and weak in substance compared to expectations....

Sprinbank tasting, old vintage, old in years or a combination of both.
The only thing missing from this was the Springbank 12 year Samaroli a 1966 Local Barley dumpy bottle and a 30 year dumpy bottle, I know all 3 are excellent, but still a lot to go at.

This is a really fragile but holds it together well, what you are paying for is the age and the vintage, it certainly does not blow your socks off.
The colour is really light, similar to white wine.
    Bottle with good fill level.

    Nose
Full of pineapple, grapefruit and honey at first, then a cereal note and a little lemon.
    Faint marzipan
    Palate
Quite sweet, and fragile is my first thought. The honey and grapefruit that the palate hinted at are there so is the cereal note.
This tastes younger than 50 years, quite a bit in fact. It gets creamy and some nice spice comes in and the profile is quite simple.
    Finish
Not that long to be honest, with some icing sugar sweetness with the gentle spice note remaining.
