Glenrothes an unloved distillery. A range with vintage whiskys reduced to 43% for the most part which are generally difficult to convince. Today I am breaking the standards of this distillery with a young cask strength sherry bomb without the addition of caramel from a Scottish bottler that I really like: Adelphi.

Nose: plum, prunes, nuts, encaustic notes (glue, varnish) cedar wood, pine, pine resin, grilled corn, caramel then some notes of candied black cherries. Powerful and intense nose that reminds me of glendronach single cask that I particularly appreciate

On the palate the attack is powerful but I was expecting something more naughty. I was surprised by the level of gluttony oloroso? Only 8 years old with 67% and yet it's super well done. Currants, prunes, wood, candied cherries, bitter chocolate. Adding water does not work for him, he does not swim very well. Chocolatey, woody, encaustic finish on cleopatra glue and heat ???? alcohol. Persistence on wood and spices.

When you come across this kind of product, it makes you think about the value for money of the whiskys on offer today.

Nose: sherry, notes of almond, notes of wine, light dryness, also raisins
Taste: sherry with wine elements with almond oil and honey. Without fate, he sprinkles water terribly on samku.
Rating: 88 | 100 - The medium-long finish of this item is filled with quite strong notes of sherry.

The alcohol is present but not particularly pungent in the nose. At first it reminds me of a strong rum, with associations of petroleum and wood polish. Then dark dried fruits and a light nuttiness come into play.

In the mouth, the alcohol literally burns sweet-spicy chocolate and polish notes into the palate, which are underlined in the finish by a nice nuttiness and dried fruits.
    Length: 6/10

Nice, intense and sherry-heavy youngster, who integrates his brute alcohol content well, only the solvent notes bother me a bit.

    Grade: 2+

    • Nose
      Again as a blind sample.

      Colour:
      Red-brown

      Nose:
Sweet leather and dark cherries. Head towards the cherry liqueur. Roasted malt and pipe tobacco smoke. Apricot jelly, cold filter coffee, rusted iron, dried blood, blackberries. A good dose of dirt. Soup stock cubes.
With a little time in the glass, more tobacco comes. Plus lovage and beads of sweat when paving asphalt.
      Great nose !!
    • Taste
Powerful start. Chewing tobacco, curled liquid chocolate. Dark cherries, warm plum cake with yeast dough and streusel on it. Oranges and cinnamon also join.
    • Finish
Long. With tobacco, leather and a charred fruit aroma.

My tip was 12 years. First fill sherry with approx. 59%. Possibly Bunnahabhain.

    Blind sample.

My guess was a 13yr Glendronach single cask Oloroso, 58%. 67%! Good lord. No you really can’t ask for more out of a modern 8 year sherry bomb. Very cool.

Dark chocolate, chili, chocolate covered coffee beans, tobacco, leather, drying sherry, slightly nutty, dried blueberries even, but also a lot of prickly spice, youthful, thin. I like it!

    • Nose
Strong, dark sherry. Has something dirty. Oh yeah baby ... Sweet licorice. Followed by juicy raisins. Dark, pickled cherries. Plum jam. A nice blow leather. He smells spicy, but in return also sweet-ripe. A great smell of tobacco rises from the glass. The alcohol is there, but not superficial. He just coolly cools his nose. With some time in the glass, comes gingerbread spice and spicy honey. Chocolate and slightly nutty. This is how a liquid Hanuta could smell. In the background, subtle citrus notes.
    • Taste
Strong start. The skin you the full sherry load nicely in the face. My dear slider. The plum jam is there, but well seasoned with pepper. The alcohol is now powerfully noticeable. Tilt in water. Aha. The start will be "gentler". Berries are coming now and licorice. A delicious honey load creamy covers the mouth. The wort goes a long way back with water. The second sip, the herbs and tobacco side comes through more. But also the great chocolate. A leather taste stays behind in the mouth.
    • Finish
Long and warm. Slightly bitter espresso with chocolate and some citrus notes. But an incredibly creamy mouthfeel.

    sample.

For Sherry fans who like a good punch to the face. The only thing that's left of the spirit is the bite (youth) and nothing else really.
    • Nose
Ah yes freshly sawn wood and glue. Tons of dried fruit. Very winey. New furniture. A little on tropical fruit. Cherry, some Marzipan, Pepper. In fact the peppery sweet notes remind me of Bourbons. Rum raisins.
    • Taste
Strong Chocolate notes, with some cherry and brandy. This is not as agressive as i have expected. Quite soft and rounded (for an 8yo). Cloying sweet though. Water tones it down a bit but it also brings out the bitterness. Even more chocolaty now with a little bit of tobacco.
    • Finish
Quite short but powerful. Dusty with a little bit of tobacco and plums.

Yep, this is what you call a sherry bomb. This doesn’t need much time to open up as the aromas seem to want to jump right out of the glass. Yes it’s very intense but hugely enjoyable to nose and taste. For such a young and intense dram the layering of flavours is simply superb. Be careful with adding water as I found that it quickly becomes very, no extremely dry on the palate.
Yes baby, pour me another one!
    • Nose
A powerful, rich, fresh, intense powerhouse whisky with aromas of rich sherry, green apple, toffee, caramel, treacle, pear, lemon, orange, tobacco, mint, milk chocolate, earthy tones, subtle smoke (charred oak?), dried fruits (cherries, plum, apricots, figs), spices (ginger, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, black pepper), grapes, subtle sulphur, vanilla, dark honey, grape seeds, licorice root, coconut, copper and spicy oak.
    • Taste
An intense, powerful, rich and spicy whisky with aromas of chili, lush sherry, tannins, big hit of oak, mahogany, rosewood, sandalwood, hot ginger, allspice, black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, dried fruits (dates, figs, plums, cherries, raisins), charred oak, hint of sulphur, treacle, bitter walnut, spearmint, earthy tones, moss, rotting leaves, grapefruit, lime zest, vanilla, dark honey, burned caramel and spicy (intense) oak.
    • Finish
A very long, hot and dry finish with aromas of wood, wood, wood, tannins, burned caramel, brown sugar, treacle, dried fruits, spices, cocoa powder and more oak.

Not so much the 67% because here is a lot of extract. :)
    Great job Glenrothes and Adelphi.
    • Nose
Big sherry, plum, berries, raisin, caramel
    • Taste
Sweet, strong, oily: mixed fruit jams, caramel, then comes a bitter woody, oaky flavors
    • Finish
Long, but the sweetness and the bitter tannins replaced.
For this reason, it is the weakest part of the whisky I think.

    WITH WATER

Nose - Restrained now and still sweet

Palate - Smoother now but no change taste wise

Finish - Long and sweet with a creamy tail

A vibrant young sherry monster, too much at 67% for me and a little water is needed, fun to try for sure.
    • Nose
Massive sherry, prune, fig, blackberry, mixed fruit jams.
    • Taste
Very sweet, Jesus my tongues fallen off,, raspberry Jam, lamb gravy with redcurrant.
    • Finish
      Long & sweet

Very good for it's age but not the most impressive of these Glenrothes+Adelphi youngsters.
    • Nose
Heavy sherry cask aromas with raisins, prunes, dates, milk chocolate and toffee. Alcohol shows too, but at this strength it's acceptable for me. Very intense and condensed.
    • Taste
Dense, oily, meaty, with strawberry marmelade, tons of toffee and nuts. Initially sweet and very likeable, gets bitter and dry towards the finish.
    • Finish
The weekest part of the whisky, quite dry with the tannins and a bit of fruitiness playing the major role.

Nose: Quite pretty nose, if you like sherry boards. Molasses, dates, oranges, mint, undergrowth, fine oak. Mid-low and a bit superficial.

Mouth: Fat, powerful, superficial and very sweet - and clearly alcoholic hot behind. Pretty brute. Typical fruity sherry aromas (dates, figs, raisins). Dark chocolate.

Finish: cocoa, dates, neat cocoa, slightly spicy, but better balanced (less sticky) than in the mouth.

Conclusion: a typical, fat, young (good) sherry board, which probably polarized. To me clearly too fat and too little balanced (sweetness-acid).
Water makes him a bit more balanced, but he loses volume significantly. Error-free barrel. But 140.- € for an eight-year old?!?! Are you crazy ?

    Glenrothes 2007-2015, 8 years, 67% alc.
    Bottler: Adelphi
    Removal: sherry barrel no. 3531
Region: Speyside, Scotland Nose: Alcoholic, clear in strength. The nose gets used to it quickly. Behind them raisins, rum balls and strong cigar tobacco come to light. Add some furniture polish, dark chocolate and dried berries. In the background is a bit of filter coffee.

Palate: Dark berries, maple syrup, sugar molasses and raisins. In addition a lot of oak, but without looking really bitter. Espresso beans, salmiak and deep-dark men's chocolate.

Finish: Very long, very sweet, with cedar wood, sultanas and dried oranges. Besides some cocoa.

    Conclusion: wonderful part!
    92/100 points (tasted 2015, ca. 140 €)
