Nose: really profound, big yet elegant sherry. Prunes, dates, lots of cherries and raspberries. Toasted nuts and cinnamon. A big fruitiness covered with layers of turpentine, camphor and varnished oak. Chocolate and Balsamico. Mouth: big and powerful again. There’s still a fruity side (plum jam, blackcurrants, some exotic hints like baked banana) but also a dry and slightly bitter side. Dark chocolate with fleur de sel, cocoa powder and cloves. Pepper and liquorice roots. Very intense. Finish: long, slightly tannic, with coffee powder, cassis and tobacco.

Quite excellent, just like its sister cask. Slightly engineered and very overpowering but highly attractive. Around € 150. Still available from LMdW, although it’s unclear whether it’s actually the same cask.

Score: 90/100

Color
Brown sherry

Pure: very deep PX sherry like notes, balsamico, dark warm fruit, rich, musty, slightly sweet (diluted: more clear sherry notes, dried fruit (tutti fruti), citrusfruit (oranges) and some estery notes)

Taste

Dry, sherry, fruity, Tobacco, spicy (diluted: mild, still fruity (plum), balsamico!, still powerful)

Finish

Warm, strong (alcohol). Once reduced: still warm, mild, woodspices (cloves), dry)

Comments

The secret is time! This is a mouthfull of dark sherry, quite nice if you fancy sherry styled whisky's. Overall it's not fully balanced, once reduced the whisky looses its balance. A good sherry whisky stands tall with a touch of water. Therefore I give this one 82 points, because of the flavor impact and what it does to you.

My god, this is some heavy stuff. Extreme sherry aromas. We've got soy, a sort of cherry syrup, an assortment of red fruits, raspberries and plumbs. There is a hint of mint, followed by paint thinner and varnish. Also dark chocolate and a barely noticeable saltiness.

Taste

Some fruit again with blackberries and plumbs. There something nutty here, and again a saltiness. The palate has a slight dryness. There is also the darker, heavier sherry with dark chocolate, cloves and coffeepowder. It is very accessible and water really isn't needed.

Finish

Slightly bitter with tobacco leaves and cocoa.

Comments

This is one hell of a sherry monster. It is enjoyable, very good. But something extreme like this will have a very hard time scoring 90+ with me. The stuff I find really good, or great even, tends to be a bit more subtle.
