Lowland whiskies tend to be overlooked by many whisky drinkers. That's a shame! Being a rather light, soft and floral Single Malt, Glenkinchie 12 has a surprising complexity. The nose is mildly grainy and fruity with honey, nuts and caramel. It's a busy nose that needs a bit of time to open up. On the palate, the dram arrives full-bodied with ripe fruits, pepper and a malty spiciness. It turns slightly dry and there is an occasional spiritiness coming through. The finish is fresh and aromatic but rather short. An easily accessible malt with a remarkable character!

Nose

You may call this a floral nose. Quite some grasses and flowers and pretty grainy too. Only after a few moments do I get some toffee, honey and some pears. Lime creeps in slowly. Some vanilla and nuts. But not much else and to be honest: this is a very mediocre and not very interesting nose.

Taste

The body is fine, but the taste is again quite middle of the road, just like the nose. Some sweet grains (you can actually taste the barley), pear, some citrus fruit and loads of oak. It also reminds me a bit of crème brûlée, but not made by the best chef. It even becomes a tad bitter towards the end.

Finish

In the finish – which is not overly long – I get some spices, wood and a salty hint.

Comments

Well, I guess that explains why it had been such a long time since I went back to this. Note to self: feel free to wait longer than 8 years before pouring this again.

Nose

Mild und blumig. Ja, sehr floral! Zitronenschale und unreife Orange. Etwas Malz.

Taste

Etwas alkoholisch und wenig aromatisch. Leicht bitter und fruchtig.

Finish

Mittellang und eher schwach.

Comments

Sehr angenehme, florale Nase. Der Gaumen ist weniger gut.

Nose

Прохладный, легкий, солодово-цветочный с лёгкими минеральными и сливочными нотками, немного лимона и карамели на заднем плане, сырое зерно и мокрое дерево, ореховые тона.

Taste
Перец и лимонад, сливки, топлёное молоко, лёгкие дубовые нотки, растительное масло, зелень, немного киви и каких-то ещё тропических фруктов, для такой крепости весьма насыщенно и плотно.

Finish

Мягко-перечное, сливочное, компот из кислых фруктов, шкурка апельсина, лёгкая дубовая горчинка, щавель, кислое яблоко, лимон.

Comments

Очень и очень неплохо для базового молта, легко, свежо, хорошо сбалансировано, недостатка крепости не ощущается, питкость отличная.

BLIND:

  • N: Oily, buttery, doughy sweet decay - Mortlach-like? Nice strength with good age, probably from a good use of refills. Notes of fried onions and sweetcorn. Tomatin?
  • T: Straight-ahead with a touch of Mortlach-like interest. Age & youth combined.
  • F: No surprises but true to form with a super-tempered heat that is hidden/blended well. A decent sweetish-sour finish with some sherry showing at the death.
  • C: Revealed. I really liked this last time. Currently a ‘go to’ in bars given how fast age statement malts are disappearing.

Nose

Honey, milk caramel, citrus and lots of pineapple.

Taste

Sharp, dry, bitter, lemon, opposite to what you are nosing.

Finish

Short and soft.

Comments

Really boring in my opinion. Lacks character. I like on the nose but the taste goes on his own way. Give it time.

  • N: A rough ’n’ ready Speysider that pairs well with its companion today - Cardhu 12 WB.
  • T: A lovely integration of sweet & leathery, waxy & creamy lemon maltiness.
  • F: Dryish Spey-style finish.
  • C: Glenkinchie isn't a whisky I've seen much of, so its good to see both it & Cardhu (the majority of which goes to Spain & France), both with age statements, reasonably priced and widely available in pubs & bars in the UK.
