Both elegant and vigorous, immense pleasure every step of the way and every time you return to the glass. Unheard of.
    • Nose
Intense nose and concentrated on leather, nuts and toasted almonds, a beautiful essence of pine appears. A splash of ripe fruit: mango, guava and apricot followed by a small caress of papaya and plum. Honey and wax in addition to aeration. A meaty hint like a sherry Mortlach. Creamy and melted peat.
    • Taste
Explosive palate on tropical fruits with mango and banana as a guideline. The apricot is also very present. Diluted chocolate milk. Peat present but perfectly melted in each flavor.
    • Finish
Always on mango, leather, chocolate, caramel, vanilla crème brûlée.

Sherry, fregrant, half dried glasses, ginger

Become old springbank taste, a bit oxidized

    Hope better afterwards.

Significantly better after 20mins and some drops of water, zesty and waxy.
A bit dark coffee after taste an a zesty honey water.

After revisiting my sample I upped my score from 92 to light 93, I must admit that the old-school waxy creaminess is absolutely splendid and that the fruitiness is very beautiful as well, but speaking about fruits, I still don't find it half as fruity as many reviewers here, that describe it as a real fruit debauchery. Truly excellent malt nonetheless, tasted in a comparative tasting of four official Springbank 21yo and this one's profile is clearly something you do not find in recent bottlings, although most of the recent bottlings are also of very high quality - just different.

    Colour:
    Old gold
    Nose:
A spicy fruit board: apricots, peaches, mango, papaya, banana and tons of leather. In addition cereal aromas, vanilla, some fruit gum, candle wax, wood and unfortunately a slightly acidic undertone that develops late - but still good overall.
    Taste:
Thick, creamy, spicy and fruity. Old sherry, tropical fruit, fine wood, pepper, nutmeg, turmeric, a fine honey note and becoming increasingly intense and fresh towards the finish. The last part here is very pleasantly wood, fresh and tart.
    Finish:
Long - fruity, tart and fresh. The wort declines sharply and clears the way for the oak wood, which is still well integrated and has a pleasant freshness - unfortunately nothing else happens here.

Nose: Mango, Nectarines, bananas, oranges or orange jam. A flow of exotic fruits. Hints of smoke lingering in the background. Dried fruits like figs. Hints of chocolate. Toffee and honey sweetness. My grandma’s old leather bag. Hints of newly waxed or polished wood. The casks are speaking loud here, but the spirit still has a voice in the chorus.
Taste: An explosion. Crisp notes of exotic fruits. Oranges and candied orange peels. Crème Brule vanilla and burnt sugar crust. Dark chocolate. Hint of licorice. Herbs I can’t define precisely. Very waxy and mouth coating. Tastes truly antiquated and that is meant highly positive.Finish: Mokka and chocolate. The Crème Brule notes stays on. Hints of cigars. Lingering oak.
I know it is subjective. But this one has about the crispiest flawless oak notes that I have ever encountered in a whisky.

     Final coment: WOW!

Quite amazing I admit, even if I might have expected even more. The nose is incredible and triggers some memories no other malt had so far. The rest is top notch as well, though less flabbergasting.
    • Nose
A citrusy fruitiness first, extremely creamy and intense, with mandarines, bitter oranges, a touch of mango then a suprising evolution with flashes of leather, old wax, new plastic, my grandma's gnocchi al pomodoro (a true memory-malt !), ... I'm really impressed ! The fruitiness lingers, it's getting sweeter and less citrusy with time : pink grapes, pomgrenate, wowee ! A few minutes later it's going on the savoury side of things with Serrano ham, still that leathery touch, still oranges and a French sauce typically served with fish that we call beurre blanc. It's getting more and more resinous and old school. Glorious. Fruity pana cotta. A very, very high-class nose : complex, yet precise and very approachable.
    • Taste
It might be less complex and precise but it's still quite incredible in its bitter-fruity delivery. The first sip was quite discrete but the rest was really great and very direct : passion fruit, still quite old-school and waxy, it's just a bit more woody (within limits) now, rather on citrus skins, blood oranges, old style soap and pinesap, mint. Wow again, a treat.
    • Finish
Very long for only 46%, and texture wise it's very peculiar as well, it feels like something glossy, like a varnish. There's not an ounce of dryness indeed. Flavour-wise, it's pretty much the same - which we clearly won't complain about.

  28. DenisLeonov scored this whisky 95 points Connoisseur

Yes, there's not enough priderzheshsya (24) I remember the aftertaste after "The Tale of the Three" ... it's very vivid / bright / tasty and at the same time it does not require any effort. It's just a buzz :) every page (sip) raises the mood.95
    • Nose
Tropics ... leather ... citrus (mandarin) ... plum jam (lekvar ... there is a difference) ... spices tickle in the nose ... the aroma of the classroom, the age of the mole (I very little tried them, but this * handwriting * I well remembered) strawberries in the dust ... cocoa ... (24)
    • Taste
      Wax ... prunes ... spices ... sponge cake and cream ... (23)
    • Finish
Fruit salad and pepper wave ... but pepper is delicate ... very unusual ... strange peat nuances ... maybe not them?

A demonstration of fruit bomb elegant and complex wish.
    • Nose
A bomb of exotic fruit. The pleasure is immediate.
Passion fruit, mango, banana, peach, blueberry. The sherry casks worked well. We have candied fruits, syrup, without the sweetness being disgusting. Liquorice The balance is almost perfect.
    • Taste
Oily and honeyed. Just like the nose, the mouth is very exotic. The red fruits stand out especially (strawberry, cherry). A pastry side is also present, with butter and frangipane. It is particularly sweet.
    • Finish
The finish is long and sweet, a real sweet. Many red fruits.

I was shocked by this purity and complexity ...
    • Nose
      92 92
Very sophisticated and complex: sherry, creamy vanilla, flowers, fresh eucalyptus, fruits: waxy apple, banana, peach and mango, coconut, dark chocolate, leather, peat and salty sea air. Divine.
    • Taste
      93 93
Oily, fruity, bittersweet with sour citruses and tropical fruits opulent play, sherry, vanilla, flower honeys,
chocolate, coconut. The leather, smoke and peat is perfectly entry to the party. Awesome!
    • Finish
      92 92
Long, creamy and fruity. The flavors remain nicely. Especially peat and fresh mint.

  33. St. Pauli scored this whisky 93 points Connoisseur

What an amazing whisky. It's complex, oily and friendly from start to finish. The tropical fruit of mango and passion fruit remind me of some excellent Ardbegs from '74 and '75. The level of peat is moderate, but it's influence is pleasant. It has everything to dream of. This was a real treat.
    • Nose
Yes, this is a very pleasant and dignified old nose. As the nose is so soft, deep sniffs are allowed. What a wonderful combination of faint, wet peat, gentian, camphor, and leather. This earthy side is complemented by freshness of eucalyptus, and tropical fruit (mango, passion fruit). Then, it's creamy with vanilla custard, banana, some furniture polish. Beautifully complex, as almost never encountered.
    • Taste
Wow, the fruit continues! The taste is very friendly, not overly sweet, nor drying, with an oily texture. The tropical fruit is followed by a hint of linseed oil, waxed barley, honey, vanilla and a bit of polish.
    • Finish
Long, still very fruity and creamy, with sufficient contrast brought from the peat. It's slightly grassy with a bit of mint and pepper.

I did really manage to realize the famous coconut of older era Springers. A personal combination with the sherry and lightish, summery flowermeadow sounds: something even in the direction of good sweet fruity Imperials, Caperdonichs etc. Very good.
    • Nose
Sherry with the coffee, dark chocolate,  sourish and savoury, pastis, dried dates & figs, coughsyrup, herbal lozenge, coconut.
    • Taste
Salty and savoury, full, esthery, good rumminess, round and sweet. Coconut, banana. Something light and flowery. Than again sherry notes, sweet dark coffee, chocolate. Good.
    • Finish
      Apricot, pleasant and malty, long.

I would say this is just a tad fruitier and smoother than the same Springbank 21yo without the ornaments on the capsule. However, it's really hard to say as both are fantastic!
    • Nose
Rich, ripe bananas, woody, leathery, milky, vanilla
    • Taste
Oily, smooth, fruity, citrusy, oranges, apricots, well balanced between wood notes and subtle sweetness, little bit of peath and smoke, leather
    • Finish
      Medium long, smooth, fruity finish

Wow, this is probably the best whisky I've ever tasted. What an intense fruity profile, and what a superb balance!
    • Nose
Very intense, thick apricot. Mango, toffee, leather, milk chocolate, banana pudding, peat, vanilla, apple, litchi, strawberry, minerals and blossom. A nose to close your eyes and dream away by.
    • Taste
Mango, apricot, toffee, milk chocolate, leather, peat, honey, banana, pepper and a little bit of advocaat (egg liquor).
    • Finish
Mango, milk chocolate, toffee, apricot, peat and vanilla.

  41. Akoo scored this whisky 94 points Expert Senior

A whisky that stops the time. Once in the mouth, nothing else exists. A richness, a depth, a unique balance. It's fine, powerful in the mouth, and so good. An exceptional whisky! Some wine merchants still have some bottles. Go for it!
    • Nose
My first impression is: Ouaouch! What a nose! An explosion of exotic fruits: pineapple flambé, papaya, passion fruit. Plenty of juicy plums, plums and apricots that smell of the August sun. A nice little freshness with mint and a hint of vanilla. It's sweet, but not artificial sugar, no no no! A ripe mirabelle sugar. Some notes of honey too. A little milk chocolate, coffee. Spices too, but sparingly. It is devilishly rich! With the opening, a nice note of orange appears, giving just enough acidity to harmonize perfectly with the sweet side of fruits and honey. A delight!
    • Taste
Sweet, fresh, mint and all these fruits ... Pfiou ... It's surprisingly light. Spices are much more present than nose, but they do not take over and are not at all disturbing. The coffee, almost nonexistent on the nose is here very present with a cloud of milk, alongside the exotic fruits, passion. It is very melted, and of a remarkable richness.
    • Finish
Not very punchy, but the notes of coffee, exotic fruits are always very present, and very long, with the acidity of the orange and the freshness of the mint. It's a delight.

  42. tomy63 scored this whisky 92 points Expert Senior

deep gold color, nose close to 1972 with lots of exotic fruits, pineapple, passion, citrus fruits, cherry plum, lots of honey, some vanilla, slightly chocolatey, hint of smoke in the empty glass. The palate is sweet, perhaps slightly marked by the OBE, with a nice roundness, a lot of honey, the fruits of the nose, a slight acidity, the end of mouth is more about honey and vanilla, with some sweet spices . Only the final lacks a bit of length and punch.

    from a purchased sample
    • Nose
Fresh and nice. There's a very nervous balance between the sweet barley
and the sherry. Bright, acidic red apples, pears, melon, orange pith,
and mirabelles. On the ex-bourbon side of the house, there's a clear
dose of vanilla. The aromas are bright - even surprising for 46% - with
waxy flowers, wine, pink grapes (if you know what I mean), and all the
rest of it. Not quite the full fruit that you sometimes get in a
well-sherried Springbank, but it's clearly more in that direction than
the 2013 release, and flits back and forth a bit, which was fun for me.
    • Taste
Seemingly simple at first, but continues to develop. At first, you
might even think that this is a really lovely Clynelish with the
vanilla, wax, oak, and general ex-bourbon niceness. Eventually, some of
the waxy, oaky bitterness turns to white lemon zest and vague traces of
sherry - plum skin and quince jam. Sherry loses a step, but it's in that
really fabulous way that draws you closer and engages you.
    • Finish
The fruit from the sherry emerges more here, keeping it from being too
straightforward. The fruity melange is present, but just so subtle, and
it's tough to distinguish one fruit from the next. General profile of it
is probably pretty similar to the various fruit notes on the palate and
lesser so from the nose. Great, lasting finish. Not as smoky as I
recalled, but perhaps it's present in the waxiness.

    • Nose
First of - incredibly fruity malt with quite some beeswax, among the
      fresh/natural fruits are mirabelles +, plums +/o, peach o, a touch of
      smoke o/- and some grainy/cereal bits (92)
A bit later - freshly cut
Persimmons fruit +, chocolate/nougat from the sherry +/o, old books o,
even older leather +/o, poison ivy (mawed) o/-, beeswax again, something
      wet -, (93)
Later (+60mins): Quite a bit of vanilla now, actually so
much it coats everything else. I guess `smooth` would be the word...
      (85)
    • Taste
quite savoury/bitter wood & salty with some sweet & fruity malt notes and some wax and cookie dough  (92)
      Later:
Much less edgy but still torn between sweet & bitter, easily
drinkable & ever more vanilla & spicy malt & wood here as
well. Very very pleasant although bitterness is still slightly over the
      top. (91)

end, namely (dried) lavender o, Haribo Stafetten (candy coated licorice)
      o/-, coconut -, anis -. A touch of smoke o, salt again o/- &
(sometimes more, sometimes less) oak +/o/- (89)
      Occasionally, after
letting it breathe for 20+ minutes, a strong winey (sherry) infused
beeswax note remains standing at the end of the finish. (93)
      Later
(+60mins): The pleasant & smooth vanilla wood & spices continue
their march here as well. What works well on the palate, looses a bit on
the finish. Again, very pleasant, but still a bit of that wood
bitterness I`m not too fond of.(86)

An oustanding dram in a 80/20 combination of sherry and bourbon. There's lots to discover than you can write down on a note, so just sit back - relax - and enjoy this ride.
    • Nose
Phenolic, light sweet and fruity - dried fruit/plum (reduced: some wood smoke, briny notes, fruity - oranges/apricot/sultanas).
    • Taste
Very rich and full of sweetness (reduced: little bit salty, woody, mellow sherry notes and a nice layer of fruit).
    • Finish
Full, lang, warming with a mellow layer of fruit and wood spices

Why oh why didn't I buy a couple of cases of ths when it was only £45 a bottle? Sigh.
    • Nose
Oh just magic. Lots in common with that elderly 15, but this is much
more subtle. I think its that coconut note that really sets this dram
apart for me. The wood is there but its dry and clean. Dusty, rather
than musty. The oranges are dark, but not as dark as the 15yo and
certainly lacking that huge bitterness. And the coconut goes on and on
with just a dash of vanilla on it.
    • Taste
Beautiful sweet-bitter orange, then coconut, then woodspice, but the
spice is gentle and lingering and subtly integrated with the fruits.
    • Finish
And there at the end comes that huge juicy mouth-watering malt.
Stunning! I can never find a damn thing wrong with this dram. It is
      simply perfect for me.

If you like single malts, this is the ace.
    • Nose
Wow. A lot going on here. Dry fruits. Sherry. Hints of heather. Dusty malting floors. Old oak. Some leather. Salted nuts?
    • Taste
More dried fruits. Oily and sweet. Figs and pralines. Oaky. Mossy with tiny bits of peat smoke. Mouth coating.
    • Finish
Long and strong. Christmas spices. Dry. Salt and brine.
