Tamdhu Glenlivet, Scotch, Malt Whisky, 70° Proof, 100% Scotch Whisky. 8 Years Old. Distilled by The Highland Distilleries Co Ltd, Bottled by G&M.

No size declared on this miniature, which is probably 5cl. Has a very similar label to the one depicted on WB here. Has lost at least a third of its volume to evaporation over the years. Picked it up in an auction job lot and consumed Dec 2025.

A two-tone light orange amber in this light – looks nice in the glass.

Aroma is bready, gristy, browned apple with a hint of cardboard. Beeswax is a note I’ve seen in other people’s whisky reviews from time to time but I’ve never picked up on it until now in this particular whisky. Air helps it slowly move from cardboard to pineapple. Air really helped it.

    Body is lightly oily.

Taste is complex but scatty – bready malt, lots of tangy ‘high’ notes of waxy citrus and underripe fruit, waxy to an astringent degree, margarine, soft wood spice, buttery and always quite astringent. Some nice fruits build over time.

I’d say that oxygen and evaporation will have had an impact but the main thing spoiling this experience for me is the level of bitterness and astringency, and I’m not sure if that would be caused by the age. I wouldn’t say ‘soapy’ but certainly overly waxy and astringent to my palate. 3.05/73

Darker colored Sherry, with dried white fruits and dried flowers.

Here are the results of a H2H of 4 x 8 year old GM offerings, one from the 1980’s at 40% which was the HP, the other three from the 1970’s at 70 proof.

    Highland Park 8 year 40% 1980’s WB-43424 88/90/91
    Tamdhu 8 year 70 proof 1970’s WB-32435 87/90/89
    Glenrothes 8 year 70 proof 1970’s WB-34547 87/91/90
    Highland Fusilier 8 year 70 proof 1970’s WB-39329 87/88/88
The Fusilier is a blended malt

This was a very enjoyable head to head and all 4 were quality. These are only 8 years old remember, well worth an auction purchase.
They were all quite chewy and sweet, which I love in a single malt, even the blended malt Fusilier was right up there.
You cannot find an 8 year whisky like these on current offering, they would knock much older offerings out the park to be honest.
The good old days eh, looking at these 8 years old, it certainly must have been.

    Re taste - different bottle.
    Nose
A buttery nose, melted butter on toast actually, a little fruit and a faint burnt rubber note.

    Palate
The palate is a little thin at first but them seems to thicken up.
There is plenty of fruit on show, lemon, pineapple, mango, very faint peach, peach stones.
Some honey sweetness is there and the sweetness grows as you go on, the balance is good.

    Finish
This is on a similar level to the 1980's 8 year GM HP I have just taste, quite long and chewy and very composed.

This is a world away from the other bottle I tasted, this one thankfully is very good indeed.

The Tamdhu 8 year 70 proof is really excellent for an 8 year I wonder if 70`s GM 8 year is as good, here's hoping?

What an incredible let down that was, promised the earth and gave you soap, bah
    • Nose

A blast of sherry but also some peat which you don`t get with the 1970`s OB.
Blackcurrant, blackberry, mixed with dark ripe plum and sticky toffee pudding in the background.
It smells so much older than 8 years.

The peat is there and some toffee spice bit there is some soap as well which on first tasting is really hard to get round.
The fill level in this bottle was a little below the neck, I wonder if air has got to it?
No it is soapy, bah what a shame and the nose promised so much, there is also a metallic taste .
    • Finish
      50 50
Fades to metal polish and more soap

One of my more recent acquisitions of the whisky exchange. No, I have never tried it, I do not even know if there are miniatures available. Interesting for me is the entry here in whiskybase 32435, in which the image of the bottle, which shows a very bright whisky and my bottle on the other hand, is really sherry dark, it`s the same bottle with the same label, and perhaps a different filling ? A difference is, thet bottle here seems to be bottled for Italy, was there perhaps , in my bottle, helped along with caramel?
