Freshly cut grass. Surprisingly alcohol not very strong on the nose. Expected a thicker mouthfill given cask strength. Grass and light smoke. Finish short.

I like this one as I like the regular Caduro, but in my opinion the reduced version works perfectly and the cask strength adds nothing to the experience that I would deem necessary. Your mileage may vary, as when the people in the tasting I had this one in were polled, Caduro CS got the top spot.

Tasted as a part of a Wire Works tasting (thanks Pete & Maija!) hosted by Max Vaughan, who was generous and let us also taste a young and unpeated Local Barley version that was surprisingly delicious for its age and promised great things to come. Based on the tasting lineup Wire Works is the one new distillery I'm rooting for, since what they're doing is appreciably different and the quality is high. If only I could convince them to fill up a 3rd or 4th fill cask for me and store it in some corner for 20 years...

The lineup: Caduro (83 pts.), Bourbon Barrel 53,4% (85), Necessary Evil Finish 51,3% (84), Port Wine LBV 53,3% (81), Local Barley 58,7% (85), Caduro CS (83)

N: The phenols are as up-front as the standard Carduro, and then some, due to the abv boast. It drinks and drinks [water] but once the Wine Gums note appears, I find we are on par with the standard Carduro.

T: American leanings all-round, but haven’t these guys mastered STR casks. Those syrupy saccharin-sweet bubblegum styles we saw circa 2019 are long gone in a way that would surely make Mr Swan proud. Jim was clear that his STR innovations should not be static but evolutionary.

F: Over minimal peat but more peppered papery [barley sugar] action, the cask influence offers up a tannic challenge. From memory, was it not Richard Paterson who encouraged Drew Mackenzie Smith of Lindores Abbey fame [tWW], to look at a pepper note found in the distillery’s early new make? Personally, I like pepper, but what do I know about how it may evolve over time. Perversely, I find Fettercairn fairly peppery, the 16yo being a good example of this [WLP86]. Back to this whisky, from pepper, we move more towards more dry earth [with water], the advantage of having abv to play with so we can all follow down a similar path to the master blender[s] themselves.

C: No obvious improvements over the standard Carduro at a seemingly optimal 46.8% – much like Ardnamurchan’s core AD/ [WLP286] over its cask strength [WLP85] counterpart, but consensus on the night says otherwise.
