I'm affraid Jackson05 is right on this one; a very strange and unbalanced Benriach. Wrong cask or bad distillate? We'll never know. Unfortunately this whisky is completely wrecked. Should never have been bottled in the first place.
    • Nose
Good gracious, what's this? Lots of quirky notes of cardboard, yeast and wet mash. Cheesy and 'sweaty' sourness of vinegar and soap. Doesn't become any better after a while. Cut grass, lavender and some rotten juniper berries. Chamomile and other undistinguished herbs in the background. Disastrous!
    • Taste
A strange combination of violets, potpourri and overripe peach. Followed by sourness of Granny Smith apples but in a very wrong way. Yak! Also a chili-pepper heat that’s a bit too heavy. Associations of plastic. Liquorice and young oak, leading to a bitter aftertaste.
    • Finish
Medium long with hot menthol and nettle. Eucalyptus. Becomes quite chalky in the end, which is not as bad as nose and taste.

A little bit of a stern dram but has lots of depth, and becomes more complex as you go through through the pour. I think the last reviewer had a corked bottle which is a shame as this is a lovely whisky. I picked mine up relatively cheap due to the angels having their fair share, but the taste hadn't been impaired.

Lots of sherry, a little bit of vanilla and pear.
    • Taste
      90 90
Quite earthy considering that it's relatively sweet on the nose, mild oak, a lovely little hint of silage.
    • Finish

A slightly coppery but not unpleasant finish. Lots of heat, almost capsicum like.

I’ll be honest, it’s way harder to score a shit whisky, than a great one. It’s hard to find motivation to write a review because this is supposed to be a fun hobby. I would say anything less than 50/100 is a drain pour. This is barely above that level. So that’s how I arrive at my score. It could very well be cork taint, but whatever it is, it’s awful. Somehow better without water, but that’s no consolation. I’ll save it for my most fierce enemies and my mother in law.

Wet newspaper, cardboard, dusty Apple, burlap, grainy vanilla. Can’t get much past the paper/cardboard notes. A little toffee. Very hot. Even with a lot of water. Not good.
    • Taste
      60 60
Cardboard, paper mache, musty, corn husk, peach maybe, Apple. With water it’s the same. Full mouthfeel
    • Finish
      55 55
Long (unfortunately) with notes of...yes it’s cardboard and paper mache again. Chalky, vitamins. Again you could be generous and find a couple of fruits, but it’s dominated by musty cardboard, husk, chalky. Still the best part of a bad whisky.
