  1. peatbogger scored this whisky 90 points Specialist

I was gifted a miniature of the old version from Slainte Math.
Been holding out to do a H2H with the re-release, and after buying a case I figured it was about time.
I find the new one perfectly fine, so I figured it wouldn't be much difference... The truth is in the pudding... or glasses.
I can't get myself to totally slaughter the new edition, it's still a good whisky for what you pay. Which only can mean the old was exceptional value.
    • Nose
      89 89
First off, the old is off the scale darker than the new.
The new is still nice, sherry fruits and chocolate.
But the old...? It's sooo much richer. More wood, good wood, smells older, much more complexity.
The difference evens out a bit over time, but for the nose it is really an unfair competition. It even feels like the new one have lower ABV due to less spice.
I never thought the difference would be this much "in your face".
    • Taste
      91 91
Sherry fruits, wood spice, chocolate. Round and nice.
On the old one you can actually chew the wood before the spice kicks in. There's a development that is not present in the new where everything appears on arrival.
On it's own the new is just fine, I've really enjoyed it again and again. But next to the old it again appears simple and the wood is almost stale in contrast to refined.
Right now I'm asking myself if I still will be enjoying my purchase of a case of the new...
    • Finish
      90 90
It never wavers, spice, wood, fruit... it all lasts longer than the new, it stays sweet and never goes dry.
I feel I can defend 85 points for the new, it's a good whisky.
But that said.... I have to up this from my previous 89 to 90, it's beyond good, it's delicious.
