The 15-year-old Glen Garioch is one of the classic sherry whiskys; the magic words are written prominently in red on the label: Sherry Cask Matured. Luckily it's not one of the cola-dark sherry bombs; after 15 years in the Oloroso Sherry Cask, the whisky has a good, dark amber tone. Unfortunately, the days when it could be bought for under €70 are over; by the end of 2023 it will be approaching €90.

    • Nose
On the nose it is spicy with clear sherry, but it doesn't seem artificial. The alcohol is also strong. In addition to the sherry spice, there are cooked fruits with plums, sweet cherries and canned peaches, but then there are also more bitter aspects with grated hazelnuts, some tobacco and dusty leather. Fruit and spice are in a nice balance in the smell; the fruit is complemented by bitter chocolate aromas. Orange zest also shimmers through at the end.
    • Taste
The alcohol is strong and does not necessarily need to be diluted. But a few drops of water are certainly not bad. In the mouth the whisky shows that it is no longer quite young and has woody notes. On the tongue, the whisky starts fruity and creamy with compote fruits and nutty cream, then develops into a dry finish. The aromas are not brutal, but clear, the alcohol is strong and there are nice chocolate notes, at the end there are also almonds and a hint of marzipan, herbal sweets and cough syrup flash briefly without becoming dominant. All flavors are well balanced and not overpowering.
    • Finish
There remains a pleasant, slightly woody-spicy note, herbs and a remainder of chocolate, a few nut slivers. Not exciting and therefore good.

This is a nice whisky with clear sherry that isn't overdone or forced. It is a ripe and spicy whisky that is easy to drink and well composed. In contrast to the more modern sherry whiskys, the sherry notes are more subtle and better integrated, certainly with a good proportion of refill casks. Actually, it is the whisky that you should always have open - but now it has reached the premium price range. Actually, it's not a premium whisky, but rather an easy-drinking, well-aged whisky, and not just for the holidays.
