Nose: burnt rubber - but only if you go too close to it or you do not treat it to your 10 minutes in the glass before it disappears. If he gets this time, he shows tender, ripe, delicious smoke with a hint of ham and raspberries, blackcurrants and vanilla. Complex multi-layered wood tones enrich the nose in a way that I no longer want to take my nose away, in between I find cloves, allspice and strong nutmeg and cinnamon. Acid from the wood keeps the balance with honey sweetness.
Taste: surprisingly soft, delicate, supple, palate flattering, at first it almost seems too "thin", although it is rather syrupy, sweet, fresh red fruit, spicy with each little sip, oak, sawdust, it becomes stronger and stronger Departing longer and longer after the third sip I'm sure that the 43% rich, very elegant, independent
Conclusion: I like the elegance, fruits, spices, great oak flavors all there - great malt, available, affordable - probably. not for every day - I can imagine that polarized but I think it's delicious

    RATING: 86pts – |83 – 86 (B) → Good| — Not a “must”, but a nice-to-have.
    • Nose
      87 87
The nose has a very nicely balanced profile with notes of smoked red apple peel with foliage and strong black tea.
    • Taste
      86 86
The taste is pretty bowmore-ish and voluminous with hints of smoked citrus fruits, chocolate and black tea.
    • Finish
      86 86
The finish is medium to long with nice smokiness followed by hints of spicy oak and black bitter chocolate.

[December, 2013]  I found this dram in a commercial advents calendar.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 82,5.  I took no detailed notes and never bought a commercial advents calender again.

The nose knows how to please, on the palate the whisky is a bit too bitter and thin for me. 74 points.
    • Nose
Sweet, aromatic smoke. The smoke smells ripe and mild. Orange chocolate. Old pipe cleaner.
    • Taste
Significantly less sweet. Earthy and dry, slightly burnt wood, thin honey. Some soot. A noticeable bitterness that dominates the taste.
    • Finish
Quite long. Bitter orange peel. Rather dry.

Smells a bit sour, the peat is clear. No air to get lyrical about. First taste also somewhat sour, is that me? Pepper. The aftertaste is sour and woody - both in taste and in appearance. Some sweet tobacco comes through, farther. That is really nice. The bitterness in the finals destroys all pleasure. No.

I would like that one as cask strength! He's just to conservative with 43% vol
    • Nose
sweet smoke with lime, restrained oak and a touch of vanilla
    • Taste
bowmore typical smoke, a bit of fresh fruits and well balanced oak spiciness
    • Finish
medium for the smoke, the oak remains longer

  8. didi1893 scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Clearly Islay. The pinch of sea and salt are unmistakable. The pleasant smoke of the nose becomes more intense and "extreme" in the taste and finish. The fruitiness of the nose is unfortunately not so intense in the taste. The smoke and the ash in the finish are almost too intense and dominant for me personally.
    • Nose
Immediately raises fruity sweetness from the glass. A subtle smoky note mixes with the fruit. A pinch of salt and sea air comes to the fore. The fine smoke dominates over the fruit, but dark fruits (somehow citrus fruits) are still very noticeable. A light hint of vanilla is also present.
    • Taste
Salty smoke and fine wood are the first impression. A pinch of sea air fights against the ever-increasing smoke. The fruit is displaced by bitter wood. Slightly sharp, a tart but spicy aroma flows through the mouth.
    • Finish
The smoky finish exudes a bitter, bitter woody aroma. The salt is becoming more intense and a pleasant sharpness arises. Seasoning mixes with a hint of fruit, which is getting sweeter. The smoke turns to ash at the end of the outflow.

    Nose
An attractive deep brown-amber colour with a definite caramel tint; it starts with a tart ripe fruit and rich black tea sensation, accompanied by some ripe apple, chocolate, and sea salt, then a hint of tobacco and a hint of phenolic notes.

    Palate
A rare chill-filter process on Islay results in an extremely smooth and sweet feel, with salty sea salt smoke, damp earth and some oak, followed by the warmth of spices, some light dried sour fruit and hints of citrus and honey.

    Finish
Med-long; dry and slightly bitter, the mouth is still dominated by smoke and oak woodiness, with some soft and long dried fruit flavours, before slowly sweetening again.

A wonderfully complex malt! You could smell him for hours. The light Bowmore smoke harmonizes perfectly with the intense sherry and makes it something really special.

    https://www.aboutwhisky.de/tastingnotes/bowmore-18-years/
    • Nose
Heavy and very complex. A slightly cooling phenolic smoke is immediately noticeable. Then comes caramel, and a heavy sherry aroma. This brings a subtle sweetness, as well as ripe berries and dried fruits such as raisins. The individual impressions are difficult to separate from one another. The fruit intensifies over time as the smoke recedes a bit. The aroma also becomes a bit spicier over time and reminds me of dark chocolate. The initially noticeable slight sweetness has almost completely disappeared after the first taste and the dry character of the Oloroso becomes stronger together with the oak spice.
    • Taste
Intense with a light but not too dominant smoke. Then a slight sweetness spreads in the mouth and the fruits can be perceived again. I also taste a hint of dark chocolate and cocoa.
    • Finish
The finish is long with lingering smoke. The dryness of the Oloroso and the slight sweetness balance each other out at first. Towards the end, the drought prevails. The spiciness of the barrels and the cocoa also become more intense towards the end.

N - hardly poured into the glass, a torrent of assam tea flies towards you. Peat is in, but rather mild and flattering. Some baked apple flavors and chocolate.

M - Some alcohol. Start quite restrained, as well as the smoke. sweet, beautiful chocolate flavors with baking spices and tea again. He also stays in the exit, but gets some coffee to hand. Great, but nothing that has to be in the closet.

  17. kramimatsimoto scored this whisky 83 points Member Senior

Good whisky with a fair PLV. A little more alcohol would be great, but okay, can't change that.

N - smoke not so dominant, rather restrained in the nose. Nice chocolate flavors with spices. Not particularly versatile, but to the point.

M - Delicate start, the little alcohol is mild and very well integrated. The chocolate returns and joins the finish towards the coffee. Few fruit aromas, more spices encased in the biscuit dough.

    Wow, this bottle is great!
The batch is L152379 (50ml bottle)

It's really a good bottle of whisky, much more complicated than 15 years, and even better than Lagavulin 16yo, it is recommended to buy!
The total taste is 89 points, and the price does not affect the score.
    • Nose
      90 90
In the glass, it exudes a soft tropical fruit aroma (overripe, very sweet), and a strong sherry flavor, dark chocolate, caramel, solid wood aroma, smoke, and a hint of sea salt smell.
    • Taste
      91 91
Similar to the aroma smelled by the nose, the mouth first felt the fruity aroma of sherry, then the bitter-sweet chocolate, and finally the smoke officially became the protagonist on the stage. It's a pity that the irritation of alcohol is a bit high, not as supple as it should be in 18 years, but so many aromas are enough to make up for this small shortcoming, no problem!
    • Finish
      87 87
      Long smoky, caramel, dark chocolate

  20. Matthias80 scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

I think the Bowmore is one of the nicest in this price range. Complex and balanced, yet strong enough without becoming spicy.
The first bottle is almost empty, it won't be the last ...
    • Nose
Smoke, ham, then fresh citrus fruits, also a little zest, aromas from the sherry barrel are added, I notice raisins there. At the end I notice some heather.
    • Taste
The aromas from the sherry barrel are a little more present and varied than when you sniff. I perceive dates, raisins and dark churches. The Racuh is also there, of course, but in a rather subtle measure. There is also dark chocolate and a little caramel.
    • Finish
The finish is consistent with the previous impressions, sherry aromas and chocolate as well as light oak aromas are added, at the very end it becomes dry again.

    • Taste
      87 87
salty and plenty of smoke.. the Bowmore signature is written in violet letters all over this dram.. little spice and fruits, but only just.. some sherry sweetness.. good drinking strength, not thin, quite full and aromatic
    • Finish
      85 85
mostly spicy.. more sweet than in the beginning, the salt is just a memory.. so is smoke.. short lived

Medium smoky on the nose with aromas of honey and bacon, slightly fruity in the background with hints of vanilla.

Fruity and sweet in the mouth with slightly bitter notes.

In the finish, first cold ash (association with ashtray) then dark chocolate and notes typical of sherry. As the smoke decreases, there is an association with salt.

    (Blind tasting 2018)
I say at least 16-18 years, ~ 43%, Islay, possibly the infamous 18 year old Lagavulin DE? The perfect balance of smoke and sweetness would speak for it. Definitely very tasty!

Wonderful smell and taste. Very light smoke. Sweet. Almost a syrup. You don't notice the 43%. I don't like to swallow it. For me a perfect, pleasant, ultra smooth whisky. After the first sip, it smells even more pleasant, the smoke now gets through more. Old ham. Not fresh like Talisker. Old leather. Complex and balanced. The finish is so soft. I love this whisky!

  32. DulischM scored this whisky 95 points Expert Senior

A really very dark and berry whisky with a subtle and pleasant smoke in the background. One of my favourites.
    • Nose
At the beginning the whisky is complex, dark and creamy. Then all kinds of berries spread out (blackberries, blueberries and red grapes). Afterwards a lot of syrup and some forest honey on the nose, the whole thing is somewhat reminiscent of forest berry jam. The whisky is dark and fruity from the Oloroso wine barrels. In between I always catch some smoke, like when something is being smoked over the embers.
    • Taste
The dark fruits and berries then explode in the mouth. I recognize currant, blackberry and blueberry; altogether a full berry cake. Then comes the sweetness of the syrup and it tastes a little like dark berry candy. Finally, some oak on tap and a subtle smoke aroma.
    • Finish
Something smoked remains on the palate and blueberries fill the mouth.

A nose of coarse salt, the tide is there, iodine and fish, spray, a few rocks. But it's quite smooth and well balanced. The sherry is light, plums, apricots. A wisp of smoke. White fruits, raisins. A vinous, earthy side. Floral essences, white rose, primrose. On the palate, salt, peat, iodine, light fruits, Mirabelle plums. The finish is pleasant, with oysters and other seafood. Dried banana, sweet olive, almond oil.

This whisky is ok, but I hope for a bigger base for the gentle peat and some more subtlety than I find here, especially after 18 years in a cask.
    • Nose
Vanilla, oak, ash, caramel, a bit of pine, orange and lemon.
    • Taste
Smoke seems to come in at first, edging out the slightly sour and salty whisky – with the oak taking its place more firmly with some spices towards the finish.
    • Finish
vanilla, oak, dried apricot, black pepper, and caramel. The smoke, with a slightly salty edge, remains for some time. The mouth dries out slightly after some time.

A rather classic example of Bowmore, the quality is high.
    • Nose
Bowmore smoke with intense caramel, leather and soft peat. A mixture of sherry and bourbon casks. Kind of fruity, cans of pineapple. Salty and coastal.
    • Taste
Initially very sweet and fruity, then some leather and fresh herbs, sea salts and oysters. Bitter orange and leather come afterwards. Overall is very mellow and smooth.
    • Finish
Medium, slight bitter with caramel, liquorice.

could be one of the great standards if it would be 46% and no chill filtration. as it is, it loses much on impact of taste and texture altough you can feel how oily it once was. seems kinda cold, a little bit watery, frozen or muted due to the low abv and the filtering. however finish and nose are still a pleasure and my enjoyment is groing steadily. i dont regret the buy @70€, but above 80€ i would, just because of the rather weak midpart.

***edit: after two thirds of the bottle is gone im finally in love. in fact i had to order another bottle for the apocaplypse ( ; )and one of the 17yo because the 18yo went down that fast. the whisky has lost a lot of its plastiqe like style now due to the oxidation. another thing is, that it dont only needs desperatley time in the glass (its a beautiful nose then) but also in the mouth. after 15+ seconds on tongue , the first slightly bitter and rather uninteresting somehow soapy oak taste develops into multifaced spicy and sweet notes with a touch of menthol and herbs like sage. it also becomes very oily, although still watery. im even fine with no chill-filtration now. ;-)
nice whisky with a good price point (below 70€)considering this an smoky islay whisky of 18 years.

From the 18er I had 2010 (still another design, WID: 51916) two bottles and found the delicious, great, wonderful - very noble, elegant, harmonious. I'm not sure if it's because of my transfigured memory or whisky, but I'd say the current one has subsided. The direction is right, you recognize him again, but he does not come, he is not so noble, perfect, seems a bit "sloppy", a trifle, the fruitiness is a bit weaker, the fine cocoa is something in the direction of drinking cocoa ... clear That's a good whisky, but Bowmore was better at that. If it were as before, I would spend the current € 75, but the current form is not enough.
    • Nose
gentle, dry smoke, dark chocolate, tart fruity, blackcurrant, blackberry, slightly acid, old wood, black pepper ... later a hint of maggi ... needs time to breathe
    • Taste
intense dark chocolate, a gentle combination of dry smoke and black pepper, red berry fruit jam (but not very clear, more of a shadow ;-), wood pencil, sawdust
    • Finish
medium long, warm, dry, mild black pepper and cocoa

Not bad Bomo - expected that it would be worse, but hoped for the best. Total - in places it is very similar to the old perfumer Bomo (I mean the old 17-shku), and in the fragrance and taste, at least I'm very interested in this perfume, plus dried fruit, a bit creamy, the only big flaw is so weak and short finish , but in principle it is quite delicate in the good sense of the word. In general 86-87

hmm...it´s got a pretty nice nose, the palate is not bad but a bit disappointing after the nose and the finish is the weakest part.
    86/100
    • Nose
tasted immediately after tempest batch 2!
this is a bit rounder because there is some sherry influence to it. but fortunately it´s not an overpowering sherry and it remains rather "civilized" or call it elegant if you like. infact it´s less sherried than I remembered it. so good news for the project of emptying the bottle!
smoky, slightly floral, some tropical fruits (mostly maracuja), a little vanilla, a little oak, a little tobacco.
    • Taste
the sherry seems a bit louder on the palate but it´s still not too much. the oak is also louder and there is a trace of a dull sweetness in the middle of the tongue that really distracts your senses.
but it´s also earthy and leathery, smoky of course and the tropical fruits are there but very subdued.
    • Finish
      medium and a little harmless

A good representative of the middle-aged Ayla, quite deep and saturated for a commercial fortress, is well balanced. Of the minuses - poor taste and the absence of a certain zest, too much everything is standard.

    • Finish
Pepper-lemon on a smoky, smoked background with a fruit sour, full, long, then oak notes, cardamom, cinnamon.

    • Nose
Slightly sweet peat. Relatively fresh scent, it is a moment to me that appeals to such a flattened impression (but only in the smell, the taste no longer). Honey, the sweetness of fruit nectar, chocolate. Malt mature, with fine smoke and salty. (87 b)
    • Taste
Much oily on the tongue, smooth. Peat, creamy smoothness, caramel, light fruity sweetness, wood, chocolate. In the flavor of tar, smoke, ash clay. Overall, it works in a smooth, sophisticated way. But that does not mean it is faint or faint. (87 b)

A very elegant Bowmore. The inherently subtle Bowmore smoke recedes and strong woody aromas dominate. With 46% he would certainly be full in the mouth and on the finish.
    • Nose
Wild honey, roasted almonds, slightly charred wood, raspberries, oranges, very delicate smoke, which is becoming more and more in the background, dried fruit, plums, men's chocolate and smoked ham, wild garlic and the typical hint of lavender at the very end
    • Taste
quite soft and woody on the tongue, smoke is stronger, then it becomes slightly sweet and orange, looks quite elegant
    • Finish
cocoa and dried plums are followed by an initially restrained and shallow smoky note, becoming more woody and slightly salty-maritime, short to medium long

Overall, a delicious Islay Malt. But not to be seen as an increase to the 15er. It clearly lags behind in terms of complexity and intensity. Still very balanced. It reminds me more of an aged 12 with a little more sherry. Nevertheless, I always feel like a Bowmore after a nice barbecue on the beach - lovely
    • Nose
Sherry sweetness, honey and bright fruits come first, then afterwards typical Bowmorer smoke but much weaker than in the 12s or 15s, the campfire is only to be seen far away, oranges, light ocean air, sweeter and more restrained than the darkest, less complex and milder, leather , Salt, some caramel, tobacco, behind the smoke come ruminal fruits after some time, vanilla becomes clearer after the first sip
    • Taste
Salt, smoke, good spice, no alcohol, dark fruits, leather sea breeze, tart herbs, a bit soapy
    • Finish
Smoke, old moldy wood, salt and pepper, deep dark fruits, again long-lasting herbs, oak, medium-long, ash remains

    Bowmore 18 43% WID: 199

Nose: first ashes, some salt, tobacco, leather, old book, oil, in the background vanilla or caramel. Over time, the ashes disappear. Tobacco and leather remain. A few bitter herbs are coming.
After the first sip he is sweeter in the nose. Maybe with prunes. A little vanilla. Chocolate. Later with cool freshness.

Taste: clear sweetness. The ashes are back. Plums. Then he gets a little more acidic. Slight biting on the tongue. The sweetness is gaining the upper hand again and then making for some flowery place. Suddenly soap. The soap stays.

Finish: Sweet again, but with a taste of soap. Then increasingly spicy, but not peppery. Not too bitter. The flowery soap is omnipresent. With tobacco and ashes the soap stays quite long.

Conclusion: I am too soapy in taste and finish.

a top malt and unmistakably a Bowmore. The smoke is present but not dominating, but beautifully integrated.

    • Taste
oily, creamy, great mouthfeel, sweet, beautiful smoke, again the tropical fruits and chocolate.

Not unlike the "Darkest" but much more elegant, rounder, softer and fuller. A very elegant whisky without corners and edges.
    • Nose
Very intricately and fully interwoven flavors present: raisins in milk chocolate, sour cherries, cream caramel and distinct sherry. Above all lies a flowery perfume note reminiscent of a lavender pillow. The light smokiness is perfectly integrated and compliments all other flavors without covering them.
    • Taste
Wonderfully soft and oily on the tongue. Ripe cherries, creamy dark chocolate, cedar wood and some tobacco. The smoke is more noticeable here and, together with a maritime touch, forms the antipode to sherry.
    • Finish
Tender smoke, cedar wood, some ashes form a rather austere overall impression. In addition definitely salty sea air. Gradually, marzipan with cooked fruits is added.

    • Nose

    • Taste

    • Nose
Sweet and fragrant, almost perfumed, on gentle flowers such as wild violets and fresh lavender. It is ever so gentle and pleasant. In the background I find gentle smoke and dash of brine. All this is reminiscent to smoked herring by the sea shore. I also find some light vanilla sweetness.
    • Taste
Honeyed arrival, followed by exploding spiciness in the middle and towards the back - cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg.
The body feels a bit thin, but at the same time has a creamy texture and clinging well to the palate.

A slight reddish glow shines from the glass. The aromas are sweet, show distinct sea flavors and salt. In the background allusions of caramel. Above all, an astonishingly restrained peat smoke. In the mouth are sweet fruits, salt, seaweed and peat smoke. An extremely spicy combination. The finish is initially rather inconspicuous then come back with power and bring the peat aroma back.
A very nice Islay whisky that does not kill the connoisseur with peat smoke but leaves plenty of room for the other flavors. A very pleasant contemporary.

    • Nose
Campfire smoke with a quite sweet touch. The sherry is excellent integrated in the peat. You can also realize the sweet milk chocolate and the darker fruits of the sherry influence. Raisins, some plums. Maybe some notes of tobacco!

Unusual Bowmore i have to say, but very nice, it kind of grows on you.

Strangest aspect is its flowery taste which i never found in other whiskies sofar, quite lovely i have to say. For the rest this is a good example of a good peaty islay whisky.

The nose is quite OK, with peat smoke and dried citrus fruits. The palate is the challenge - artificial citrus sweetness and barley water switch soon to perfumy flower soap and artificial laundry softener which stay till the end. Unpleasant.

One of the very few I cannot finish the glass.

a tad perfume-y with a hint of parmamints upfront, then quite some smoke, turning sweet (sweetener), fake lemon ester (79)

N: spicy - cinnamon, creamy (advocaat) peat, syrup and mint
T: sweet honey, peat and a campfire
    F: spicy and ashes

    • Nose
Creamy aromas reminiscent of a wet forest during autumn supplemented with notes of smoke, honey, juicy apples and fresh notes of citrus increasingly pronounced. There are aromas of vanilla, brown sugar and dark, dried fruit (raisins) in sight. Very complex but also very nicely balanced.
    • Taste
A rich, complex and delicate taste with a clear influence of sherry casks and intense flavors of flowers with a note of citrus accompanied with chocolate flavors. Further notes of caramel, dried dark fruit and sweet soft peat can be identified with a hint of spice.
    • Finish
Complex aftertaste of salty tones and hints of soft fruit and dark chocolate

The showpiece of Bowmore, a complex, mysterious and mostly tasty whisky. Matured 18 years of the flavors and aromas are developed to adulthood, the years of experience and craftsmanship of Bowmore have then near perfection.

Bowmore`s 18 Years Old is one of the finest malts in its range. Matured in oak casks for over 18 years, the classic Bowmore smokiness is perfectly balanced with soft fruits and chocolate. A wonderful dram. Bowmore has won more awards than any other single malt scotch whisky.

A popular expression in Bowmore`s ongoing range, this replaced the 17

year-old, which was phased out a few years ago. Fresh, with notes of

    salty kippers and coalsmoke.

I wonderful daily dram on a winters evening
    • Nose
nice mix of peatsmoke, floral and sherrynotes, some fruits and some vanilla are also in here
    • Taste
first a gentle sweet with some sherry fruits, than the smoke come in
    • Finish
medium, the floral notes are stronger now (I usually do not like them, but they work in this dram), some sherry and salty notes and only a hint of oak influence

  128. Feusi scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Sherry with dark campfire, warm and round in the nose. A very pleasant spicy drop with a powerful and long finish, for me a top price / performance ratio.

    Bottle from 2007 or 2008.
Really disliking the perfume sweetness in here. Not my cup of tea...uhm, whisky. (69)

Either you like this whisky or you don’t. The floral perfume notes are to my liking..
    • Nose
A lot of wood, oak. Then comes a fruity aroma.
    • Taste
Its a smooth taste of oak, but then comes a flowery perfume taste. But I like it..
    • Finish
Medium long. Earthy tones, and hints of peat.

I found this 18 yo to be better as expected (based on the 2007). The perfumed notes were present, but not to my dislike. This bottling would be great with a spicy Cajun crawfish étouffée. 86 points (because of the celery).
    • Nose
Quite woody with vanilla, dark burned caramel and some older wood influences (cow stable, farmy, wet dog – nice doggy though!). Also peat of course, but rather of an earthy, leathery and smoky kind. Then aromatic flowery notes (must be the often despised fragrance of perfume and soap – but I did not find it very disturbing, its a nice twist this time) and pipe tobacco too.
    • Taste
Rather sweet wood influences (liqueur) and again aromatic soapy notes. It gets balanced by peat, salty sea water and Crustaceans with cooked celery stripes.
    • Finish
Long complex and circling around the sweet or peat theme.
