Not exactly a bargain at $119.99 and only 46%, but the nose and taste make it worthwhile. New mown hay, creaminess, and a long finish after being open for over a year. Apparently 3 bourbon and one sherry casks contributed to this, so much thought was put into it. Would like to see more here.

Tasted November 2024. Heather or mild peat notes. Maybe the new mown hay is what I called it before. Complex.

Tasted October 2025 1st taste. New mown hay is what it is and some negativity creeps in. Rating lowered.

Tasted October 2025. Now mixed feelings about this. But under influence. Kind of generic taste except finish improved. Still OK, but price is not.

This is a beautiful dram for the new Lowlands distillery, Daftmill. Their Daftmill 2009 Summer Batch Release, aged 11 Years shows off the distinct character of Daftmill, which reminds me a bit of legendary, ghost distillery Rosebank. It’s got a gentleness to the dram (not watered down), where orchard fruits, honey, the evocation of a summery day walking through open fields standout, citric brightness, but then the mid-palate hits with a beautiful note of dusty dunnage, old furniture to balance things out, and the type of dusty dunnage notes I haven’t seen in a dram this young (mind you, 11+ years is still fantastic for a new distillery).

Note: Fans of big “sherry bombs” or “peat bombs” should skip this. This Daftmill 2009 Summer Batch is more subtle and beautifully balanced.

For a farm-distillery that grows its own barley and then distlls and matures their whisky on site on their Lowlands farm, you’re really seeing what “farm-to-bottle” can mean, and all while not being rushed (11 Years maturation). This is the best Daftmill bottle I’ve tried to date, dramtically improving from their 2007 release. Daftmill is making the Lowlands proud, and I can’t wait to see what they release next.

Green apples, honey, open fields in Summer. Apple jam, white wine. After some time, red apples, apricots appear. There’s a gentle florality in the background.

Medium-thick viscosity mouthfeel. There’s a creaminess to the dram. Ripe red apples, gentle honey, green fields, gentle ginger. Dusty dunnage, and old furniture by the mid-palate to balance out the dram. It lends a nice complexity.

Floral aroma, herbs (but not herbal), flowers and other flora blossoming in open fields in the Summer. You finally notice a touch of the Sherry cask influence by mid-palate, fresh plums. Beautiful balance of the malt, wood and Bourbon and Sherry cask influences. But there’s also a brightness, almost citric, which makes this standout.
    • Finish
      90 90
Long. There’s a gentle ginger warmth on the finish, the creaminess and warmth embraces you. Apple, vanilla, honey, caramel notes, gentle vegetal and floral notes. Dusty warehouses, old leather and old wood in the background. These notes are perfect in balancing out the gentle sweetness in the dram.
