So, the first 100% ex-bourbon 12CS.. It didn't make me miss any of those sherry casks, so that's a succesful batch. I even gave it the highest score of the 12's I've tried so far. Straightforward Springbank profile without any added special effects. Like a beautiful woman that doesn't need any make up.
Clear buy recommendation at normal rates.

    Based on sample.
    • Nose
A little closed at first. But then, shimmers of a distant farm from somewhere around Campbeltown enter the nose. There's apricot, fig, raisin, banana, strawberry yoghurt, orange marmalade, salted caramel, light smoke, cow shed, sheep wool, burlap, creamy malt, honey and walnut. Very good! Can't detect any dissonant notes,
    • Taste
Mouth coating arrival, and not even that hot for its ABV. Typical Springbank DNA here. Apricot, fig, blood orange, cranberry, salted caramel, apple pie, honey, sheep wool, leather, roast almond, herb butter, engine oil and ground pepper. Brilliantly balanced, do I miss the sherry casks in here? Not per se. I think it's for the better but I can't make a comparison now.
    • Finish
A vibrant, long reverberation of the palate. Orange peel, apricot, cherry, salted caramel, chocolate brownie, creamy malt and almond.

Springbank 12yo Cask Strength Extravaganza: 2022.11.12.

Now that it’s been more than a year since the last release of the last CS12yo I saw it fit to go into my sample cabinet and dig up all the batches I could find. Here is what it resulted in: a gargantuan tasting of 13 different batches. I had to turn to decimal scores to do justice to this session (this is something I haven’t done before, mind you). In Order of my preference:

    Batch #21 (45% Sherry, 25% Bourbon, 25% Burgundy 5% Port) 56.1%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/168596
    87.2 / 86.4 / 85.6
This one is a bit of a confused batch for me, too much is going on at the same time. It has some nice pine resin notes and lots of wet wine cask character. The cask influence takes over distillery character too much for my taste.
    86.4

    Batch #12 (65% Sherry, 35% Bourbon) 54.1%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/77708
    87.4 / 87.2 / 87.3
This batch drinks quite a bit younger than its age. There is a sulphury quality on the nose and a particular earthy smokiness.
    87.3

    Batch #22 (50% Sherry, 50% Bourbon) 55.4%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/183244
    87.4 / 87.8 / 87.2
Most definitely, a modern style of SB distillate, the funkiness is elevated, and I even find some of the HB bitterness on the finish, I like this style. The spicy, resinous European oak is rather present on the palate.
    87.4

    Batch #16 (70% Sherry, 30% Bourbon) 56.3%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/105550
    87.8 / 88.2 / 87.4
This one has a good balance of sherry and bourbon, some roastiness, dried fruits, wood smoke, some nuttiness even. The malt comes through cleanly with lots of vanilla and floral notes, there is just a hint of menthol as well.
    87.8

    Batch #13 (70% Sherry, 30% Bourbon) 56.3%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/85595
    88.2 / 88.4 / 87.2
A more sherry forward batch with intense spiciness and complex boiled or candied fruit notes. Camphor, dirty distillate - farmyard, drying woodiness on the finish.
    87.9

    Batch #18 (50% Bourbon, 50% Sherry) 54.8%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/125395
    88.2 / 88.4 / 87.6
This has some very nice honied sweetness as well as floral freshness accompanying the rich maltiness and spiciness of the spirit. Fresh and white-oak-forward.
    88.1

    Batch #17 (70% Sherry, 30% Bourbon) 56.2%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/116449
    88.4 / 88.6 / 87.6
Intense, rich maltiness, vibrant spices and honey. Minerally distillate, earthy smoke in beautiful balance with the fruity, syrupy cask influence.
    88.2

    Batch#23 (100% Bourbon) 55.9%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/192086
    88.6 / 89.0 / 88.2
Very modern green type of American oak influence. A bit sappy, almost too sweet… but the creamy texture and the floral barley character comes through from the spirit, making it a very clean, juicy expression from the distillery. Most definitely dominated by the first-fill white oak.
    88.6

    Batch #19 (65% Bourbon, 35% Sherry Casks) 57.1%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/138854
    88.6 / 89.4 / 88.4
Smoky, dirty, resinous. Roasted malt and a bit of waxiness from the distillate. Strong honey note, vanilla, ripe fruits, and a touch of sulphur alongside the SB funk.
    88.8

    Batch #20 (35% Sherry, 65% Bourbon) 55.3%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/148336
    89.6 / 89.4 / 88.4
Heavy body, creamy, malty, spirit driven. Nice depth and sweetness from the reserved sherry influence. The barley comes through clearly, heavy oily texture, farmy, funky aromas. Almost reminiscent of the recent local barleys.
    89.2

    Blues Edition (100% Bourbon) 57.3%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/21544
    88.6 / 90.2 / 89.4
A masterpiece in floral bourbon maturation. Leathery, waxy and dirty, exploding with floral complexity and mineral hay notes. Almost no smoke, but a tiny bit of farminess. Drinks considerably older than 12 years.
    89.4

    Batch #15 (70% Sherry, 30% Bourbon) 56.5%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/99298
    89.2 / 89.6 / 89.4
Strong, spicy sherry influence, concentrated smoky fruitiness. Earthy vanilla, oily barley and pronounced farmy funk. This is one of the most intense batches and one of the dirtiest. The style of ‘dirty’ sherry casks is reminiscent of the old-school SB-sherry-funk.
    89.4

    Batch #9 (100% Sherry) 54.3%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/57458
    90.2 / 90.2 / 89.4
Elegant and fruity style of sherry comint through. Classic oloroso aromas, in perfect harmony with the dry and farmyard-y spirit. Spices from the resinous European oak, white pepper nutmeg, vegetal freshness and honied floral notes. Dry maltiness, some plaster, earthy smoke; all enveloped in thick juicy sherry.
    89.9

    And the baseline: Springbank 10yo (20/151) 46%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/180670
    87.6 / 87.4 / 87.2
Fresh woody and yeasty. Bitter funkiness not unlike HB, and some plaster. Fresh floral honey, some damp hay, dried apples and pears, waxy texture, barley-sweetness. Camphor and sharp spices give more depth.

Cut, oxidized apple, minerals, orange peel, apricot jam and dark chocolate. There's a nuttiness and a hint of linseed oil as well.

With more water and time the fruit develops more towards compotes and you get more air dried charcuteries from pork (so fatty and fermented notes, in the best possible sense).
    • Taste
      89 89
This whisky has the ful package. It's oily, funky and with a touch of smoke. Yet, it's warmly welcoming with golden fruit notes - not of the fresh variety but also not heading to wards dried fruit. Rather, think curacao, apple compte, apricot jam, pineapple syrup, and even a little limoncello. So a smorgasbord of cooked and macerated fruits and citrus peels.

Then dark chocolate covered marzipan and a pleasant oakiness to underline all "processed" fruit.
    • Finish
      89 89
An effervescent wave av fermented pineapple and peach washes over me (love it when that happens), followed by a long finish with curacao, apricots, marzipand and chocolate.

It's a strong 89 points overall, and with more of that air dried, fatty meat on the palate and finish it would easily have been a 90.

A good 12 CS, but I liked the old ones from 2-3 years ago a little better. This one is still good, but a bit too compliant. You can clearly feel the sherry casks in the nose.

Between 88 and 89 points depending on the mood of the day and preferred taste profile.
    • Nose
      89 89
Good mix of sherry and bourbon, light saltiness, less dirtiness than the predecessors from 2 years ago. The smoke can only be guessed at.
    • Taste

A little saltier than the nose. Beautiful body. Here you can feel the sherry influence much less. Slightly more tannic palate.
    • Finish
      88 88
The finish is medium and the mouthfeel slightly oily, very clean.

We immediately smell the white fruits, punctuated with citrus fruits, it's very well done, there is a nice fullness. It's soft, ethereal, the influence of Bourbon comes to light, with a vanilla as if candied and a delicate lemon. It's complex, the peat brings a certain solidity, a touch of iodine, hay, a slight freshness. The mouth is very full, filled with Bourbon of course, but also pastry, satiny, sponge cake, nougat, sweet spices, fine acidity. Vanilla mousse. Very long finish, aggressive just enough, with always a torrent of fruit pouring out. Kumquat, grape, currants. Sandy beach.

    From a sample.

Great surprise as the lack of Sherry influence really brings more yellow/white fruit and puts forward the salty maritime DNA thats sometimes seems a bit overpowered by juicy Sherry casks, not that I dislike those batches though. The smoke is clearer too in this one.

A solid score of 89 right off the bat that could become a 90-91 with patience and a dented bottle.

Aroma - saturated, bright, sweet. Baking, vanilla, honey undertones, cinnamon, spicy spices, sweet citrus aromas. Green apple, tropical fruits, peaches, apricots. Fresh cut grass, minerality, leather goods, industrial theme.
Taste - explosive, rich, sweet. Lots of honey, vanilla, ripe apricots and peaches, sweet tangerines. Spicy spices, pepper, ginger, industrial theme.
The aftertaste is long and sweet. Honey, spicy spices, tropical fruits, ginger, industrial theme.

Conclusion: 12 years old, bourbon barrels, you have to work really hard and hard to get a whisky like that. Great job, as always.

so what can be said at the end of a bottle..?

that i did not feel the need to reach for my pippette? not that i’m some kind of purist, the thought never actually crossed my mind. It’s a solid malt! And i am delighted to bask in the unmistakble signature and the level of unrivaled quality?

that i did not feel the need to write a memo? why bother? there is no way i can forget about this splendid child of Campbeltown.. its elegance, its power, its balance

that i will drop the last centiliters into my solera? that i rest assured at having another bottle in the stash?

that i loved its austerity, its surgical precision on the tongue.. the furnace at the base of my throat.. that it goes well with chocolate?

so why “just” 89..? Was i not entertained? Sure i was, but an old, complex whisky this ain’t.. but for what it is, it is a beast! A gentle beast.

    10cl samples

    Nose

Roasted pineapple, some mango, a bit of green banana accompanied by a nice lemon/lime aroma, vanilla, strawberry mint, some Springbank Funk (hay, clay, subtle sulphur) subtle mineral, maritime smoke (sandy beach, mussel shells) plus great pastry notes (pancake batter , croissant and biscuit)

The nose is very, very fine and the taste is also super present. Very harmonious in the finish then a very fine oak spice (milk chocolate and hazelnuts) before the whisky ends maritime and subtly salty.

Conclusion: Very fine, harmonious Springbank, which looks much older at 12 years old. The current prices are still too high. What a pity!

An archetypal Springbank. Without the overriding influence of maturation/finish in a wine/port/sherry cask, the fine aromas of the distillery character and the ex-bourbon maturation come into their own here and complement each other harmoniously for me. Great!
    • Nose
For me, three components stand out here:
1.) The typical Springbank character: maritime, oily, somewhat dirty, old school, garage.
2.) Ex-bourbon aging: honey, vanilla, caramel, citrus
3.) Oak: fine acidity, some chalk.

Goes great together and is great fun to smell.
    • Taste
The alcohol strength is perfect for me. It has pressure and is powerful, but not overwhelming. I find all three components from the nose in the taste.
Oily consistency, a bit dirty, pleasantly sweet with honey and caramel. Dryer on the palate with oak and fine acidity, which now reminds me of white wine.
    • Finish
      Warming, medium length and aromatic.

I did this Springbank 12 (batch 2021) back to back with the batch 2020. I give the edge to the 2021.

Interesting to taste a Springbank 12 CS 100% Bourbon. This batch is unique for me. Really different from the previous batches. Same good farmyard taste and really oily, but without the influence of the sherry cask (as the previous batches).

First ever 100% bourbon Springbank for me.

N : first nose on vanillin, metallic sharpness, rusted engine and some orchard fruits (apricots ?). Not a lot of oomph there yet. I find it more acidic than usual bourbon/sherry releases, and way more floral (orchids) after a bit of time. Speculoos undertone. And pastry dough.
M : on the sharp side there. Pungent, and still acidic. Engine oil mixed with floral essential oil. Sharper and sharper, not my cup of tea.
F : just enough power, never overtaking, dirty for sure but not too much. Just like the nose, a balance between sharpness and sweetness, with the floral and fruity notes. Copper. Licorice. Sourdough too. Then a neverending dry sharp note.

Well obviously too sharp for me. I didn't enjoy the drink, but in its category it's a nice one. I guess the use of sherry helps softening it while opening new directions. 2nd market is horribly overpriced and not worth it. 6/10 but it's really about the profile there.

initially I was not thrilled .. then, at a second taste, it is more convincing .. it gives the best of itself with the addition of water, without alcohol is a bit too present, with 4/5 drops of water the strange emerges and fascinating springbank peat, with that taste of ginger, gingerbeer and grapefruit, acrid and almost bitter, medicinal and vegetable (also the smell similar, very vegetable with hints of camphor) overall excellent whisky but a little too expensive and therefore I give him a point less than his real score, for now among the cask strenght the best is in my opinion batch 19 (but at the old price of € 80 and not at present) and as a quality price the 10 yo still remains unbeatable

Very versatile and contantly evolving nose, fruitiness, earthy/peaty and a bit smoky. In taste a little less variety and more alcoholic, the finish has a predominantly smoky and earthy character.
    Very pleasant whisky.

Full scent, earthy, leather, a bit of tar, a lot of citrus. Some sour edge. A touch of hay, very versatile nose. Then some woodsmoke and tobacco. Licorice.

More smooth now, pepper, a little ashy bitterness, smoke, tobacco. Later on the alcohol gets more present. Pretty long finish.

really lovely. nose is a bit shy. Gentle bourbon cask notes. Wet stones. In the palate it starts to wake up. It tastes like springbank :-). Clean. Elegant. The bourbon is there but more dialed back than the bourbonwood or the 57.1 batch. Coconut. Vanilla. Dunnage. bit of peat. Gentle machine oils. Fruit juice - maybe dilute orange and mango. The finish is superb. Finding it hard to think of another whisky where it builds from subdued nose to such a great finish. Oak. Peat. Vanilla milk. Grubby workshop (just the right amount). Maybe even grubby mechanic overalls.

N: Matured in 100% bourbon casks [once again], we’ve Springbank’s immutable funk in the form of chicken mushroom pie,… Cuppa Soup, rubber bouncy balls, something unusually perfumed such as fruity satsumas wrapped in suede, a touch of plasticine, icing sugar, calendula oil, beeswax, a drop of parma violets,… what’s not to like? A cracking nose, a good read.

T: We pick up right from where we left off from the nose towards a savoury trajectory. With a lighter body than the hand-filled number, it’s nevertheless salty and prickly [in a good way],… and rather dry if not drying. Descriptors-wise, we’ve notes of vanilla linseed, something around charred seaweed,…

F: Grainy, still salty > spicy /< vibrant,…. sustaining, more greasy with water,… Indeed, it’s not the most accomplished swimmer though essence of barley it remains at heart.

C: Decent malt even if it doesn’t quite match previous CS releases [2020: WLP89]. Regardless, it hasn’t stopped these bottles fetching three times last year’s rrp, at auction.

Never was a fan of previous SB12s because they were always dirty (sulphured). At least whenever I tried them. Always always preferred the 10. So an all bourbon 12CS? I’m listening…

In summary, I like it. Better than other batches. I’d buy it at a fair price, wouldn’t chase it.
    • Nose

Some dry woods. Hay and straw. A little green - grass, green apple, kiwi. Quite Irish to start. Not getting that peat or minerality yet. The nose is not the star, IMO.
    • Taste
      88 88
Full, rich. Salty, butterscotch, ginger, apple, pear. Still woodsy with straw and hay. Prickly heat, cayenne, white pepper. Some ‘chewing’ brings more fruits. Starburst. So far it’s not better than the 10. Fight me.
    • Finish
      89 89
Salty, caramilk… Then after a few seconds a wave of tropical notes. Mango, kiwi, guava even, definitely the highlight here. The finish is my favourite part, absolutely.

    Nose.
Because of the strength of the barrel, the alcoholic sensation forms a barrier in front of the aroma. If you do not go beyond the influence of the alcohol to perceive it, you tend to lose the clues of the aromas. The aromas are intensely grapey cava, sultanas and candied fruit. Fresh and fruity notes lurk underneath the candied notes. Cake, chocolate brownie and light cream linger on the walls of the glass. Crunchy dates and dried red dates make an occasional appearance. The flavours are layered but at first smell are integrated.

    Palate.
Grape fizz-like but not at all annoyingly sweet. The sultanas and caramel are easily detectable. Fruity, fresh plums, oily leather, wet earth and smoke screen in the mind, and a moment of flux makes the tasting more pleasant.

    Finish.
Sultanas and cava appear again in the finish. A hint of astringency and smoke lingers at the base of the tongue. Some candied notes also linger on the tongue. A swallow of water and a very refreshing mountain spring-like sweetness. The finish lingers with a hint of woody notes and some sea salt and smokiness to accent it.

I'm actually reluctant to break down a flavour review like this because it's really so good. I've always referred to Genting 12 as a 'grape fizz', a nickname for it. Although this year it was replaced with a 100% bourbon barrel, which is a way to reduce costs without losing quality. In terms of taste, it's still the same, with 12 Strong always having its core flavour and that 'grape fizz' taste that you can tell from a single sip.

Great good whisky. Maybe I was expecting too much, given the fame that it brings with it and therefore there is a bit of disappointment, but thinking about it is a great whisky: balanced, elegant, with character, but without overdoing it
    • Nose
On the nose, aroma of bubble gum, vanilla, custard, green banana, powdered sugar, raisins, a slight marine touch. The peat, very light and mineral, comes out after a while. The alcohol pricks the nostrils and then I leave the whisky to settle in the glass for a few minutes. The alcohol subsides and a wisp of smoke comes out. A very balanced and iridescent nose, with aromas that follow one another and change minute by minute
    • Taste
In the mouth it is sweet and salty at the same time, as I like it, touch of lemon, pepper, custard, a little salt. Alcohol tingles enough, especially when swallowing
    • Finish
Long and delicate finish, with notes of vanilla, plumcake and a pleasant balsamic sensation

    • Taste
      91 91
The attack on the palate is thoroughly cereal, a well-assumed farmer side, the bourbon barrel gives this vanilla side bringing roundness but not too much, it retains a liveliness, sweet spices, everything is perfectly balanced as usual at Springbank.

A sweeter expression compares to the 10yo but equally strong on spice. More intense on nose. Overall a very strong and balanced 12yo. My guess is, it's at least FF bourbon cask, might even been toasted.

You know what, I do not miss any sherry here. This nose is perfect. No need to mention smoke, soot and ashes, as they are always there when it comes to this expression. A salty breeze and (I might be dreaming) there is also some honey behind a nice minerality.

Very complex tanned bourbon nose. Honey and smoke but delicate. Cigarette smoke and dust after 30 minutes.
The taste is even more complex. A very sharp attacking alcohol. Pepper and vanilla and oak, bitter dry zest and the taste of alcohol. Salt and wet stone and some kind of complex and incomprehensible taste for me. Possibly bandages (light medicine) and salt.
Surprisingly, a few drops of water improve the taste and finish, but not the aroma. Although this whisky has complex transitions in taste and aroma, it is somehow very complex.
At the finish it is pleasant to savor it with wax-bourbon shades. But I would say that there is no balanced character in it. Although it all sounds like a song from a not bad bourbon barrel ... which someone decided to spill!
And yet this is Springbank unambiguously, albeit 100% bourbon.
As for me, there is still a drop of a sherry barrel missing here.

For 100% bourbon it is quite dark - you can tell that something is “different”, but it's not that something is missing, because the 12 CS is always “different”, no batch is like the other.
A comparison with the previous batch # 22 shows very clearly that the 50% sherry barrels that were used there make the whisky taste softer and more accessible. Batch # 23 is much more demanding than Batch # 22 (91/100), which you have to be able to handle. It may take a little time to get to know him. But since all of this takes place at the usual very high level, as a friend of this bottling you are very happy to deal with it.
And otherwise? Was there anything else? Indeed, there was something else. But let's just pretend that the 12 CS is simple, durable and available for around 55.00 just like it used to be, and it's easy on the heart and nerves.

What I like so much about Springbank comes so immediately and right at the beginning of the smelling: this mineral note, these saltwater-wetted pebbles. One could easily get the idea that this is due to the lack of sherry or sweet wine barrels. Dried apricots and peaches, a very nice (aromatic) spicy note with thyme, rosemary and chervil. Quince jelly and mirabelle plums - there is a lot of light fruits on offer here. Milk chocolate, café au lait, caramel candy and honey.
    • Taste
      90 90
Starts absolutely classic: mineral, salty, peppery. Lays quite dry on the tongue and has a smoky note with it that I have only had with very few batches of the 12 CS in this intensity. Caramel and toffee, malt, dried apricots, raisins, dates. Freshly tanned leather, a floor covered with old wood shavings. Over time, earthy and loamy notes appear, the spices from the nose find their way onto the tongue. Tart forest honey.
    • Finish
      89 89
Lingers on the tongue for a medium to long time with its mineral, salty and slightly smoky note. Only a little fruity, but now chocolate-accentuated and with a lot of toffee and milk coffee.

Cool! Really great unadulterated Springbank whisky.
    • Nose

Smoked ham, milk chocolate and caramel candy, maritime with lemon peel and a few herbs, in the background something that reminds me of WD40 (lubricating oil)

Cool! Classic Bourbon Campbeltown style, with lots of chocolate and lemon, salty caramel and herbs, leather and red pepper

Medium to long, warming and relatively dry, mineral with herbs, green tea to matcha

[November 2021] A new batch of the Springbank 12-years old CS is a must try, for sure. By the way, I paid 79 Euro for a bottle at my local retail shop - but it seems as if many online shops simply doubled that price right from the beginning. So this time it is not the distillery which is greedy but the retailers...

...and this is a good chance to explore the unmasked Springbank profile - but lovers of the more powerful sherry- or rum- or port-casks batches might be somewhat disappointed of this rather subtle and delicate taste, which is absolutely okay. Leave this stuff for the old-time folks!

[October 2022] I re-tasted this dram tonight in a head-to-head with an old 12-years old "red thistle" bottling, and in the direct comparison I like the red thistle a little better. Hence, I would score this dram rather 89 points tonight (but this is only because of the direct head-to-head to an old bottling).

The colour is old gold, and the nose offers the trademark "naked" Springbank profile, meaning no sherry, port or other strange casks involved this time - this is just a straight bourbon casks maturation. So, if anyone wants to explore the unmasked Springbank profile this is your chance! The somewhat "dirty" components like machine oils, medicinal bandages (unused) or dusty warehouse floors are clearly detectable beside the more traditional aromas (honeys, waxes, fruits, herbs) and an interesting impression of a high-quality dry white wine. I am not sure if modern drinkers like this strange mix, but I do.
    • Taste
      91 91
Wow, the taste is excellent too! A complex amalgam of dozens of different flavours floats over my taste buds and many of them are rather old-stylish, so this taste truly reminds me of long-gone Springbank bottlings of the past. It is not really layered but hey: What to expect from a 12-years old in this dimension? After some chewing more flavours pop up so I suggest taking your time with this dram. I do not detect any off-note or imbalance, this is a perfect young (12-years old) whisky taste.
    • Finish
      89 89
The initial mouthfeel is hot (due to the high abv of 55.9%) but turns quickly into a warming and coating texture without distracting moments. The finish is medium to long and adds more of these old-style waxy and chalky-mineral impressions together with some bitter herbs what I like. Again, no bitter or drying moments until the very end. Some water releases more herbs in the nose (among them aniseed and camphor) and the taste turns punchier (alcoholic). A further reduction strengthens the waxy-oily side of the nose and smooths the taste again. This dram is an excellent swimmer and I strongly suggest playing around a little with water (if you own more than just a small sample).

This bottle is good, which comes as no surprise, after all was this was a forgone conclusion as it is Springbank, and their releases are consistently made to a good standard. It’s not however as good a dram as their previous release (50% bourbon and 50% sherry). Would I recommend you buy a bottle if you can get it for RRP? definitely, but if you’re looking to the auctions for your latest bottle of Springbank then I’d suggest going for one of the earlier cask strength releases which arguably are better.
