  1. glen efze scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

An eight year old Port Askaig, white wine light. Expectations? Of course: strong Islay character, refill bourbon barrel, decent smoke and then don't think about it any further, just drink and stare at the sea before the festival hustle and bustle really begins.

    • Nose
The sea is there, it rolls onto the beach without much excitement, a few shells are lying around, the seaweed rotting in between. The skies are Scottish, the clouds uninspiring and the occasional patch of blue sky that clears quickly. Ok, too many words: smells like Islay without much fuss.
    • Taste
The whisky is strong without the alcohol burning, there is sweetness that is not sticky and of course there is smoke. A generous spoonful of ash from the beach fire is mixed into the sweet fruit juice. Not by accident, but because that's exactly what you want. And because the juice only gets that good, otherwise it would just stick sweetly and attract wasps. So he fights them off. And the aliens too...
    • Finish
Smoke, what else. Must be like that!

Do you have to think long or even philosophize about these Islay Malts? Unfortunately yes - because the question often arises, why can't they all be so clear and simple? This is not great, this is not a revelation. No cascades of aromas unfold. But there is the sea, there is this indifferent sky, there the seaweed is rotting. And you sit in front of the keyboard yourself, in the other screen window reality is running as a news stream. This whisky is simple, yes. And therefore simply good. Sometimes you don't need more.
