Not very complex. A perfect example, if you want to taste pure (medium strong) Islay peat.
    • Nose
      71 71
First impression is sweet smoke. I would say, that it suggests a one-dimensional dram.
    • Taste
      76 76
There it is (different to nose) - pure Islay peat, that is very prominent, but not strong. Behind it, there is laquer and nuts. Mouthfeel is oily and convenient. Fruits only with some imagination - I would call it simply sweetness.
    • Finish
      77 77
      Long maritime peaty lingering taste.

  3. uap304 scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

Not complex and water absolutely kills the event. Certainly not the slap in the face that you might have expected at this age, but a rather nice gently plated expression at an affordable price, especially considering that it ticks all of the boxes of integrity. There's also the added bonus of getting to try and figure out which Islay distillery this is from!
    • Nose
Sweet, peat, vanilla, honey. More vegetal than smoky. Brine, methyl. The BBQ sauce note that came through on the "110 Proof" version. Very promising! A nose like Call Ila.
    • Taste
A bit thin on the body. Sweet and becoming sour initially. Peat and oak become predominant, as it gets progressively more sour. A taste of Port Charlotte.
    • Finish
Tangy, salty, fairly long. Quite bitter. Latterly, coming back to mineral and sweet cotton candy. A finish reminiscent of Ardbeg.

A very nice Single Malt from Islay at a good price. In my opinion, whisky tastes better than it smells. The alcohol is completely undetectable with a well-balanced and balanced sweetness, but there is also a lot of freshness in the form of citrus and apple notes. All of this shrouded in smoke makes the whisky feel more than good in my taste buds. I recommend!
    • Nose
      87 87
Bitterness, charcoal, burnt gum, citrus, a little honey
    • Taste
      88 88
Sweet, smoky, burnt milk, vanilla, fire ash, red apples, oak
    • Finish
      88 88
Long, sweet, honey-bitter, slightly spicy at the very tip with tingling on the tongue, lots of smoke

    Port Askaig 8yo, 45.8%.

    30ml at home, Aug 2021.

Very pale yellow with an almost green hue.

Aroma is biscuity, banana, young Caol Ila or Lagavulin (I find their young spirits similar on the nose, but not the palate - although this is almost certainly a Caol Ila). Becomes a little seaweedy rock pool later on. Faint soapy dish water.

Taste is salty, light burnt toffee, almost a savoury version of salted caramel if that makes sense, a little muted buttery oak, very light on the palate with no burn, the finish had no spiky edges at all. Very pleasant character. Salty and vaguely buttery...salted fudge is a close analogy but I stress that it comes across as pretty savoury rather than sweet. The peat is integrated and doesn't really come across as smoke as such. Very pleasant. 3.5/84

Feels like a refill bourbon Caol Ila. In fact, this ought to be a blind taste test for anyone who thinks they know their Islay, because it's so obvious. I like the nose a lot, but the body is too watery and flabby to earn a high score. Since I've complained that the current Laphroaig 10yo OB tastes nice but too watery, and feel the same way about this one, it would be hypocritical of me to give this anything else but the same score.
    • Nose
Seashore vibes, distant bonfires, seashells, shy citrus notes. You know the drill. More detailed but less full than the current 12yo OB.
    • Taste
A bit oily on the tongue, but mostly on peat, coal, seashells and burned driftwood. The body is somewhat watery, which does spoil it a bit, and is a surprise considering the ABV. I do prefer the 12yo OB.
    • Finish
The peat and salinity last a while, but there's nothing more to this.

Immediately I remember the barrel release of this malt, which is a head or two taller. I will not say that this is a straight smoky monster, an indistinct aroma, but the drinkability is high, the taste is not bad, the aftertaste ..... I will not say anything ...

    Pretty nice. Not more. Unfortunately.

With a simple peated bunna, a Lagavulin 8 or a Caol Ila 12 you are much better served and usually costs no more or even less.
    • Nose
      82 82
Very maritime, relatively gentle and light smoke, 'salty', delicate sweetness in the background. Wet wood, some seaweed. Feels quite young and still immature (but not really bad at 8 years of age.) The sweetness of the delicate smoke is very nice.

      Surprisingly light and reserved character.
The empty glass actually reveals the most interesting aromas.
    • Taste
      81 81
The smoke gets a bit stronger, still sweet, a bit cold campfire, still maritime. Unfortunately, it feels a bit watery and meaningless. Relatively little Islay feeling for an Islay smoker.

2nd sip: Noticeably watery. And sweet. With a delicate maritime touch and spicy wood notes.
    • Finish
      81 81
Quite flat, somewhat watery, sweet, very delicately maritime. Fades very quickly, but is extremely pleasant and even flattering.

    I guess Caol Ila ...
    • Nose
      86 86
Sweet smoke, ripe banana, vanilla, pear, ham and campfire, mint chewing gum
    • Taste
      82 82
Lots of pepper, then smoke, tobacco, fresh wood, pear, otherwise not very fruity, slightly sweet and herbaceous, dry
    • Finish
      82 82
Medium-long and hot, slightly tingling, less smoke

  17. Beaty-Tang scored this whisky 81 points Member Senior

Personally, I would bet on Lagavulin. A little youth is still noticeable - otherwise a lot of smoke but also a good portion of fruitiness. All in all, not very complex, but pleasing.

  18. Ullu scored this whisky 73 points Expert Senior

Felt heavy smoke after opening, but it dissipates quickly.
    • Nose
      76 76
Very smoky, campfire, but someone threw something into the fire that doesn't belong in there but has a strong (artificial) smell. Something chemical ...
    • Taste
      72 72
      Slight alcoholic heat, little depth.
The smoke tastes clear and superficial. Leaves behind a bit of a bitter taste that one would rather get rid of than keep.
    • Finish
      70 70
Very short, burns a bit hot, more like schnapps.

I have just tried it for the first time. For me it is a nice one.
    • Nose
      85 85
Peat, Salt, Smoked Meat hanging in the pantry. Then it changes, minerality and smell of refreshing summer rain. Granny Smith sour apples, hint of vanilla in the background, getting sweeter, sugarcoat of fresh fruit.

With water: Fresh acidity, and raw fruit becomes more dominant, black pepper.
    • Taste
      84 84
Fresh and mineral, fresh fruit notes only come to the front when water is added. Peat is beautifully balanced.
    • Finish
      85 85
Surprisingly long, for the stated age, and/or ABV. Nice.
At the finish the peat, and salt make a return, after been subdued on the palate.

      78 78
vanilla, sea, creamy, alcoholic, young, salt, smoke and peat, simple
    • Taste
      79 79
sweet, pepper, new wood, peat and smoke, tobacco, oak bitterness, engine oils
    • Finish
      80 80
wood, bitterness, oak, dry, chalk, smoke, peat, chili, pepper, long and dry

  21. Malzbrenner scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

In the glass an eight year old Port Askaig, straw yellow and bottled with 45.8% vol.
    • Nose
      84 84
Smells sweet and peaty, with a little iodine and yellow fruits. Ripe bananas, apricots, white chocolate, smoked ham and hot rosemary.
    • Taste
      83 83
Sweetness and smoke and some ammonia at the beginning. Ripe pear and some banana also play a role and a herbal note follows before mint sets in. For his young age he does his job quite well, but everything looks a bit rough and angular.
    • Finish
      83 83
The finish is medium-long and quite sharp at the beginning, before the sweetness returns on the palate and finally ends in a peppery - smoky finish with a slightly tingling mint.
