The sherry brings delicate dark fruitiness and spice but does not overwhelm the classic Hazelburn character. Compared to the 2019 14-year-old release, this is just a touch less sherry forward but perhaps more true to the Campbeltown characteristics. Value (£55) : 8/10
    • Nose
A dunnage rich, dry sherry upfront. Some wood tannins interwoven with strawberries, cranberries, sour grapes, cherries and red apples. Then some leather and dried tobacco leaves. It's got that vegetal dunnage compost-like note. It carries with it a touch of salinity and a mineral note of wet rocks that I get in so many Campbeltown whiskies. The some hazelnuts appear, almonds as well. It then becomes sweeter with notes of caramel and some brown sugar. Not thick, syrupy sweetness but just a touch. Then the pepper heat comes around along with baking spices of cinnamon, cloves and some ginger biscuits. A cooling mint note. I can almost convince myself there is the slightest hint of smoke in this one.
    • Taste
Sweet and sour intially on the palate. As expected more of those dried fruits appear along with some orange peels but not as much as on the nose. Still sweet with caramel and Demerara sugar. A touch spicier on the palate, more chilli than black pepper. Then loads of tobacco and dark, bittersweet chocolate. The influence of the oak is present with some drying tannins again. Some savoury spices as well, thyme and some rosemary.
    • Finish
The finish is medium to long in length. It again complements the nose and palate as it is drying and spicy with red fruits and brown sugar scattered around. I get more bitter coffee this time. Very pleasant indeed.

Typical sherried whisky which tastes much younger than it really is. And triple distillation doesn't make it better, of course. Good whisky overall and would be a nice everyday dram if it wasn't so damn overpriced.

A weak 83 at the beginning, but it blossoms into an 88/100 in the glass. For the price it is currently available, it is overpriced for a long time. 120 euros upwards on the secondary market, sensitively too much.
    • Nose
Unsurprisingly sherry dominates. A little Campbeltown funk comes through, which is either due to the in-house malting or the intentional not washing out of the casks, as this is supposed to be unpeated. Syrup sweet without water, caramel, Amarena cherries, dates, pleasantly tart, dry notes of sherry. Any idea of salt? So weak it could be imagination. orange syrup.
With water, a certain freshness comes into the nose, the syrupy character disappears. Still pleasantly sweet on the nose, alternating with the described tart notes and now something like gentle lemon balm is added, it becomes pleasantly floral and fruity-herbal. A touch of tobacco.
    • Taste
without water: dirty, sweet, unexpectedly dry in development. Sherry expresses itself tart, orange peel.
Much better with water. There's cinnamon, prunes, candied oranges. However, considering that Oloroso is known for being sweet, this one is very dry and tart. It gets better with every sip. Sweetness at the front of the tongue is contrasted with tart impressions at the back and on the edge of the mouth. The sweetness becomes more present with every sip. strawberry jam. orange zest.
    • Finish
Spicy lingers on the back of the tongue, yes, oranges again, dried raisins. Yes, red berries even make an appearance. Hazelnuts mark the last breath of the rather dry and long finish.

Sweet, toffee, brown sugar, ground white pepper, waxy palate, complex and long lasting. Perfect abv.

  7. Lakerfield scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

The parallels are very much there with the 2004 14yo version, only thing that is different is the impression that the funk and distillery character is a little more present in this bottling. It feels more 'raw' and thus less balanced than it's 2004 sibling. Again, the quality of used sherry casks is top notch. It's hard to find nowadays. Quality release again and I can't wait to try the 2006 15yo.

    NOSE
Sticky dark fruit, leather, pepper, hazelnuts, citrus peel, copper, vanilla cake, waxy and malty with a touch of cocoa and spice.

Heavy, deep and dark, this is a bold and heavy delivery

    PALATE
SHERRY! Copper, leather, sticky dark fruit, cocoa, black tea, vanilla cake, malt, baking spice and a bit of nuts and smoke.

Lightly smoky but heavily sweet and rich, this is heavenly.

    FINISH
Long -> Sherry, smoke, malt, and cocoa fade to citrus smoke and spice.

Oh yes! A big sherried one. Lots of fruits like raisins, figs, dates and prunes. But also acai berries and raspberry syrup. Even a hint of applepies. Now some sweet notes like caramel, toffees and chocolate. At the end notes of cinnamon and a little note of leather.
    • Taste
      91 91
Almost the same fruity notes like the nose. Raisins, figs, raspberries, purple cherries and baked apples. A clear note of cola sweets. A note of sherry, followed by a note of brown sugar. Also notes of caramel and chocolate. At the end some "new" notes like new oak, new fresh leather and some soil. I love it!

      90 90
Medium-long. With notes like raisins, cola sweets and old sherry. Also some cinnamon and a little note of oak.

When I first opened this one, I was really disappointed and thought it was another bland, young Hazelburn and I rated it 84.
However, as times passed and it got some air, it really took off and really, it was a real pleasure to drink.

Neat and with water, a wonderful expression, upgraded score to 88.
It was open for more than 1 year, mostly standing at the shoulders.

Mental Image: Hard Candies and that Old Leather Chair
    • Nose
Fruit, nuts, and spice. Dried fruits, sultanas, and a hint of roasted nuts led into cinnamon apple and pear hard candies. Undercurrents of minerals, wet mossy rocks, dogwood buds, and mild sherry-leather funk.
    • Taste
Medium to light body with fruit, spice, and leather. Crisp lemon-lime citrus soda infused with ripe berries, peaches, plums, and an assortment of stone fruits. Sherry funk came through on the mid-palate with overripe apricots and honey. The end was all leather and heady oloroso notes of milk chocolate and coffee candies.
    • Finish
Lingering tannic astringency with dried fruit and leather.

I've had Hazelburn 13 Limited before, but I'm a little skeptical? It was the taste that made it. The smell and taste are weak.

This time, I tasted the 13-year-old Oloroso as an exchange and made a comparison.

However, I think it will be different from the full-bottle tasting because the trader said that it has been open for a long time and the taste has lost a bit, but it is still at a good level.

Nose: Grass or herbs come to mind. Oloroso, why herbs and grass? I can say that, but I'm not surprised because I've already experienced it in Navi Bottle. Other scents are hard to catch.

Palette: Medium-bodied, sweet oligosaccharide, and moderate umami. When you hold it in your mouth, the fragrance rises, which is great for filling your mouth. I definitely said it was great. I like it very much. It leaves a very slight bitter and spicy aftertaste.

    Finish: Long finish with nose

Overall Review: I also ordered a bottle, and I'm so glad I bought it. I have to go get Webe 91 points

This started a little disappointing but is improving much better after a few months and a half empty bottle . The previous 14 hazelburn started great and got worse into the bottle.

But well into this 13 now- The sulphur notes are integrating better into the bottle , can taste the distillate better, herby musty flinty goodness. Realllllly good stuff

He really deserved the 88 points.
The bottle has now been open for almost a year and many dear people have taken part in various tastings.
For me he can compete with the 15 Springbanks.
The sherry moment is evident but not overdone, the Campbelltown character is present but rather reserved. Once again a great bottling from Mitchell.
This micro-region (Campbelltown with 3 distilleries) is almost the most interesting for me at the moment anyway, probably because I almost ignored it for a long time. It seems to me that the Mitchell house in particular is increasingly releasing good bottlings, or at least on the same level.
    I am delighted.
    • Nose
The triple distilled from the Springbank Distillery.
Milder than the Springbank maybe. Despite the unpeated barley malt, he somehow caught a glimpse of the smoke.
There is a nice cherry sweetness and some leatheriness as well as light hints of wood.
Beautifully complex, you can discover a lot. Thanks to the increased alcohol strength, it is also nice and strong.
    • Taste
      Spot on: here come Hazelburn.
      Confident yet charming.
An interplay of fruity sweetness, light smoke and some dryness.
      Multifaceted and interesting.
      Always très gentile.
      No burning!
    • Finish
It oscillates between sweetness and dryness and ends in the direction of cherry sweetness.
Medium long with a tendency to a long finish.
Beautiful, pleasant, balanced and still a little demanding.
I find him very individual and good.
But I don't think I will buy the Hazelburn without a sherry cask aging. This cask aging is simply a great match for the malt, and I'm also - admittedly - a fan of sherry cask aging.

Even with this Hazelburn, the triple distillation hasn't meant that you can't taste its origin. Class sherry aromas combined with mineral notes. In view of the quality that Springbank has delivered with the Hazelburn over the last few years, Hazelburn shouldn't be called a wallflower anymore.
    • Nose
      91 91
There's no denying it: a crystal-clear sherry, here: Oloroso nose. However, there is still a lot more to it, namely an absolutely typical Springbank character, which is also evident in this Hazelburn with mineral and salty notes. Raisins, pieces of dried apricot, aged leather, flavored pipe tobacco. Cellar mold, damp wood: fresh and rough at the same time, you have to get it right first.
    • Taste
      89 89
Lies softly and supple on the tongue, has blackberries, blackcurrants and grapes in the program. A hint of menthol in harmony with saltwater-wetted pebbles. Old oak floorboards, grated nutmeg, pepper, cracked leather. Figs and dates dried over time, plus nougat, marzipan and milk coffee.
    • Finish
      89 89
Medium length, dry, sherry accentuated. In the end, it delivers everything you would expect from a whisky matured in Oloroso casks, not without letting the "dirtiness" typical of Springbank shine through.

    (TASTED BLIND)
NOSE: Sherried, some dried fruits and old wood. A bit tight w/o water. With a few drops of water it reveals more typical sherried notes of dried fruits, light (and pleasant) rubber / sulphur and berganot flavoured tea. (87p).
TASTE: Concentrated, not easy to dechiper w/o water. With a few drops of water: The arrival is fairly dry, sherried with wood and some dried brown fruits. On the mid palate it is still difiicult to single out and name single components; over brewed black tea, some wood tannins, a little mild malty sweetness. But it tastes quite nice. (86p).
FINISH: Mild pepper on top of some sherried notes. (86p).

On the first nose it is fat, fruity, heavy, thick, almost syrupy. We have red fruits, plums, muscat grapes, blueberries, but also dried fruits, bananas, cashews and apricots. Nuts that have just been opened. Hot wood. On the palate, always so warm, figs, spices, sweet almonds. Nutmeg, cinnamon, saffron, and even a little curry. Strong and long finish, which brings everything we needed, with ginger. Varnished wood, some plants. Laurel.

Inferior Oloroso sherry barrels, smoke powder, gunpowder, red apples, black chocolates, fortunately, Kanzhen's fresh sea aloe vera, grease, motor oil, orange juice, and orange peel have brought back some expectations. Slightly spicy with fresh vegetables and weak alcohol stimulation. After a long time, the sulphur smell disappears, and the flavor tends to be creamy, which is a lot of pleasant nose. 85
    • Taste
      81 81
Oops, smoky, the sweetness is biased towards dried apples, the alcohol irritation is moderate, the bitter 75% of chewing + black chocolate, it is closed with small hemp, mint, and bitter bottom. The wine is weak and stimulating, the middle section is empty, and the flavor is simple and complex. p83b79
    • Finish
      78 78
Mint, wood, chocolate, peach pit, aloe vera are more uncomfortable. 78

Conclusion - A very well balanced Campbeltown dram, but this hazelburn lacks the complexity of some springbanks that we’ve tried. It’s a very good whisky, well made, but not super exciting.

I like it. Despite the sherry barrel, there is still enough distillery character in it. The malt is certainly not boring.
    • Nose
Dried cranberries. Aronia honey. Slightly red, floury apple. Roasted nuts with a little salt. Leather. Some herbs and umami too. Some Campbeltown Muff, but also a breath of fresh air.
    • Taste
Lots of sweetness at the beginning. Rock sugar. Caramel. But then the wood comes through and brings a decent, but never unpleasant flavor. Something is tingling. Tobacco. The Campbeltown character comes through stronger. Also a little blood orange.
    • Finish
A touch of cassis vinegar. Some salt and dried meat. Oak seasoning. Black tea with milk.

    (Tasted blind)
    APPEARANCE: Medium deep Cognac colour
NOSE: Lots of dried fruits, predominantly red ones, vanilla, creaminess, custard. Lovely nose. (90p)
With a bit of water it does open up; now I also get dried mango, candied orange zest and a lot of lemon as well as some orchard fruits hidden in the background. (90-91p)
TASTE: The arrival is viscous, soft, rounded, almost sweet. On the mid palate old oak, dried fruits, very concentrated. I think this needs water to open up and unfold properly. (89p)
A bit of water opens it up in the mouth as well; oak and tannins (drier now) but also zesty and orangey/citrusy fruitiness and mouth watering freshness/acidity. (90-91p)
FINISH: Again concentrated, almost sweet, old sweet oak and dried fruits. (89p)
With water the freshness/acidity carries on into the exit all the way to the end of the long aftertaste. What a citrusy “fruit bomb”! (90p)
OVERALL: I think this whisky has a considerable age (over 20 YO?) and has been aged predominantly in sherry casks. But there may be a bit of bourbon maturation here too. (Total 89p)
With water it clearly opens up and to my mind it improves, although the tannins become more noticeable and drier. Total score 90 (91) points.

Very fresh, sweet-salty nose. It goes well with whisky aging. The taste is sweet, turning into light bitterness. Delicious spicy alcohol. P.S. - Sober attempt # 2. With the addition of water, and a lot by about 10-20%, the nose becomes very balanced but rustic - woody sherry, which speaks of a good barrel. For people who do not like high alcohol, this is the right decision. Whisky is becoming much more drinkable.

really interesting malt. Was my first Hazelburn and I like it a lot. But he took time to open up. If you give it to him, you won't be disappointed. Delicious.
    • Nose
very changeable aromas, there is musty wood, leather, then citrus fruits, then it changes to coffee and dried fruits, then for a brief moment there is an aroma that I would describe as baby vomit. But that only stays for a very short time and then he opens and a lot of figs and apricots come to the fore. At the end I have fresh spices and a slight maritime touch
    • Taste
Creamy start, again leather and old wood in a rather musty direction, a bit bitter on the tongue, then there are dried fruits, mainly raisins and figs, then apricots and peaches. Nuts and a little espresso at the end of the process are easy to report
    • Finish
nice finish with spicy wood notes, leather, wonderful mouthfeel. The spicy wood notes are wonderfully combined with the sherry aromas and a good portion of coffee and really stimulate the flow of saliva. You can eat away at the finish for a long time

if someone says that tripple distilled spirits are boring should try hazelburn, and ecpecially this one. when compared to a auchentoshan, this is just miles away.

i would have never believed that this is unpeated. maybe it is just the springbank style which makes me think that there is some peat in there.

i must say that i fell in love with this dram when trying it the first time. now the bottle is almost empty and i liked it more when i first opened it, but still love it and have another bottle as backup :)

An unmistakable Hazelburn in the nose and mouth. The typical combination of citrus / ester, light sulfur, raisins, strawberries, herbs and nuts. Here in my opinion a little more pleasantly balanced and less sulphurous than in the 2003 version. Somewhat floral on the nose and therefore sufficiently complex. Sweet and sour in the mouth with nice Oloroso flavor. Medium-long and dry finish.

    Conclusion:
A wonderful, complex malt with a great sherry barrel that does not cover up the basic character and is in perfect harmony. Overall very fruity and with a typical sherry influence. Great malt that you should definitely stock up on.

Although the Oloroso casks really did their work (how could they not), the character of Hazelburn is still there as well, albeit it mostly in the nose and somewhat less on the palate. It’s definitely not an easy sipper, one that needs time to develop. But with a little bit of air and patience, the lingering heat from the pepper will settle a bit and it will reward you with new flavours with every sip.
    • Nose
Dried fruits, such as raisins and figs. A hint of plums. Oranges. It needs some time to really open up and then you get a bit of that Hazelburn character shining through. That oily dirtiness and that distinctive farmyard smell. Also a pinch of honey. A touch of leather. Cranberries too.
    • Taste
Plums. A hint of leather, plenty of tobacco. Some lovely bitter dark chocolate. Orange peels and cranberries, giving it a sour edge at some points. That same oily dirtiness as in the nose, but more in the background. There’s a bit of oak. A kick from spices, with a lingering heat from jalapeno peppers and cloves, but also thyme.
    • Finish
Mid-long to long and somewhat dry. Cranberries and there’s a balsamic note too. A hint of oak, tobacco leaves and the same spices as on the palate.

For the freshly opened bottle is everything
    ever great.
I'm looking forward to the development
    in the opened bottle.

Very reserved at first, a touch
Almond, a hint of ocean air,
      delicate bitter grapefruit, after a
      sometimes sour bright ones come
      fruits, then the fruits
      darker and sweeter.
Very light coconut, some apple, something
Butter and then comes the salt.
      Beautiful maritime influenced sherry nose.
The longer it is warmed up, the better
      will she.
Wow. Now even a cigar box.

      Perfect drinking strength, alcohol good
      integrated, slightly peppery, sweet,
      delicately bitter, red fruits.
    • Finish
      88 88
      Bitter - sweet, slightly astringent
and the salt comes back again.
Delicate woody notes linger the longest.
