The sherry brings delicate dark fruitiness and spice but does not overwhelm the classic Hazelburn character. Compared to the 2019 14-year-old release, this is just a touch less sherry forward but perhaps more true to the Campbeltown characteristics. Value (£55) : 8/10
    • Nose
A dunnage rich, dry sherry upfront. Some wood tannins interwoven with strawberries, cranberries, sour grapes, cherries and red apples. Then some leather and dried tobacco leaves. It's got that vegetal dunnage compost-like note. It carries with it a touch of salinity and a mineral note of wet rocks that I get in so many Campbeltown whiskies. The some hazelnuts appear, almonds as well. It then becomes sweeter with notes of caramel and some brown sugar. Not thick, syrupy sweetness but just a touch. Then the pepper heat comes around along with baking spices of cinnamon, cloves and some ginger biscuits. A cooling mint note. I can almost convince myself there is the slightest hint of smoke in this one.
    • Taste
Sweet and sour intially on the palate. As expected more of those dried fruits appear along with some orange peels but not as much as on the nose. Still sweet with caramel and Demerara sugar. A touch spicier on the palate, more chilli than black pepper. Then loads of tobacco and dark, bittersweet chocolate. The influence of the oak is present with some drying tannins again. Some savoury spices as well, thyme and some rosemary.
    • Finish
The finish is medium to long in length. It again complements the nose and palate as it is drying and spicy with red fruits and brown sugar scattered around. I get more bitter coffee this time. Very pleasant indeed.
