I think this this has lost a bit of power but it has been in the bottle 48 years plus the 35 years in a barrel.
The nose is a little shy and the palate in parts a little weak but there is more peat than I was expecting and some great sweet notes than more than make up for this.
This is an elegant sophisticated whisky that you need to be gentle with and take your time, some may find it a little tame but it has much to reward you.
89 points + 1 points for the palma violet sweetness.

Slightly dusty on first nosing with hints of honey, lemon & perhaps mango but they are not expressive so this one has a shy nose.
There is also a raw mushroom note which is fine but unusual mixed with a little almond.
A little orange marmalade emerges and the faintest wisps of menthol.
It does seem to develop in intensity after 5 minutes or so but , this is an elegant shy nose.
After another 5 mins a little ginger and white pepper.

Surprising, a blast of peat at first then a fruit salad combo with candied sugar, I was not expecting the peat, the nose gave no hint of this.
Now the pepper that is on the nose arrives with other mixed spice and mixes with the peat and the the fruit is there, hints of pineapple , mango , apple but stewed and sugared but its brown sugar.
    • Finish
      90 90
Renaining sweet, the peat also last until the end with a lovely palma violet note on the tail which is a real bonus.
Right at the end I can detect some oak but the sweetness on the tail more than compensates this.
