Cooley Distillery revived the historic brand of Tyrconnell in 1988, so let's give this classic Irish Single Malt a try! Simple presentation, no age statement - but at least it's affordable. The nose is clean and a bit anemic with green apple, citrus fruits and a touch of aniseed. Not as 'green' as I expected. On the palate, you get fresh and fruity notes, porridge and sweet hints of melon. Oddly enough, I detected distant bonfire smoke. Without any obvious cask influence, the finish is malty, sugary and slightly dry. An easy, understated and rather uneventful whiskey.

    • Nose
Very easy. Some pear. Green waste. A touch of banana.
    • Taste
Mild. Grass and grain with a subtle sweetness. Wet cardboard. In short, a bit bland.

I got this bottle in a set.
I wouldn't buy it extra. No time for that.
    • Nose
Definitely mild. Strongly fruity, mixed with orange and lemons.
Slight note of honey and caramel note (strong).
    • Taste
Nut aroma at the front, with strong oak and therefore massive in the mouth but one-sided or one-dimensional
Towards the chocolate with a few drops of water.
    • Finish
Relatively simple story with few spices and a relatively flat finish. Clearly too short

  4. Gloin scored this whisky 70 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Mandarins, sweet fruits, slightly putrid and artificial, woodruff, effervescent, caramel, mint
    • Taste
light, dry, slightly bitter, light sweetness, green apple, again somewhat artificial
    • Finish
slightly bitter, short to medium long

Lime to start with. Followed by some nice orchard fruit. A sweet tone of vanilla. Somewhere in the background a light creamy touch. Grains and green herbs end the nose.
    • Taste
      76 76
A big and nice, malty first touch on the tongue. Complemented by some oak. There is some honey and in the background licht touches of creamy vanilla.
    • Finish
      75 75
Short and dry with oakied vanilla.

Ok, nothing bad to say, nothing to cheer for. Good avec with afternoon coffee or tea break. Goes well with coffee and sweet pies too.

    - still very young average Irishman
    - for about 25 € you don't make a mistake, but it is also not a real purchase recommendation
    • Nose
      fruity, sweet, grapes, white wine
    • Taste
Initially rather mild, then strong alcoholic development, distinct youth, "a bit bubbly", sweetish, light malt
    • Finish
      short and dry finish;
      medium-long alcoholic aftertaste

  8. Ro_Loe_10 scored this whisky 77 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Green apples, citrus, vanilla, green and fresh fruits, honey, malt
    • Taste
Similar to nose, citrus and fruity
    • Finish
      Rather short, spicy, apples
