Cooley Distillery revived the historic brand of Tyrconnell in 1988, so let's give this classic Irish Single Malt a try! Simple presentation, no age statement - but at least it's affordable. The nose is clean and a bit anemic with green apple, citrus fruits and a touch of aniseed. Not as 'green' as I expected. On the palate, you get fresh and fruity notes, porridge and sweet hints of melon. Oddly enough, I detected distant bonfire smoke. Without any obvious cask influence, the finish is malty, sugary and slightly dry. An easy, understated and rather uneventful dram.

I got this bottle in a set.
I would not buy extra. No time for that.
    • Nose
      79 79
Clearly mild. Strong fruity, mixed with orange lemons.
Slight note of honey-caramel note (strong).
    • Taste
      76 76
Nußaroma front away, with strong oak and thus powerful in the mouth but one-sided, or even one-dimensional
Towards chocolate with a few drops of water.
    • Finish
      74 74
Relatively simple story with few spices and relatively flat finish. Clearly too short

  5. Totoro scored this whisky 77 points Expert Senior

This would do as an apéritif on a summer evening if nothing else is around, but I would not buy a bottle. Too young and "tropical" for my taste.
    • Nose
Slightly boozy / alcoholic, behind that there's dusty grains and citrus fruits, perhaps also some pineapple. Vanilla, custard, cream. No wood influence that I can detect. Noses young (fresh and somewhat sharp, some rough edges), but not altogether unpleasant.
    • Taste
Arrives watery and weak, then there's citrus fruitiness and, at long last, some faint spice from the wood. Slightly sharp / metallic throughout. A young one indeed. Not my cup of tea No comparison with other, more mature NAS Irish like Green Spot or even Jameson's Black Barrel.
    • Finish
The fruit becomes more tropical / exotic, with pineapple to the fore. Sweet and sour with slight spiciness to the edges of the tongue. Medium, respectable length for an entry-level, NAS Irish at 40%. Not mad at that at all.
