    Review number 900.

This one is a most excellent old Caol Ila that's like eating kippers that were tarred for some reason, next to a vase of flowers and a bag of big grain sea salt.

After most of the bottle is gone I feel like it shows its best side with a lot of water.
    • Nose
Tar and kippers, with soft old oak notes, sea salt, faint sal-ammoniac, and some faintly flowery note. Water brings dry old oak, salted honey, cigar leaves, and an oily barley note. Some fatty soot, and then this chemical note that makes it just a little bit off-putting but fascinating.
    • Taste
It's a tar bomb. Heavy tar candy notes with a bit of leather, and a big helping of salty peat. Faint grassy/flower petal notes in the back, but tar and clean oak are the main components. Lovely! It's not quite as coal-y as Caol Ila can sometimes be, but peat there is a plenty to be sure.
    • Finish
Cigars, ash, tar, sea salt. Yep, lots of cigar ash in the finish. With water it becomes quite drying and oaky, but not in a bad way at all. Old chalk, sal-ammoniac, and again that waxy flower petal thing.
