Whisky Reviews for Glengoyne 25-year-old

The PLV of this bottle is clearly outstanding. Such a well-made 25 for this money (245EUR) should force other distilleries to THINK. Sure, that's not cheap, but whoever tested it ... immediately feels (tastes) that I did everything right.
It's a great feeling and that's why I have two of them.
    • Nose
After the tasting you know for sure that the nose is the best part. There it is this sherry that has always been known from good bottles. There are matches coming through that simulate the smoke. I like it a lot. This also simulates a fine tobacco scent at the same time. After a short time it starts with apricots, raisins, caramel and orange plus peel. Now the apple. It slowly becomes more mature, juicy and sweeter. That goes up to baked apple. No alcohol, no annoying notes or smells.
Arrived in whisky heaven. Respect Glengoyne.
    • Taste
You know immediately. Here a down-to-earth well-made 25er appears! So powerful and incredibly thick on the tongue. Typical raisins on dark chocolate with the finest marzipan and always juicy ripe berries behind. Now the wort comes through clearly from the barrels. An exotic spice program with cedar wood, cinnamon, ginger, etc.! "mercado de especias"
Do you have to swallow it? ....do not want :-)
    • Finish
As expected, long and recurring. Here, too, a "delicate" but pleasant bitterness is clearly Cafe-Bar Espresso. That's the way it has to be. Typical orange dark chocolate with all kinds of dried fruits. Stay ... come back, stay ...... a dream!

It’s a bottle that many sherry lovers have on their wishlist, with a fairly high 90+ rating on Whiskybase (hence often temporarily unavailable in shops).

https://www.whiskynotes.be/2018/glengoyne/glengoyne-25-years/This is a very rich, fairly dark sherried dram, a style that used to be the trademark of The Macallan. Rather excellent, this deserves its fame.

    WhiskyNotes gave it a 91/100

The level is very rich, the smell is strong, and the tail tone can be better. How to say, even after the price increase, I still want to go to the bar occasionally for a drink.
    • Nose
Thick cinnamon, freshly maintained leather goods, jam made of blackberries, black cherries, plums, grated barley bread and aromatic leaves, slight earthiness.
    • Taste
The same smell (removing the bread and the leaves), the middle part has a slight bitter bottom and sourness (the wine is full and oily, so the acidity is not obvious), and the black chocolate and ginger sugar, mantening, licorice.
    • Finish
Medium to long, but the intensity drops quickly, cinnamon, oak, tobacco.

This liquid is old oak in colour, has thick slow legs and has been resting in my Glencairn glass for 30 minutes before nosing.

    Nose
Strong oak (without any bitterness) and even stronger spice, Christmas cake, thick molasse, honeycomb and stewed stone fruits. The smell you get when you shove a whole box of raisins in your mouth, that but richer. Bananas and vanilla pudding, pipe tobacco and worn leather. Bottling this at 48% instead of their usual 43% means more aromas get to your nose, this is stunning! 24/25

    Palate
Again on arrival, the oak and spice come first and give a lot of character to the malt, the mouth coating arrival develops into plums and a cacao powder like bitterness. Expresso beans and leather. I’m surprised this isn’t sweeter and even though I like it, I’m a little sad that what the nose showcased didn’t all show up to the party. I’m getting a lot of nuts now and some butterscotch. 21/25

    Finish
The dram shines here, it’s not long, it’s endless. Again I’m thankful for the higher abv that seems to put a greater emphasis on the flavours. Caramel, coffee and fruits and upon swallowing there’s a fun effervescent feeling. The caramel and fruit are on top of the tongue, there’s a drying sensation on the sides. 23/25

    Value and presentation
Starting with presentation, I’d take a point off for not mentioning there’s no chillfiltration but I won’t. A bit of digging online confirms it’s not chillfiltered and I’m just super grateful for the higher abv of 48% here that really levelled up this whisky to one of the best I’ve had. Also the box, bottle and cork are so luxurious and well made, it rivals Bunnahabhain’s presentation of their 25 year old. The value does lose a point for being 400$ CAD, yes it does review well against other 400$ malts and other 25 year old whiskies but it’s still 400$, almost 4 times the cost of one Glengoyne 18. 24/25

Macallan should be embarrassed what they peddle these days as their 25 year old and its price tag.
    • Nose
      93 93
Smoke (not peat) and gunpowder, dried figs and raisins, some chocolate, oranges, rich buttery toffee, fruit cake, notes of ginger and mint. Rich, complex, classic sherry nose!
    • Taste
      91 91
More and darker chocolate than the nose, then turns herbal, followed by quite a bit of caramel espresso, some oranges and orange peel. Berry jammy notes and ginger come and go, and a tad spicy.
    • Finish
      91 91
Long, spicy dark chocolate and orange peel.
