Whisky Reviews for Big Peat DL

This Blended Malt is a combination of four Islay whiskies, although I doubt that it contains more than a few drops of Port Ellen. Hence, the presentation of Big Peat is quite misleading. Being non-chill filtered and bottled at 46% ABV, the malt comes without an age statement. Typical Islay peat smoke, coal tar and TCP dominate the nose, followed by underlying Caol Ila sweetness. It tastes young and bland, as the cask influence is lacking almost entirely. The finish is peaty sweet, rather dry and long. A decent whisky that's way too expensive for what it offers.

Big Peat is in my opinion the best mixed malt there is!
The nose and taste are too good to worry about the finish.
I do not recommend added water, it ruins the taste.

Smoke, peat and ash. Over time, the aroma of bacon develops in the glass.
    • Taste
      91 91
Slightly oily consistency. It is a little salty, and at the end it develops aromas of pepper and tobacco.
    • Finish
      90 90
The only negative point is that it slips too fast in the throat. Good way to drink it more often.

    Batch 60 (2014)

Revisit an old batch before trying the current. #2/2

N- Lovely sweet malt follow by pungent fishy nose, eucalyptus and thick coat of sea salts. Cardboard-y, ashy with green tinge, get more herb-y then to candy, quintessential classic salty Islay peat lingers, breezy, lightness of ginger and lemon mix, full yet delicate, well evolved cured ham, salted honey. (91/22)

P- Well integration of island peat with salts, saline, herb-y, smokes, pounded peppercorn, balanced with lemon lime. (89/22)

F- Medium-long, spicy mouth wash, exotic young banana, fresh and zesty, not with much refine depth on the finish but well interpretation on the isle characters and ultra balanced that let all elements shines in this blends. (88/22)

Body/Balance- 93/23 Bold and full, superbly packed blended malt with amicable lightness, masterfully compose.

Weighted Rate- 89pt + 1 for the good value.

It does not quite meet my taste. Maybe I've been too much on sherry- / Weinfassagagerte whiskeys lately. The bottom line is that he feels a bit too young.
    • Nose
Ostensibly, of course, first a lot of smoke, first a lot of sweetness, which then gives a herbal note, mint and a little vanilla space. Much more does not give me the nose.
    • Taste
The smoke comes to me only when swallowing. Oiliness and spice, which is strongly linked to the smoke. The sweetness is stronger in the nose. The alcohol content could even be slightly higher for my taste.
    • Finish
Maximum medium-length finish, a little too tart, except smoke and spicy notes hardly remains over.

Nicely balanced with a reasonable complexity. Very good daily peated dram.
