next to high-strength/heavier/mustier/darker/more-savoury old malts, this shows some very modern vanilla & low-land-ish grassy notes. Looses quite a bit for me in that case. Beautiful by itself or as a starter but is a bit fickle on the nose...
    • Nose
First of: very musty, heavy, old-style malt par excellence, metallic (green copper), fruits (persimmon, mirabelles, gooseberry, and a cucumber...), fruit wax, grassy, some wet oak. (89)
A bit later: less metallic, more wood, grassy-ness coming through now much more, less sweet fruit, some fresh green garden fruit (apples & unripe gooseberries as well as some citrus fruits, lime maybe), rhubarb leaves, dry oak, some garden earth. Not unlike some recent IB Littlemills now. (88)
Later: very interesting, accumulates sweet/exotic fruit, vanilla & heavy musty notes over time when left alone, which after a sniff are gone immediately again and it's back to the green garden fruits & grassy/oaky notes. Extra points for the very entertaining character-shift (91)
Even later: a bit all too pleasant & ordinary/modern now, shame really. (86)
    • Taste
sweet, malty, slightly perfume-y/yasmin tea, fructose, vanilla, quite modern and clean in an unusual way, a herbal & beeswax note underneath nods towards the old times. Also, hints of coal smoke. (91)
    • Finish
more malt & vanilla, honey, fructose turning more fruitier towards the end with some apples & passionfruit, gingerbread, faint smoke, very nice length! (93)
