  1. Thermidor scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

    Tasted blind.

This Talisker has quite restrained levels of peat. I know Talisker at some point used to have less PPM than it does now, and these 1979 CA Taliskers all seem to be more mellow than for example the 20yo 1982 OB, but I have no idea whether this is because this 1979 distillate is globally less peaty, or just random variation due to how peating a batch of malt works.

All told, a good quality and personable dram but even with water it doesn't have the kind of a lasting aftertaste the best Taliskers do, hence a score starting with 8.
    • Nose
On the first nosing, a marine peaty whisky. Could be Bowmore, but where's the fruit? After a while this really tight dry worn oak note comes out, then fresh paint, rocks, and the ambience of a medical cabinet. Some gentle vanilla too. With water, sal-ammoniac, leaves of some unknown herb, varnish, old vanilla, and a bit of grass. More water gives me salmiak powder, peanuts, and a whiff of something soapy.
    • Taste
Medium peatiness that feels like something between 10-20 PPM. Some (nice) toothpaste, sweet citrus fruitiness that I didn't catch on the nose, some pure malts, and a worn cloth. With water the lemons become chalky. It's austere and distillate-driven, but perhaps it would have shined better in a vatting with another, peatier cask? Because regardless of the amount of water added, it does stay a bit shy and never blooms to the kind of perfection the best over 20yo OBs display.
    • Finish
Long, with a lot of licorice, but not much else.
