About North of Scotland

North of Scotland was a grain whisky brand produced at a now-defunct distillery in Cambus, in Scotland’s Lowlands. Established by George P. Christie in 1957 on the site of the former Forth Brewery (originally branded as Strathmore for its malt production), it swiftly shifted to focus exclusively on grain whisky. The distillery earned a reputation for innovation—installing patent stills sunk into the floor to meet height restrictions, embracing early computerised production, and crafting one of the more characterful grain whiskies of its era. Operations ceased in 1980 amid industry oversupply, and while the buildings were largely demolished, a rare official 50-year-old single grain bottling was released in 2017, making the brand a unique footnote in Lowland whisky history.
