There it is, a close reminder of the V&M 10 YO, a guilty pleasure of mine, as those notes from “experienced” drinkers dislike this style a lot.
As I am tasting this one along with the late 80s Italian bottling of Tobermory 12 (certainly distilled in the early 70s era), I did find a hint of connection between the two, but blame it on suggestion if you insist on your opinion.
    • Nose
      90 90
Used leather, cold smoke from an extinguished bonfire, Chinese ink, herbal jelly, fermented Puh-er, it’s already showing that dirty, dark, and ashy peat profile that I like a lot. Sharp acidity of cranberry but suppressed by the peat profile so it remained pleasing, along with glazing caramel sweetness. Burnt tire, flint and burnt matches. More leather after the first sip. Kippers, animal fur, ink, and grape concentrate in an emptied glass.
    • Taste
      90 90
Rather big-bodied and certainly bold, but dangerously quaffable despite the high ABV, The voluminous sweetness of the maple syrup swiftly changed into prominent lemony acidity, then unfolded with fresh fruitiness of strawberry, and a trace of shoe polish, ripe papaya, extinguished bonfire, and charred wood, Vit C tablet after long chewing.
    • Finish
      89 89
Undoubtedly long finish. Considerable tannic astringency, and drying, coupled with burnt-wood bitterness, charcoal, and tar. At the very end of finish, there came a trace of sandalwood, and a bit of soapiness. With this tasted, every breath would just be smoky...
