There it is, the Lagavulin Distillers Edition 2021! Let's see where the journey for one of my favorite whiskys is going. In terms of price, there was a noticeable increase in price.

Oops! Now I have spread the Distillers Edition on my sweater while swiveling the glass. Fortunately not everything.

The color is almost copper and golden brown. Really great to look at ...

... would be the whisky if it wasn't colored. Why does it have to be, Diageo?

First of all, the smoke rises in my nose, which at first seems comparatively phenolic for a Lagavulin. The other first impression is also more fresh and maritime.

Apparently the whisky needs a short breath, because after a few minutes a fruity overall picture with slightly warming smoke reveals itself. Ripe stone fruit, plum jam, cookie dough, fruit tobacco, mineral notes and sea air perfectly complement the smoke, which increases in volume over time.

The aroma seems a little less greasy to me than with the bottlings of the last few years - whereby during the "waiting time" the aroma moves further and further away from the fresh character towards a warmer and juicier character.

The balance between distillery character and barrel aging is remarkable.
    • Taste
      89 89
Significant smoke, nutmeg and other spices, peach, oranges, jam and mineral notes again, ripe berries, charcoal - the strong, spicy approach subsides over time and allows sweeter notes to emerge.

The smoke remains present for most of the time.
    • Finish
      87 87
The fruits become drier, oak wood spreads on the tongue together with espresso, some cocoa powder and fresh spices.

The smoke is no longer as intense as expected, but it is clear enough - and above all, it sticks to the palate for a long time.
