About James Buchanan & Co.

James Buchanan & Co. was founded in London in 1884 by Canadian-born businessman James Buchanan. The company established itself as a whisky blender and bottler, becoming known for accessible Scotch blends such as Buchanan’s and the long-standing Black & White. By the early 20th century, it had become one of the most prominent whisky houses in the UK, supplying both domestic and export markets. Eventually absorbed into the Distillers Company Ltd. and later into Diageo, James Buchanan & Co. continues as a brand identity within Diageo’s portfolio, with its legacy rooted in blending and bottling rather than distilling.
