Over Maltkanzlei:

I’m from Germany’s Rhineland region, and whisky has been part of my life since 1989.

It all started when a friend asked me to buy a malt whisky for my birthday party. At the time, I knew little about whisky, but I picked up a late-1980s bottle of Glenfarclas 105, 8 Years Old at Whisky-Stahlkopf in Hamburg. A few drams later, I was hooked. Several decades on, that fascination hasn’t faded one bit.

Over the years, work took me to many places and gave me plenty of opportunities to discover new whiskies, meet interesting people, and keep learning. Since the mid-1990s, I’ve been hosting private tastings and sharing drams with friends and fellow whisky lovers.

Early 2013, one of my sons jokingly named my newly renovated whisky room the “Maltkanzlei.” The name stuck, I used it for my blog on Facebook and Instagram (#maltkanzlei) and eventually it found its way onto this page.

My whisky tastes are fairly traditional. Springbank, Glenfarclas, GlenDronach, Bruichladdich, and many of Islay’s traditional distilleries rank among my favorites. I also have a soft spot for the old lost distilleries whose spirits can still be enjoyed today.

While Scotland remains my spiritual home when it comes to whisky, I’m always happy to explore what other countries have to offer, especially Ireland, the United States, and, with a touch of local pride, Germany. In 2014, I had the privilege of attending the original week-long Bruichladdich Academy, and in 2017, Springbank Whisky School.

For me, whisky is friendship in a bottle!

More than anything else, it’s the people who make this hobby special. Whisky brings together individuals from different countries, backgrounds, professions, generations, and walks of life. Good conversations, shared drams, and lasting friendships are every bit as important as what’s in the glass.

These days, I generally gravitate toward older malts, especially those that have naturally reached drinking strength through long maturation in cask. That said, age alone means very little. Great whisky can be found at any age. I do appreciate age statements, though, because transparency matters.

As for dislikes, I can happily live without added colouring and chill filtration. And despite giving them every chance, Tokaji cask finishes have never quite become friends of mine.
