I started my interest in single malts around 2003. I quickly discovered that I preferred smoky and cask strength whiskies. Especially Islay whiskies but in reality I enjoy all kinds. In fact I do not think I have ever tasted a whisky that i did not like.
My favorite distillery is Ardbeg but I think recently they have gone a bit too commercial and there seems to be many mediocre releases.
My all time favorite is Very Young Ardbeg and I remember when this could be bought for almost the same price as an Ardbeg Ten.
I really enjoy finding reasonably priced whiskies that taste great. That feeling of tasting a fantastic bottle which you paid reasonably money for is great.
Regarding prices then it is obvious that the prices have increased alot. So I started also buying as an investment around 2014. I do not think I am a very good investor because many of the bottles end up getting opened anyway as I generally believe that whiskies should be enjoyed instead of being held hostage in a cupboard. I am also not sure I want to sell any of my bottles as I like them too much.
I wish the prices would be more reasonable but I guess it will only continue to go in the wrong direction.
I enjoy also tasting whiskies in good company and discussing the experience. I would recommend this to everyone as it brings another dimension to this interest. I joined a private whisky club were we meet regularly and take turns to select and invite the others for tasting. This is a very nice way to combine friendship with interest. Whisky is also good for that.
