Vinmonopolet - the Norwegian state-run monopoly on alcohol. You find it all over the country, usually secured like banks but with bottles instead of ATMs. The ambiance is that of an average supermarket: clean, practical and not very cosy.

While the selection of whiskies in their stores is somewhat limited, you can order a decent range of official and independent bottlings through Vinmonopolet's web page. After 2-3 days, you can pick up your order at a store of your choice, or have it sent to you by mail (extra costs).

The prices... well. The Norwegian alcohol tax is approximately $25 per 70 cl bottle of spirit. Useless to speak of any 'value' here. The service is insufficient and often not very professional. The lack of knowledge in prices and market values has the advantage that from time to time, there are bottles being sold for far less than the average price margin in other European countries (for example Lagavulin DE for about 60,- €). Alas, this doesn't happen very often.

Bottom line: Buy your whisky somewhere else when traveling abroad!

Update 06/2018: After my last three online orders were ALL cancelled due to the tremendous incompetence of Vinmonopolet to keep track of their own stocks, plus the fact that it took more than a week to get a refund, I am scoring 'service' at 35 points, which is the worst score I have ever given. If you want to avoid frustration, buy all your bottles abroad when traveling. This monopoly can't be any worse!
