  1. glen efze scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Clynelish from the Adelphi Selection, 10 years old and with a rich copper hue after maturation in a first-fill PX hogshead. The whisky has a respectable 52.6% ABV, which is probably not cask strength. Or is it? 277 bottles were produced; that would make sense for a hogshead…

    • Nose
On the nose, the sherry immediately captivates with dark plum jam, cinnamon, and cardamom. There's sugar beet syrup, ripe cherries, marzipan with a hint of bitter almond. The alcohol is noticeable as a fresh note. Herbs are also perceptible, perhaps a touch of lovage, but above all tarragon with a rather sweet sauce base.
    • Taste
In the mouth, the whisky feels thick and sweet – initially, however, the alcohol dominates, starting off quite strongly. The aromas were more pronounced on the nose than on the palate; here, the alcohol remains strong for me, followed by spicy sherry notes, malt, dry cocoa, and spicy wood. The whisky needs a good splash of water, which softens the alcohol somewhat. Then the Swiss herbal sugar emerges, along with a hint of tarragon sauce.
    • Finish
The whisky finishes on the palate with a rather bitter and spicy note. There's a hint of wood, a spicy herbal note, while the fruit remains more in the background.

Even after several sips, I find the alcohol too prominent. It's more of a sherry maturation, present but not overly sweet; it's a sherry bomb. The oak is also noticeable. Perhaps I'd place it in the Highlands blind – but Clynelish? I have no idea if that would come to mind without prior knowledge. In my opinion, it's a whisky that needs experimenting with water; neat, I find it too inaccessible and too alcoholic. Even after another tasting a few days later: This is a sherry whisky without a clear Clynelish DNA, and ultimately, it comes across as somewhat young and alcoholic.
