Timeline

Documented roots of the family farm

The history of Hinrichsen's Farm dates back to the year 1630. The farm stands for centuries-long agricultural tradition without subsequently constructed legends.

1630

Return from New York to Föhr

In 1959, grandfather Robert returned from New York to Dunsum on Föhr and re-established the family’s focus on the historic farm.

1959

Start of distillery production

Since 2019, the distillery facilities have been in operation, enabling a full on-site production approach: Cultivation, malting, brewing, distillation, maturation and bottling take place on the farm in Dunsum — a consistent single-estate / single-farm approach.

2019

Sustainable Distillery of the Year – Rest of World

Hinrichsen’s Farm Distillery was awarded Sustainable Distillery of the Year (Rest of World) at the 2024 World Whiskies Awards. The award recognized the distillery's consistently implemented single-estate approach, which includes organic farming, artisanal malting, and a closed-loop system on its own farm.

2024

Sustainable Distillery of the Year (Global / Rest of World)

At the 2026 World Whiskies Awards, Hinrichsen’s Farm Distillery once again received the Sustainable Distillery of the Year award. This award from the international jury confirmed the distillery's pioneering role in ecological whisky production on a sustainable and global scale.

2026

Gold Wonter 2025 – World Whiskies Awards

Hinrichsen’s Farm Distillery’s Frisian Single Farm Whisky – Wonter 2025 was awarded Gold in the Taste category at the 2026 World Whiskies Awards. The award recognized the expressive balance of power, maturity, and terroir in this consistently single-estate winter whisky.

2026

Emigration to the United States

In 1860, great-great-grandfather Cornelius Hinrichsen left the island of Föhr for the United States (New York), marking a formative chapter in the family’s emigration story.

1860

Family trip to the USA — the farm distillery idea is born

In 2017, the family travelled to the Hudson Valley (USA) to visit relatives who still run a dairy farm there.

What caught their attention was a small, independent farm distillery nearby producing single malt “from germination of the barley to bottling” entirely on-site — “everything from one hand, all in one place.”

This became a defining moment: they realized whisky is, at its core, agriculture — and that a true “grain-to-glass” approach could be built on Föhr using the island’s own identity and resources.

2017

Public presentation of the first bottling on the farm

After three years of maturation, the first distillate can officially be called whisky. The first bottling was presented to a broader audience on 9 September on Hinrichsen’s Farm.

2022

New brewing system

The previous brewing system was replaced by a professional brewing system with a mash tun and two wooden washbacks. This significantly reduced brewing time and simultaneously increased output. The new separator also enables the future production of rye whisky.

2025

Best Single Estate Distillery (Global / Rest of World)

Also in 2026, Hinrichsen’s Farm Distillery was awarded Best Single Estate Distillery (Rest of World) at the World Whiskies Awards. The award recognized the completely on-farm production, from grain cultivation to distillation and maturation – a very rare form of true single-estate whisky production worldwide.
